Karnataka Products Must Have Kannada Name, Usage Instructions: Government

Asserting that all industrial and consumer products manufactured in Karnataka must compulsorily display their names and usage instructions in Kannada along with other languages, the state government has directed authorities to ensure strict implementation of this rule.

The state government issued a circular to this effect on February 15, stating that the directive applies to both government and private sectors.

"...It is hereby directed that the names and instructions for use must be compulsorily printed in Kannada along with other languages on all industrial and consumer products manufactured in the government and private sectors within the state," the circular said.

The enforcement authorities designated under Section 9 of the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, have been instructed to monitor strict compliance with these instructions by all manufacturers of industrial and consumer goods in both government and private sectors, it added.

Noting that language reflects the culture, tradition, and values of the land, the circular emphasised that for a language to thrive, production, marketing, and business activities must be conducted in the local language.

To ensure the comprehensive development of the Kannada language and provide better opportunities for Kannadigas in all spheres of life, the government has implemented the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, effective from March 12, 2024.

It further stated that Section 17(7) of the Act mandates that, as far as possible, the names of all industrial and consumer products manufactured and sold within the state, along with their usage instructions, must be in Kannada along with any other language, if applicable.

Divider-Crossing, Wrong-Side Driving Cause 3-Bike Collision, 1 Killed

A series of unfortunate events led to three motorcycles colliding with each other in Bihar, killing one and critically injuring two others.

A video of the accident, which took place near Ara in Bhojpur district at 4.40 pm on Friday, shows one of the bikers riding over the divider and attempting to cross traffic on the other side of the four-lane road. The biker moves ahead, not realising that there is another speeding bike approaching him from the wrong side. The other motorcycle, with a rider and a pillion, rams the man's bike with such force that it goes and hits another two-wheeler - whose rider was driving slowly and on the right side.

The man who started off the chain of events by crossing the divider can be seen getting up and walking towards the wreckage of the two other bikes - where two other men stand up as well - before turning back.

Police said one person has been killed in the accident and two suffered serious injuries. The injured people have been referred to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, where their condition is said to be critical.

Think Tank Hosts Discussion On Strengthening Gender Dimension In Public Policy

Chintan Research Foundation, a Delhi-based think tank, hosted a roundtable Discussion on 'Strengthening the Gender Dimension in Public Policy' earlier this week, discussing India's remarkable progress made by women in female labour force participation, particularly in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

The discussion, which took place on Tuesday, highlighted the progress women made in sectors like aerospace, aviation, finance, entrepreneurship, executive leadership, politics, and governance as well as the challenges to overcome.

Moderated by Shishir Priyadarshi, President, CRF, the discussion featured women leaders who shared their experiences, challenges and insights on breaking barriers in their respective fields.

The panellists included Amb Ruchira Kamboj, the first woman diplomat to be appointed as the Indian Ambassador to the UN, Jaya Varma Sinha the first woman Chairperson of the Railway Board in the 166-year history of the Indian Railways, Rumjhum Chatterjee, the Chairperson of CII's National Council on Women's Empowerment and Inclusion, and Manjeet Kripalani Co-founder of Gateway House, a leading think tank located in Mumbai.

The key takeaways included: Gender-inclusive policies & safe work environments are essential for expanding women's participation. Leadership plays a crucial role in creating an inclusive ecosystem. Even a small change can make a large impact-e.g., Indian Railways now manufactures locomotives with toilets for women drivers, making a significant impact. Sisterhood and mentorship are game-changers and collaboration over the competition is the key. Think tanks and research institutions must bridge the gap between government, corporate sectors and societies to drive impactful change.

The think tank said India is making strides, but the journey towards making the workforce equitable is a long one.

Student, 14, Dies Of Heart Attack During Trip To Theme Park In Maharashtra

A 14-year-old student of a municipal school died after suffering a heart attack at a well-known theme park where he had gone on a trip with other pupils in Maharashtra's Raigad district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when students of a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation-run school in Ghansoli were on an educational trip to Imagicaa Theme Park in Khopoli, a police official said.

While on the trip, an eighth-grade student, Ayush Dharmendra Singh, started feeling uneasy and sat on the bench and then suddenly collapsed on the ground, he said.

The student was rushed to the primary health centre inside the park with the help of the facility's staff and teachers. He was then taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the official said.

A post-mortem was conducted in the presence of a government medical officer, in which it was ascertained the boy died due to a heart attack, he said.

An accidental death case has been registered at the Khalapur police station.

Man Undergoes Rare Transplant, Lives With 5 Kidneys In Delhi

A 47-year-old man has undergone a rare third kidney transplant at a private hospital here, leaving him with a total of five kidneys in his body.

A surgery was performed at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, on Devendra Barlewar, who had been battling chronic kidney disease for 15 years and had undergone two failed transplants in 2010 and 2012.

Dr. Ahmed Kamaal, Senior Consultant, Urology, said the patient's condition worsened further after COVID-19 complications in 2022.

However, when a 50-year-old brain-dead farmer's family decided to donate his kidneys, hope emerged for Barlewar.

The four-hour-long surgery, conducted last month, posed significant medical challenges due to the presence of four non-functioning kidneys -- two native and two previously transplanted ones, Kamaal said in a statement.

