Himanta Sarma Returns Charger To Flight Passenger, Gifts Him A Gamocha
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday expressed gratitude while he returned the mobile charger of a man he borrowed while travelling recently to Dubai from Delhi in an Emirates aircraft.
Taking to X, CM Sarma wrote, "Today, I returned the mobile charger I had borrowed from Deepak Kapoor, my fellow passenger on the Delhi-Dubai flight in his Noida Residence and offered his family an Assamese Gamocha as a token of gratitude. It brought me immense satisfaction."
"Deepak had given me the mobile charger without knowing anything about me. His selfless act touched me deeply, and I felt compelled to honour that rare kindness. I wanted to ensure that his spirit of helping a stranger lives on -- a small tribute to a truly generous soul," he added.
Today, I returned the charger I had borrowed from Sri Deepak Kapoor, my fellow passenger on the Delhi–Dubai flight in his Noida Residance and offered his family an Assamese Gamocha as a token of gratitude. It brought me immense satisfaction.
— Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) April 13, 2025
Deepak had given me the charger… https://t.co/VXvumAlJDd pic.twitter.com/j9zE9sqvwc
In the previous week, while boarding the flight of Dubai from Delhi, CM Sarma noted that he was travelling without a phone charger.
A young man sitting beside him noticed and, without hesitation, offered his international plug and charging cable.
It was a small but significant act of kindness, the kind that connects strangers in fleeting yet meaningful ways.
With a smile and a nod of appreciation, CM Sarma accepted the help and plugged in his device.
The journey continued smoothly, and as exhaustion set in, CM Sarma drifted off to sleep.
Hours later, the Chief Minister woke up to find that the plane had landed in Dubai, and the fellow passenger in his flight had exited the plane.
In the rush of disembarkation, amid the movement of passengers, baggage, and airport announcements, one crucial detail had slipped past him: he still had the charger and cable in his possession.
The young man had left without reclaiming them, unaware that his small gesture of kindness would lead to an unexpected twist in the journey.
In Amsterdam, CM Sarma found himself filled with regret.
"Today morning I travelled on an Emirates flight from Delhi to Dubai, where a kind young gentleman lent me his international plug and charging cable. Unfortunately, he disembarked in Dubai while I was asleep, and I couldn't return them. I've just now arrived in Amsterdam and feel deeply apologetic for not returning his belongings. If this message reaches him, please send me a direct message so I can arrange to return your charger and cable promptly. Thank you for your kindness, and I regret any inconvenience caused @emirates," the Chief Minister wrote on X.
CM Sarma also enlisted the help of the Assam Police, who immediately began working to identify the man.

Several Cops Injured During Anti-Waqf Protest Rally In Tripura
Several policemen sustained injuries during a clash between the security personnel and the agitators who held a protest rally against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act in northern Tripura's Kailashahar under Unakoti district on Saturday afternoon.
The protest, organized by the Kailashahar Joint Action Committee, began from Tilabazar and proceeded towards Kubjhar area as they did not get police permission and decided to organise it outside the municipal area.
However, upon reaching Kubjhar, the situation escalated allegedly after a shoe was thrown towards the rally, which then took an ugly turn and a clash with police personnel followed. Bricks, stones, and glass bottles were thrown at cops.
This left Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, Police Inspector Jatindra Das, and several other officers injured.
The situation turned chaotic, forcing the police to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Protesters then fled the scene.
Police forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and central paramilitary units, deployed in large numbers at the site included Kailashahar Police Station officer-in-charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury, Irani Police Station OC Arundaya Das, and DSP Utpalendu Debnath.
Following the violence, the injured security personnel were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R and Northern Range DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath visited the area to assess the situation.
While the DIG later confirmed that the situation was under control, but some argument was seen between SP Sudhambika R and opposition Congress leader Md Badruzzaman who led the protest.
While DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath assured that peace had been restored in the area, protest leader Md Badruzzaman claimed that many protesters were injured due to police action and blamed the authorities for provoking the violence.
The incident has triggered fear and unrest across the Kailashahar subdivision, with police maintaining heightened vigil to prevent further disturbances.
President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, as announced by the Law Ministry in a notification on the same day.
The Bill was recently passed by parliament after intense and lengthy debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The law seeks to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management, streamlining coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities and protecting stakeholders' rights.

