मध्य प्रदेश की राजधानी भोपाल में 2 और 3 दिसंबर 1984 की दरम्यानी रात को यूनियन कार्बाइड कारखाने से जहरीली 'मिथाइल आइसोसाइनेट' गैस रिसने के कारण 3,000 से अधिक लोग मारे गए थे और 1.02 लाख से अधिक प्रभावित हुए थे. इस भोपाल गैस त्रासदी मामले में यूनियन कार्बाइड ने तब 470 मिलियन अमेरिकी डॉलर (1989 में निपटान के समय 715 करोड़ रुपये) का मुआवजा दिया दिया था. मुआवजे की राशि बढ़ाने के लिए केंद्र सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट में एक क्यूरेटिव पिटिशन दायर किया, जिस पर अदालत ने सरकार से रुख साफ करने को कहा है.