He explained that the multiple existing kidneys increased the risk of immune rejection, requiring specialised immunosuppression protocols before the procedure.

Dr. Anil Sharma, Senior Consultant, Urology, highlighted the surgical complexities, saying, "We faced space constraints due to the patient's thin build and an existing incisional hernia." "Since previous surgeries had already used the standard blood vessels, we had to connect the new kidney to the largest abdominal blood vessels, making it a highly intricate procedure," he said.

Despite the challenges, the transplant was successful, and the patient was discharged within ten days with stable kidney function.

Speaking about patient's condition, Dr Sharma said that Barlewar's creatinine levels normalised within two weeks, allowing him to live dialysis-free.

Expressing his gratitude, Barlewar said, that he had lost hope after two failed transplants.

He said that dialysis had severely restricted his life, but the at Amrita Hospital gave him another chance when no one else did.

He added that today, he can perform daily activities independently, and his overall health has also improved.

Crackdown On Illegal Travel Agents In Amritsar, Licenses Of 40 Cancelled

Punjab has cancelled the licenses of 40 travel agents amid a huge row over the deportation of Indians who migrated illegally to the US. Licenses of some IELTS centers have also been cancelled and such action will be taken in future as well, sources said.

Sources said the Amritsar police have taken action on the basis of a complaint against travel agents operating illegally from the city and more action could be expected in the coming days.

The police are continuously registering cases against travel agents who send Indians illegally and raids are being conducted to catch them, sources said.

The complainant in this case, Sarabjit Singh, said he had given a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni.

Government sources earlier said people from Punjab comprise the biggest chunk of the Indians being deported by the US. Three flights arrived on February 5, February 15 and February 16 in which 333 Indians were sent. Of them, the maximum people - 126 or 37.8 per cent - were from Punjab, sources said.

The clarification came days after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's objection to the flights landing in his state. Sources said because of the maximum number of Punjabis among the deportees, 21 flights have been landed in Amritsar since May 2020.

Instances of illegal immigration from Punjab -- where people eager for a better life are promised visas to travel abroad in exchange for large sums of money but are ultimately routed in on fake visas -- have been reported widely, adding the term "Dunki route" to the lexicon.

Reports said more than 3,200 police cases have been filed against travel agents in Punjab over the last three years.

There have been multiple arrests in such cases. Among them was Punjabi singer Fatehjit Singh, who ended up in the police net in September last year. The most popular destinations include the US, Canada, UK and Australia.

Obesity On Rise, Fats Should Form Only 20% Of Diet: AIIMS Delhi Director

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, Director M Srinivas on Sunday said cases of obesity are on the rise in rural areas, as much as they are in urban areas, and stressed the need to battle the disease, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the pressing concern and urged people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Mr Srinivas said the biggest challenge is that obesity is a "risk factor associated with everything". "The most common thing we understand is the disease of the heart," he said.

"Even in the rural areas, we are seeing more cases of obesity. It's not just the urban, but also rural pockets facing such problems," he added.

He also highlighted the importance of leading a good lifestyle and exercising, and developing good food habits. "We need to have a balanced diet. The focus should be on proteins because they build the body. The easiest way to control oil intake is also by consuming nuts, flax seeds, etc. Fats should not comprise more than 20% of the total diet. Consume good oil, around two to four teaspoons of oil may be, daily," he said.

During his monthly radio show Mann Ki Baat earlier in the day, PM Modi said obesity cases have doubled in the last few years, and the more concerning aspect has been the rise in such instances among children. "To become a fit and healthy nation, we have to tackle the problem of obesity. According to a study, today, one in every eight people is suffering from the problem of obesity," he said.

He urged people to use less oil in food and also pass on the challenge of reducing oil intake by 10 per cent to 10 others.

Mr Srinivas also said it is important to keep a check on the oil intake. "There are two components. Visible and invisible oil. Invisible oil is something, you know, when we take milk, there is an oil in that, there is a fat component in that. Visible oil is what we use everyday. Our consumption of cooking or visible oil is very high in the country, and it is rightly said that we need to restrict that and cut down on that," he said.

The AIIMS Delhi Director said an individual, depending on the gender, is likely to suffer from obesity if his/her waist measures 80cm-90cm. However, it is the abdominal obesity - a condition where there is too much fat around the stomach and abdomen - that is dangerous, he said.

Asked whether the problem of obesity is bigger than malnutrition, Mr Srinivas said: "I think we have to tackle both, because somebody is eating more and somebody is eating less. So somebody who is eating less, we need to tell them what is a balanced diet."

He added: "On the other hand, people who are not doing exercises and taking in more calories... that is something which needs to be restricted."

Judiciary Doesn't Have Right To Make Changes To Constitution: Vice President

The more we learn about the Constitution, which gives us our fundamental rights, the more we will turn towards nationalism, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said here on Saturday.

Addressing the inauguration event of the Constitution Awareness Year celebrations, he also said people must think of nationalism as their biggest religion, above politics and personal interests, and perform their duties in the face of challenges.

"There is a challenge before the country. By getting funds from outside, the democratic system is being made unholy. The persons of their (donors) choice is made to win polls. This is dangerous and cannot be tolerated," the VP said in an apparent reference to the recent revelations of alleged USAID funding to raise voter turnout in India.