Tracks Blocked As Violence Breaks Out In Parts Of Bengal Over Waqf Act
There was tension in at least two pockets of West Bengal on Friday afternoon following protests by members of a community against the Waqf Amendment Act.
Tension prevailed at Nimtita and Suti in minority-dominated Murshidabad district on Friday, following clashes between the protesters and the security personnel. At Nimtita railway station, protesters blocked railway tracks for hours and vandalised railway properties.
Railway Police Force personnel later had to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The protesters had also thrown stones at the security personnel, some of whom were injured.
Later, Border Security Force personnel were deployed in the area and, as per the latest available information, the situation is largely under control.
Clashes also broke out between protesters and the state police personnel at the Sajur Crossing area under Suti police station in Murshidabad district on Friday, as the protesters reportedly threw stones and crude bombs towards police personnel.
A number of police personnel and some pedestrians were also injured. The police then lathicharged the mob.
Additional police forces had been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control. However, tension prevailed in the area till the time of filing of this report.
Similar tension broke out at Amtala area in the South 24 Parganas district as people protesting against the Waqf Act attacked local police personnel there. The police retaliated, and traffic was impacted on National Highway 117 for quite some time.
The situation was similar at Champdani in Hooghly district of West Bengal.
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the state had been witnessing large-scale violence, anarchy and lawlessness in the name of protests by a certain group of radicals.
“These people, who have clearly stated that they are against the Constitution of India and would oppose the law of the land, have taken over the streets. Public and private properties are being vandalised at will. Public safety has been compromised as general people are at the mercy of these ruthless mobs of radicals,” he said.
The office of Governor CV Ananda Bose contacted the office of Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and conveyed a message from the Governor that the police should adopt prompt and strict measures to keep the situation under control.
Later, the Governor issued a video message claiming that he had been receiving disturbing reports about some people taking law and order into their hands in some parts of Bengal. He also informed that, on receipt of information about certain troubles likely to brew in certain parts of West Bengal, he had a confidential discussion with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“Even today, when some of the disturbances broke out, discussions were held with the government authorities. The Chief Secretary has assured that the government is taking very stern action against the miscreants and will not allow disturbances to escalate. The state is prepared. All action will be taken against miscreants. Nobody will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” the Governor added.

India's Domestic Demand Big Magnet Amid US Trade Tariffs: Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that the resilience of the economy and strength of domestic demand will continue to make India an engine of growth amid the rapidly evolving global trade landscape as a result of US tariffs.
In an interaction entitled the ‘Opportunities and challenges for India's quest to become a developed economy by 2047' at the High Commission of India in London, she asserted that the economy was well placed to capitalise on domestic efficiencies and competitiveness as it tackles global headwinds.
“The world has seen depressed growth for over several years; earlier, it was low interest for long and now it's going to be low growth for long, and that's not happy news for anybody,” said Ms Sitharaman, who is in London on her first UK visit in her current Union Cabinet term.
“India has maintained its fastest growing economy tag continuously now for five years and we still think that momentum may moderate a bit, but it will still be India who will keep that growth… as our growth gets calibrated because of the consumption which exists domestically. It is backed by demand for global-standard goods and that is why globalisation since the 1990s has given India many opportunities,” she said.
“The US is the leading trade partner for India. So, at a time when trade is going to be influenced by tariffs, measures which the US government is taking, we still will have to make sure that the strength that India has in domestic demand as a big magnet which can attract global supplies must be sustained and boosted,” she noted.
The minister said the strength of this demand would prove attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI) and international manufacturing to supply for the domestic market and also export from India.
“We think India, and a few emerging markets, are going to be the engines of growth. The global depressed growth, if it has to pick up, will have to be because of these engines,” she said.

Walk On Knees, Lick Coins: Firm's Punishment For Underperforming Employees
A private marketing firm here has been accused of subjecting its underperforming employees to degrading treatment, including making them walk on their knees like chained dogs and lick coins from the floor.
The state Labour department has ordered a probe into the alleged inhuman workplace harassment after the disturbing visuals were aired by local television channels.
As the issue came to the light, state Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered an inquiry into the undated incident and instructed the district labour officer to submit an immediate report on the incident.
The visuals purportedly showed a person using a leash to force a man to crawl on his knees on the floor, resembling a dog.
Later, some employees told a TV channel that those who fail to achieve targets were subjected to such punishments by the management of the firm.
According to police, the incident allegedly took place in connection with a private marketing firm functioning in Kaloor and the crime allegedly occurred at nearby Perumbavoor.
The police told reporters that they haven't received any complaint and the owner denied the allegations.
Quoting the owner of the firm, they said the alleged harassment might have taken place in a firm in Perumbavoor which used to market and sell the products of the establishment in Kaloor.
"No case has been registered so far and an investigation is underway," an officer said.
Labour Minister Sivankutty termed the visuals "shocking and disturbing" and said it cannot be accepted at any cost in a state like Kerala.
"I have ordered a probe into the incident and instructed the district Labour officer to submit a report in connection with the incident after carrying out a probe," he told the media.
Later in the day, the State Human Rights Commission registerd a case into the incident based on a complaint filed by High Court lawyer Kulathoor Jaisingh.
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Youth Commission also intervened and registerd a case on its own into the alleged harassment incident.
The panel directed the District Police Chief to submit a report in this regard.
In a statement, Commission Chairman M Shajar said legal action should be taken against such practices that are unacceptable in a civilised and democratic society.
"As a civilised society, we should collectively respond against such anti-social trends," he said.

Meitei, Kuki Teams Leave For Delhi To Attend Peace Talks On Saturday
Delegations of the Meitei and Kuki communities separately left for Delhi to attend peace talks scheduled on Saturday, sources said.
The meeting is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs' efforts to mediate between the two communities in the state where 250 people were killed and thousands were left homeless after violence began in May 2023.
The Meitei team comprises three members each from the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and the Federation of Civil Society Organisations, a functionary of the FOCS said.
On the other hand, representatives of the Zomi Council along with those from the Hmar Inpi and the Kuki Zo Council also left for Delhi to take part in the meeting, sources in the Kuki groups said.
The AMUCO delegation includes its president Nanda Luwang, along with senior advisers Ito Tongram and Dhanabir Laishram.
Another team from FOCS, which has been actively advocating for the interests of the Meitei community, has also confirmed its participation in the talks.
Two days ago, the Kuki leadership based in Manipur's Kangpokpi district set three pre-conditions including no inter-district movement between Meitei and Kukis in the areas where the other community is in majority.
It is not immediately known whether the conditions were met.
There have been many efforts from the central government to bring the warring communities to the negotiating table. The Centre imposed President's rule in the state on February 13 after N Biren Singh resigned as chief minister.

'Fabricated Video, Lookalike': Woman Techie's Note Before Suicide
A 28-year-old woman software engineer allegedly took her own life in Nagpur after leaving behind a purported suicide note, claiming she was the victim of a conspiracy involving a fake video and threats to her life, police said on Thursday.
The engineer, who worked for a company in Pune, had returned to her hometown Nagpur, where she lived with her father, brother, and sister-in-law, around 15 days ago.
On Tuesday morning, when only her father was at home located in Mankapur locality, she asked him to step out to buy breakfast and later hanged herself, according to the police.
After police was called to her residence, they recovered an identical suicide note written in English and Marathi, in which she accused two individuals named Ritesh and Pratim of being responsible for her death, they said.
She also alleged that her roommate had issued threats to kill her. Additionally, she mentioned that her mobile phone was stolen from the Indore airport on March 5. Despite her attempts to lodge a complaint, the police allegedly refused to register it, citing the lack of a mobile bill, they said.
In the note, the techie also claimed she was being framed through a fabricated video featuring a lookalike. She denied making any religious comments, suggesting certain individuals were trying to falsely implicate her, informed the police.
Her family members revealed she had travelled to Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) from Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) before returning home. Since then, they had observed a change in her behaviour. She appeared to be under immense mental stress, refused to eat food prepared by others, and preferred cooking her own meals or staying hungry, said the police, quoting her family members.
A case of accidental death has been registered and an investigation was underway, they added.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday along with four people for allegedly kidnapping her live-in partner following a fight, police said.
A call was received at the Kharavel Nagar police station on Tuesday night that one Somanath Swain, 28, was kidnapped, and his family was asked to pay Rs 10 lakh for his release, they said.
The call was made by Somanath's sister, Anjita Nayak, who told the police that his partner, Prapti Sharma, might have knowledge about it, they added.
Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh said the case was solved within six hours with the help of CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and five persons, including Prapti who hails from Jamshedpur, were arrested.