"Awareness of our Constitution is what is of utmost need today. Our Constitution creators were ascetics who fought for the country's Independence. They wanted to create a Constitution that would meet the expectations of all. They resolved challenges through meaningful dialogue, high level of debate and not through boycotts. They never let the prestige of the temple of democracy go down," Mr Dhankhar said.

In an apparent reference to disruptions in parliamentary proceedings, the VP said people will have no way to get their issues resolved through discussions if Houses are not allowed to run.

"Why is there stress on the temples of democracy when dialogue can resolve every problem? Elected representatives must perform their duties faithfully, think of nationalism as their religion and Indianness as their identity," he asserted.

He said Constitution Day was being celebrated for the last 10 years to make the new generation aware that the country got freedom due to supreme sacrifices as well as to make them remember basic rights and democratic duties.

Observing the day is also important to remember the "darkest hour" when Emergency was declared on June 25,1975 by the then Indira Gandhi government, leading to trampling of fundamental rights of citizens, he said.

"Nine High Courts of the country in one voice said fundamental rights cannot be put on hold during Emergency. But the Supreme Court overturned the decisions of these nine courts and said the government will decide till when Emergency will be in force. Hence, to ensure the new generation remembers, June 25 is observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas," Mr Dhankhar said.

"The more we learn about the Constitution, the more it will turn us towards nationalism. The Constitution has given us fundamental rights. But these fundamental rights should be nurtured," he said.

Besides the signatures of those who took part in its drafting, the Constitution has 22 demonstrative images, including that of Satyamev Jayate, bull seal of Harappa Mohenjodaro, Lord Ram returning to Ayodhya after his victory over unrighteousness, Lord Krishna, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, all of which describe the country's 5000-year-old culture, the VP pointed out.

Only the Parliament and in some cases the state assemblies have the right to make changes to the Constitution, he said.

"No one else has this right, not even the judiciary. If there is need to make a definition, then the Supreme Court can keep its view on it," he opined

Driver Killed, 17 Injured As Bus Carrying Pilgrims Falls Into Gorge in J&K

A driver from Himachal Pradesh was killed and 17 pilgrims were injured when a bus returning from Mata Vaishno Devi shrine skidded off the road and plunged into a 30-feet gorge near Jammu on Saturday evening, officials said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the accident and praised the rescue teams and officials for their prompt and commendable effort.

The bus, bearing registration number UK-07PA-5640, was on its way to Delhi and the accident took place near Manda, nearly eight kilometres from the Jammu bus stand, the officials said.

They said a rescue operation was launched soon after the driver lost control while negotiating a curve and the bus plunged into the gorge.

All the 17 injured passengers were rescued and evacuated to the Government Medical College Hospital and their condition was stated to be "stable", the officials said.

However, the driver of the bus died on the spot and later his body was retrieved from the scene by a joint party of police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), traffic police and fire and emergency services personnel after a strenuous effort lasting more than two hours, the officials said.

They said the victim was identified as Rakesh. His body was shifted to the GMC Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

The injured pilgrims are from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, the officials said.

The chief minister extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and also wished a swift recovery to the injured.

Mizoram Plans To Amend Liquor Prohibition Law, May Allow Sale Of Wine, Beer

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday said his government was planning to amend the liquor prohibition law, which has been in force since May 2019, to allow the sale of wine and beer in the state.

During a discussion on the motion of thanks on the governor's address in the assembly, Lalduhoma said his government had no intention of lifting the ban on hard liquor but was planning to regulate the sale of wine and beer.

He said that a bill to amend the prohibition law will be introduced in the assembly during the ongoing budget session.

"Our excise and narcotics minister will introduce an amendment bill to the existing prohibition law to regulate the sale of beer and wine, during this ongoing budget session," he said.

The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act was enacted by the previous MNF government in 2019, which replaced the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition & Control) Act, 2014, brought by the then Congress government, allowing the sale of wine in the state.

The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act imposed a blanket ban on the sale, manufacture and consumption of liquor, including wine and beer, in the state, barring three autonomous district councils.

In September 2022, the government allowed the manufacture, sale and export of wines processed from locally-grown grapes following massive protests by grape growers.

The first wine shop in Mizoram was opened in 1984. After 11 years of relaxation and partial prohibition, the then Congress government introduced The Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1995, which imposed a complete ban on liquor.

The total prohibition remained until 2014 when the government allowed the sale of wine.

The prohibition in the Christian-majority state is often blamed for the prevalence of drug abuse among a large section of the youth.

Youtuber Ashish Chanchlani Moves Top Court, Seeks Cancelling Of Case

Youtuber Ashish Chanchlani has moved the Supreme Court seeking to quash or transfer to Mumbai an FIR registered in Guwahati in connection with a case of allegedly promoting obscenity in an online show.

Chanchlani is one of the persons named in the case registered in Assam, in which podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia is the key accused because of his controversial comments on the YouTube show 'India's Got Latent'.

The plea is listed for hearing before an top court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh on Friday.

In his plea, drafted through advocate Shubham Kulshreshtha and filed by advocate Manju Jaitley, Chanchlani has sought quashing of the FIR registered at Cyber police station Police Commissionerate, Guwahati Crime Branch, Assam.

"Quash the FIR bearing No. 03 of 2025 registered at Cyber PS Police Commissionerate, Guwahati Crime Branch, Assam as it was registered later," the plea said.

Alternatively, the Youtuber has sought transfer of the FIR registered at Cyber PS Police Commissionerate, Guwahati Crime Branch, Assam to Mumbai Police Station Nodal Cyber, Mumbai as FIR bearing No. 05 of 2025 registered at Mumbai Police Station Nodal Cyber, Mumbai was registered first.

The Gauhati High Court Tuesday granted interim bail to Chanchlani while hearing his anticipatory bail petition and asked him to be present before the investigating officer within 10 days.

Chanchlani's counsels had argued that their client did not utter anything in the show and the allegations in the FIR were made against the co-accused persons only.

The FIR was registered by the Guwahati Police on a complaint of an individual on February 10 under various sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhtia (BNS), Information Technology Act, Cinematograph Act and Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

The top court on February 18 granted interim protection from arrest to podcaster Allahbadia over his comments on a YouTube show while calling it "vulgar" and saying he had a "dirty mind" which put society to shame.

Andhra Relaxes Work Hours Of Muslims During Ramzan, BJP Welcomes Move

The TDP-led NDA government has permitted all Muslim employees in Andhra Pradesh to leave work an hour early from March 2 to March 30 in observance of Ramzan and the BJP's state unit welcomed the move, in stark contrast to the saffron party's stand on the same matter in neighbouring Congress-ruled Telangana.

BJP leader S Yamini Sharma said the saffron party, as part of the ruling coalition in the southern state, upholds the principles of 'Antyodaya' and 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' (development for all, together with all).

In its recent circular, the government said it "hereby permits all employees who profess Islam...to leave their offices/schools an hour early before closing time on all working days during the holy month of 'Ramzan'... from March 2 to March 30 to perform necessary rituals." The circular was issued by Mukesh Kumar Meena, Principal Secretary (Political).

This exemption has been granted to all Muslim contract and outsourced staff, including those working in ward and village secretariats. However, Meena noted that this permission would not be granted during exigencies requiring employees' presence in their respective departments.

The BJP in Andhra Pradesh welcomed the move.

"Our guiding principle is 'Antyodaya' and 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.' That is the perspective we follow. The BJP always supports 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' regardless of caste, creed, or religion," Yamini Sharma told PTI on Wednesday.

However, she emphasised that the BJP has never supported appeasement politics.

"Be it Jan Sangh or the BJP, our party has never engaged in any form of minority appeasement politics since its inception-unlike the Congress, which has pursued it for over 66 years," she told PTI Videos.

The BJP always aims for equality, regardless of caste, creed, or religion, Ms Sharma asserted.

Earlier, in neighbouring Telangana, another Telugu speaking state, BJP leader and Union Minister B Sanjay Kumar had strongly criticised the Congress government for granting a similar exemption. Firebrand Hindutva leader and party MLA T Raja Singh had also lashed out at the Telangana government over the matter.

Mr Kumar had questioned why such allowances are not extended to Hindu devotees observing 'Ayyappa Deeksha,' a 41-day vow of devotion to Lord Ayyappa, and others.

While a controversy erupted in Telangana over the decision to allow Muslim employees to leave an hour early, a BJP leader in Andhra Pradesh said the state being governed by the NDA comprising of TDP, BJP, and Janasena, the ruling party leaders have been avoiding the topic, as they do not wish to strain the alliance.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Law and Minority Welfare Minister NMD Farook thanked Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for releasing Rs 45 crore towards pending honoraria for 5,000 imams and muezzins.

Uddhav Thackeray Wanted To Make Eknath Shinde Chief Minister: Sanjay Raut

Uddhav Thackeray had planned to make Eknath Shinde the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the 2019 election, but he was foiled - first by ally BJP and then the allies of Maha Vikas Aghadi, senior Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut has said.  Among then MVA, he especially named veteran leader Sharad Pawar, saying he had objected to Mr Shinde.

"Shinde wanted to become CM, but top leaders of the MVA refused to work under him as he was junior to them," Mr Raut was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India. "It was Sharad Pawar, then president of the Nationalist Congress Party, and Ajit Pawar who opposed the plan to make Shinde chief minister," he added.

As for the BJP, "The BJP did not fulfil the promise of sharing the CM's post with the Shiv Sena, that was why Shinde lost the chance to head the government," Mr Raut said.

The BJP's refusal led to a massive political churning. Mr Thackeray broke off the party's decades-old alliance with the BJP and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with the Congress and the undivided Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar. He also became the Chief Minister.

It was Mr Shinde's rebellion two years later that split the Sena and brought down Uddhav Thackeray's government. Mr Shinde joined hands with the BJP and formed government, becoming its Chief Minister.

The two factions have been huge political rivals since and Mr Pawar's recent praise of Mr Shinde at a recent event did not go down well with Mr Thackeray's section.

He is now a deputy chief minister, along with Ajit Pawar who split the NCP a year later, in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government.

Clips Of Women's Check-Up At Hospital Shared On YouTube, Probe Ordered

After horror stories from changing rooms in hotels and malls with hidden cameras, several videos of women being examined at a maternity hospital in Gujarat have been uploaded to YouTube and Telegram channels, putting a question mark on the security of women at an institution widely considered to be safe.