Gujarat Firecracker Factory Blast Death Count Rises To 21, 6 Injured
Twenty-one persons lost their lives while six others were injured on Tuesday after an explosion and blaze ripped through a godown where firecrackers were allegedly stored and manufactured illegally, leading to the structure collapse in Banaskantha district, officials said.
The explosion, which occurred at approximately 9:45 AM, flattened the godown in an industrial area near Deesa town, around 30 km from the Banaskantha district headquarters.
"All the deceased persons were originally from Harda and Dewas districts of Madhya Pradesh," said district collector Mihir Patel.
He said 21 people were killed and six injured.
"The identity of 19 persons has been established, while DNA samples are being taken to identify two others," he said.
The blast was so intense that it sent body parts of workers flying 200-300 metres away. The impact brought down the RCC slab of the structure. Even family members of workers staying on the same premises were crushed to death after blocks of slabs fell on them, the collector said.
Minister Rushikesh Patel told reporters that seven fire teams, eight ambulances, a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team and four bulldozers were rushed to the site for rescue operations.
Superintendent of Police Akshayraj Makwana said the casualties occurred after the slab of the godown collapsed following a blast.
He said forensic teams are trying to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
Makwana said the structure- Deepak Traders- was owned by father-son duo Deepak Mohnani and Khubchand Mohnani.
"Prima facie, they were stocking firecrackers illegally. Police have registered an FIR, and formed five teams for investigation. A special investigation team (SIT) headed by a Dy SP-level officer has also been formed," he said, adding that some persons have been rounded up for questioning.
Deesa Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Neha Panchal said the godown had initially obtained a licence for storing firecrackers but it was not renewed after it expired on December 31, 2024, due to lapses.
"They had applied for renewal of the license after it expired. After authorities found that the unit lacked proper facilities, the renewal process was put on hold," Panchal said.
Panchal stressed that the licence was only meant to store firecrackers.
"However, it seems they were prima facie illegally manufacturing firecrackers. Strong action will be taken for operating without permission," she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of family of the victims.
"Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the explosion at a firecracker factory in Banaskantha, Gujarat. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.
"The local administration is assisting those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000," the PMO posted on X.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also expressed grief and declared financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured persons.
"The incident of the death of workers due to fire and slab collapse in a firecracker godown in Deesa is heart-breaking. My heartfelt condolences are with the relatives of the deceased in this hour of grief," Patel tweeted.
Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav said the untimely death of workers hailing from his state in the incident was saddening.
Yadav on Tuesday night announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured workers.
A team of Madhya Pradesh officials headed by a Cabinet minister is headed to Banaskantha for coordination.
"Cabinet Minister Nagar Singh Chauhan accompanied by police and administration officials has been sent to the site for coordination. In this hour of crisis, our government stands with the families of the victims and is committed to provide all possible help," Yadav said.
Meanwhile, opposition parties in Gujarat targeted the ruling BJP government, accusing it of negligence.
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani demanded that the government provide Rs 1 crore as ex gratia to the families of the deceased and conduct a thorough investigation.
"The government is responsible for this tragedy. So far, 18 people have died. Gujarat's BJP government does not seem to care about people's well-being unless it impacts their election results," Mevani said.
He asked the government to release the correct toll of people killed in the incident.
AAP's Gujarat president, Isudan Gadhvi, criticised the administration for failing to monitor illegal firecracker factories.
"How can illegal factories operate without the administration's knowledge? Strictest action should be taken against those responsible, including BJP leaders and officials. If the government has the will, they should demolish the property of those guilty," he said.