The CCTV clips - showing nursing staff administering injections to women patients - from Rajkot's Payal Maternity Home were widely shared online and eventually came to the notice of Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Police.

When the hospital's director was questioned, he claimed that the CCTV server was hacked.

"I don't know how the hospital videos went viral. Our CCTV server seems to have been hacked. However, we are also unaware of why this happened and will inform the police. We will also lodge a complaint and cooperate with the police in investigating all the issues," Dr Amit Akbari, who works at the hospital, said.

A case has also been filed by the Rajkot Cyber Crime Police. The team has been interrogating the entire hospital staff, including doctors.

"The content of the videos is being investigated. We are investigating who took these videos and for what purpose. We will file a case under sections 66E, 67 of the Cyber Crime IT Act," police said.

Women, Children 'Not Restrained' In 2nd Deportation Flight To Amritsar: Report

Women and children were not restrained on the deportation flight carrying the second batch of Indian nationals that arrived in Amritsar on February 15, sources confirmed to ANI.

Meanwhile, the aircraft carrying the third batch of Indian nationals who had allegedly migrated illegally to the US also landed at Amritsar Airport on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured that the deportees would be treated properly and that all necessary arrangements had been made.

The Chief Minister stated that the deportees would stay in Amritsar for a few hours before being taken to their respective states.

"Our kids are the ones which are coming here anyway, so from here no one can go hungry, we will make arrangements. We have also made staying arrangements for them. They will stay here for a few hours and then go to their respective states as the flights have been booked by the Ministry of External Affairs already," Mr Mann said in a press conference in Amritsar on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, CM Mann came down heavily at the Centre over the treatment of deported Indian nationals, who had allegedly illegally migrated to the US.Alleging a conspiracy to 'defame' Punjabis.

Mr Mann said, "There is a conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis. The first plane landed in Amritsar. Now, a second plane will land in Amritsar.

The MEA should tell the criteria based on which Amritsar was selected to land the aircraft. You select Amritsar to defame Punjab."

This was the second such flight of deportees which has landed in Amritsar Airport after US President Donald Trump's inauguration.

Earlier on February 5, a US Air Force plane carrying Indian citizens who allegedly illegally migrated to the US arrived in Punjab's Amritsar.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is willing to take back its nationals if they live illegally in the United States and laid emphasis on the need to finish the "ecosystem" of human trafficking. PM Modi also expressed confidence that Trump will fully cooperate with India in finishing this ecosystem.

"Those who stay in other countries illegally do not have any legal right to be there. As far as India and the US are concerned, we have always said that those who are verified and are truly the citizens of India - if they live in the US illegally, India is ready to take them back," PM Modi said, answering a query at the joint press conference with President Trump after their bilateral talks.

He said most of the people staying illegally are from ordinary families and are misguided by human traffickers.

"But it doesn't stop just there for us. These are people from ordinary families. They are shown big dreams and most of them are such who are misled and brought here. So, we should attack this entire system of human trafficking. Together, it should be the effort of the US and India to destroy such an ecosystem from its roots so that human trafficking ends...Our bigger fight is against that entire ecosystem, and we are confident that President Trump will fully cooperate with India in finishing this ecosystem," he added.

Assam Orders Probe Against Pak National "Linked" To Congress MP's Wife

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday ordered the registration of a case against a Pakistani national, who is believed to have links with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife, for "trying to interfere in domestic matters" of the state and the country.

Mr Sarma also said that Elizabeth Colburn, Mr Gogoi's wife, will also be probed over her alleged links with Pakistan and its intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Besides, she will also be investigated over her alleged participation in the Lok Sabha election campaigns despite being a British citizen.

The erstwhile Kaliabor constituency was won by Mr Gogoi twice, from 2014 till 2024.

The developments - taken place during a cabinet meeting - came a day after Mr Gogoi threatened to move court over Mr Sarma and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s accusations against his wife.

There was no immediate reaction from the Congress leader on Mr Sarma's latest comment but earlier in the day, he said he does not want to get involved in "dirty and baseless" politics. He had also rejected the charges as "laughable and entertaining" in the past.

Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Mr Sarma said: "Multiple news reports, social media posts and other information in the public domain have surfaced regarding certain comments made by a Pakistan national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, aimed at disrupting communal harmony in Assam. Given the broader national security implications of this issue, particularly in Assam, the state cabinet has directed the DGP to register a case against Sheikh under appropriate provisions of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and other relevant laws."

The Chief Minister also alleged that an assessment of Mr Sheikh's social media activity and information available in the public domain shows he has been in contact with Ms Colburn.

"Apart from his engagements with Government of Pakistan, Ali Sheikh has also founded LEAD Pakistan, a non-profit organisation working in the field of climate change. Elizabeth Gogoi was an integral part of LEAD Pakistan during her time spent in Islamabad. Both Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi have been a part of global climate action group called the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) which operates in both India and Pakistan," he said.

In light of these facts and given the historical attempts of Pakistani state and non-state actors to destabilise Assam, the state government took Mr Sheikh's attempts to interfere in the domestic matters of the state and India with utmost seriousness, he added.

A controversy erupted on February 12 when BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Ms Colburn shared ties with the ISI while she worked with the Climate and Knowledge Development Network in Islamabad under Mr Sheikh, a former advisor to the Planning Commission of Pakistan.

Mr Sarma, without naming Mr Gogoi, also raised similar accusations the same day, prompting a sharp retort from the Congress leader. He counter attacked with a movie reference. "If Salman Khan's wife can be an ISI agent like in 'Tiger Zinda Hai', then I must be a RAW agent too," Mr Gogoi said.

On Saturday, Mr Sarma said a police case is likely to be registered and a Special Investigation Team be constituted to probe into the allegations against the opposition leader's wife.

The Chief Minister alleged that after Ms Colburn married Mr Gogoi, Mr Sheikh must have gained access to the Chief Minister's Office.

He also alleged that Mr Gogoi's visit to the Pakistan embassy has been confirmed. "In the Lok Sabha, the MP asked questions on nuclear radars, uranium mines in Meghalaya and other such sensitive matters. What was the need to know such things by an Assam MP? I hope he and his wife will cooperate in the probe, otherwise they will be summoned," he said.

Mr Sarma also alleged that Ms Colburn campaigned for her husband prior to two Lok Sabha elections in Kaliabor constituency.

"How could a British national take part in Indian elections? She was directly involved with the election process and we can see old TV clippings. That means she violated visa norms. If so, the Indian government should examine it and revoke her visa," he said.

The Chief Minister said when he meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah the next time, he will discuss how the state government's proactiveness can be synergised with central agencies.

It looks like Mr Gogoi is just an actor, and not the director, in the entire system, Mr Sarma said. "Maybe, he is trapped unintentionally. So, we will examine the matter with a sympathetic outlook. We don't want to accuse him at this moment," he said.

"The way London, America and Islamabad are involved, he may be blackmailed also, who knows about it? Therefore, the entire subject requires serious deep investigation," he added.

Mr Sarma said he will submit "all documents" to state Congress President Bhupen Borah, so that they can verify the facts themselves. "Perhaps, the Congress is unaware of the full picture," he said.

"When the case is investigated, I will write a letter to Borah to inform him about the background and the reasons behind our decision to pursue the matter. The letter I will give to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) will also be given to INC chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Borah. This is a matter of national security," he said.

Earlier in the day, Mr Gogoi said that instead of getting involved in "dirty and baseless" politics, the Congress is working on how to give a new economy, social order, education and health policy to Assam. "I have no objection to that if he (Mr Sarma) wants to spend the next 12 months like this only. I am grateful for that," the Congress leader said.

10 Injured After Maha Kumbh Rush Triggers Chaos At Delhi Railway Station

At least 10 people were injured after a sudden rush of passengers caused by two trains for the Maha Kumbh being delayed led to an overcrowding situation at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, officials said. At least four people fell unconscious and had to be hospitalised.

The chaotic situation developed around 8 pm on platform numbers 14 and 15 of the station as passengers were waiting to board trains to Prayagraj.

Officials said additional security forces have been deployed to control the situation at the railway station and four fire engines were also rushed to the spot. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is on the way to the station, said the situation is under control.

"Situation under control at New Delhi railway station (NDLS). Delhi Police and RPF (railway police force reached. Injured taken to hospital. Special trains being run to evacuate sudden rush," the minister posted on X.

Railway authorities have urged people not to believe rumours of a stampede.

Videos showed a massive crowd at the platform as a train rolled in. Officials said there was a rush to board the train as well as panic when passengers realised that not all of them would be able to get in. In the videos, at least two people were also seen lying unconscious as passengers around them attempted to resuscitate them.

"When the Prayagraj Express was on platform number 14, many people were present there. The Swatatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani (both of which pass through Prayagraj) were delayed and passengers of these trains were also present on platforms 12, 13 and 14," said a police official.

Special trains for the Maha Kumbh have been witnessing ever larger crowds with the festival, which is held only once every 12 years, set to end on February 26. Earlier this week, some passengers at Bihar's Madhubani railway station broke the glass windows of the Swatantrata Senani Express - which goes to Delhi via Prayagraj - after they were unable to board the train.

Other similar incidents related to trains heading to Prayagraj have also been reported from other railway stations in Bihar and police cases have been registered.

"How Can Chief Justice...": Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's Big Remark On Separation Of Powers

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said that the Chief Justice of the country shouldn't be involved in any executive appointment in a democracy like India. "How can in a country like ours or in any democracy, by statutory prescription, the Chief Justice of India participate in the selection of the CBI director? Can there be any legal rationale for it?" Mr Dhankhar wondered.

"I can appreciate that the Statutory prescription took shape because the executive of the day has yielded to a judicial verdict. But the time has come to revisit. This surely does not merge with democracy. How can we involve the Chief Justice of India with any executive appointment?" he added.

His statement has come at a time when a meeting is to be held for the selection of the next Chief Election Commissioner. The selection would be a first since the Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service And Term of Office) Act, 2023, was passed.

The act came after a verdict by the Supreme Court in March 2023 which directed for a three-member panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice (CJI) to operate till Parliament enacted a law. The new law, however, excluded the CJI from the panel. Detractors say the new law amounts to excessive interference of the executive in the appointments and was detrimental to the independence of the poll panel.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is set to retire on February 18 and the selection committee for appointing his successor is expected to meet possibly on Monday.

The committee - comprised of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, will deliberate on the appointment a day before the Supreme Court hears petitions against the new law.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, while speaking at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal expressed his deep concern over the breach of the principle of separation of powers and said, "Executive governance by judicial decree is a Constitutional paradox, that the largest democracy on the planet cannot afford any longer. When institutions forget their bounds, democracy is remembered by the wounds this forgetfulness imparts."

He said that these institutions should operate within defined constitutional bounds while "maintaining cooperative dialogue, keeping national interest in mind".

"Executive governance reflecting the will of the people is constitutionally sanctified. Accountability is enforceable when executive roles are performed by an elected government. Governments are accountable to the legislature. And periodically accountable to the electorate. But if executive governance is arrogated or outsourced, the enforceability of accountability will not be there. Exclusively, governance lies with the government with utmost respect, any intervention from any source, in the country or outside, from legislature or judiciary, is antithetical to constitutionalism and certainly not in consonance as with fundamental premise of democracy", he added.

Recalling his stint as Parliamentary Affairs Minister in 1990, Mr Dhankhar said the Supreme Court then had eight judges.

"More often than not, all the eight judges sat together (on a bench hearing a case)....When the strength of the Supreme Court was eight judges, under Article 145(3), there was a stipulation that the interpretation of the Constitution will be by a bench of five judges or more," he said.

"Please note, when this strength was eight, it (size of constitutional bench) was five. And the Constitution allows the highest court of the land to interpret the Constitution," he added.

But under the guise of interpretation, there can be no "arrogation of authority", and the essence and spirit which the founding fathers had in mind under Article 145(3) must be respected, the vice president further said.

Article 145(3) of the Constitution of India states that at least five judges are required to sit on a case involving the interpretation of the Constitution.

Mr Dhankhar, speaking about Judicial review, said, "Parliament is supreme in lawmaking subject to judicial review. It's a good thing. The judicial review has to be on the anvil that the legislation is in conformity with the Constitution. But when it comes to making an amendment in the Indian Constitution, the ultimate repository, the ultimate power, the ultimate authority, and the last authority is only the Indian Parliament."

He said in this case there can't be any intervention from any quarter because the "will of the people is reflected in a representative manner on the most sanctified platform through elections."

Mr Dhankhar further said the judiciary's public presence must be through judgments as "other mode of expression other than through judgments avoidably undermines institutional dignity".

"When we look around the globe, we never find judges reflecting the way we see here on all issues," he added.

Stressing the importance of dialogue, the Vice President said that democracy gets "thinner" if the right to express is "compromised, or throttled, or diluted".

"One facet of expression is right to vote. But more important is to express your views, your point of view. You participate in governance, and administration, by having a voice of expression. And this expression is not standalone. This expression requires dialogue. Expression without dialogue means my way or no way. Dialogue is nothing but reflection, either approval of your expression or the other point of view," he said.

"A difference of opinion should not result in confrontation. A difference of opinion must ignite an urge in us to converse to find a common ground. And sometimes yielding is a better part of discretion," he added.

Anti-Money Laundering Law Misused Like Dowry Law: Supreme Court

The PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) is being used repeatedly to keep people in jail, the Supreme Court said today. A bench pulling up the Enforcement Directorate, said the law is being "misused like the dowry law". The provisions of PMLA cannot be used to keep someone in jail forever, said the two-judge bench of Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih today, granting bail to Arun Pati Tripathi, a former Excise officer from Chhattisgarh.

Tripathi was accused of money laundering in the Chhattisgarh liquor scam case and was arrested in 2023. But despite receiving bail in the current case, he will not be released as he faces another case filed by the Economic Offences Wing.

Lately, the Supreme Court has been critical of central agencies, pulling them up for keeping accused, including political leaders, in jail interminably without evidence. Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had repeatedly spoken on bail and not jail being the norm.

While giving bail to AAP's Sanjay Singh in the excise policy case, the top court had pointed out that "Nothing has been recovered... there is no trace (of money allegedly received by the AAP as bribes for allotting liquor licences to the 'South Group')".

While granting bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha in the same case, the court had said it will keep an eye on "fairness and impartiality".

The Prevention of Money Laundering Act or PMLA is non-bailable since unlike other laws, anyone accused under it has to prove that he is not guilty.

An accused gets bail only when the court is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that he is not guilty of the offense, and not likely to commit any further offense while on bail.

This provision --- listed under Section 45 of the law - was upheld earlier by the Supreme Court. The court, though, allowed bail earlier to an ailing accused, saying the "Proviso to Section 45 (1) of PMLA specifically contemplates that a person who 'is sick or infirm' may be released on bail if the special court so directs".

Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected Tripathi's bail plea, taking serious objection to his WhatsApp chats with other accused in the case.  "We could have granted you bail right away but we are not doing it for two reasons. Look at the WhatsApp chats. What business you had to share holograms with Anwar Dhebar and he then sends it to Anil Tuteja," the bench had said.

Dhebar, a businessman having political links is alleged to be one of the kingpins in the case, is accused of running a cartel by taking commissions from the liquor retailers and influencing policy decisions with the help of Tripathi, who was then the chairman of Chhattisgarh Marketing Corporation and former bureaucrat Anil Tuteja.

Rahul Gandhi Summoned By Court For Alleged Remarks Against Indian Army

Congress's Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by a court in Lucknow in connection with his alleged derogatory remarks against the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Mr Gandhi will have to appear before the Lucknow MP MLA court -- a special court that can try cases against MPs and MLAs -- in the last week of March.

Former director of Border Road Organization or BRO Uday Shankar Srivastava had filed the complaint against Mr Gandhi on basis of which the defamation case was registered.

Mr Gandhi had apparently made the remarks on the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022.

The comment that "Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel in Arunachal Pradesh" - a dig at the government over Chinese action at the Line of Actual Control -- drew sharp criticism from many quarters and led to a massive political row.

Many BJP leaders had declared that Mr Gandhi as anti-national, accused his family of receiving Chinese hospitality and funds in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

It did not deter Mr Gandhi who continued to target the government over the China issue.

In March 2023, Mr Gandhi was barred from attending for a while after he was found guilty in a defamation case for a remark targetting Prime Minister M Narendra Modi over his last name. The Gujarat court which was hearing the case, sentenced him to a two-year jail term.

Though the sentence was suspended, the duration was exactly what was needed to bar leaders from parliament, the Opposition pointed out, calling it a conspiracy against the Congress leader.

Mr Gandhi later received relief from the Supreme Court, which put his conviction on hold, pointing out that the trial judge has awarded the maximum sentence of two years in the case. If the sentence was a day lesser, it would not have attracted disqualification, the court had added in its judgment.

Amid Dissent In Karnataka Unit, BJP Stands By Party Chief Vijayendra

The BJP has backed its Karnataka leader amid massive infighting in the state unit, reprimanding one rebel and issuing a show cause notice to another. Snubbing those who have been pushing for the replacement of BY Vijayendra as the party chief, the BJP's central leadership has refused to entertain their complaints against him.

"The party has taken note of your continuing tirade and breach of discipline, in clear contravention of the discipline code in the party constitution," read the show cause notice to Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatmal, to which he has to reply within 72 hours.

The party chief has been facing challenge from hardliners since the Lok Sabha election and all factions of the party have gone to Delhi to meet the party high command.

The rebel camp, including MLAs Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, BP Harish, former MLA Kumar Bangarappa and former Union Minister GM Siddeshwara,  had also planned to file a complaint against Karnataka state in-charge Radha Mohan Das Agarwal.

In Delhi, the central leaders, upset with the row in the only southern state where the party has a footprint, refused to meet the rebel group.

The group managed to meet former Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai and asked him to take the lead. But reports said Mr Bommai had declined, saying he would abide by the party's decision regarding the leadership.

The senior leadership of the party expressed outrage against the rebel camp for tarnishing the party's image. The Delhi leaders have also reprimanded former minister and BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi for making a false statement to the media, claiming that the group met party chief JP Nadda.

Last week, BJP MLA Suresh Gowda had said Vijayendra has been effectively leading the party and called for action against the rebel leaders.

"It is inappropriate to criticise former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. If party leaders themselves make negative statements against him, it will deeply hurt party workers. Yediyurappa was instrumental in bringing the BJP to power in the state. Rebels like MLA Yatnal should address their concerns internally instead of making public statements," he said.

Man Travelling To US Via 'Dunki' Route Dies Of Cardiac Arrest In Guatemala

Punjab State Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal met with the family members of Gurpreet Singh, who wanted to go to America via the 'Dunki' route and died on the way at Guatemala of heart attack.

Mr Dhaliwal met the mourning family and told ANI that he will appeal to people to not go to any other country illegally.

"We have a lot of youth here. In the last two or three months, we have been struggling with the situation in America. The deceased had reached Guatemala. They were trying to reach the US through 'dunki' route. There he died with a heart attack," Mr Dhaliwal said.

"This is a request that no one should go illegally," he said

Mr Dhaliwal added that he has initiated a process to retrieve the body of the man who died.

"The deceased man, who was 33-year-old, was trying to go to America, through different countries. Their parents were also upset. They demand that they should be given their dead bodies. We have already started a process from our department in Punjab to get the dead body. But I request all the Punjab's parents and all the young people to not go anywhere through illegal way," the Punjab minister said.

"But this is an illegal way. The way of the donkey route is illegal. Look, how much damage has been done. They told us that they have lost Rs 36 lakh. So, this is the damage that is being done. And whoever wants to go, go legally. Going through illegal dunki, this is very sad," he said.

Gurpreet's brother, Tara Singh, told ANI that his brother had the 'American dream', for which he left three months back.

"My younger brother Gurpreet Singh, who had gone to America three months ago. He talked to a Chandigarh agent Balwinder Singh. He made a deal worth Rs 16.5 lakhs. He had sent my brother to Guyana. After that, there was a Pakistani agent named Mohammed. We found out that he was Pakistani only after his death. He spoke to him himself. He took the road to Colombia through the jungle of Panama. He had already taken the payment of 18-20 lakhs from the Pakistani Agency. He said he would take first payment and then take him by air. But he didn't, and instead took him by foot. He said they would leave in the jungle in about 25 hours. In Guatemala, they met with other people who were staying at the hotel. One of them called us and told us that he was dying. He sat in the car and said that he was having a breathing problem. In 5-7 minutes he said that he was attacked and he died," he said.

Singh said that it was his message to not repeat the same mistake his brother made.

"I will give a message, don't make such a mistake like my brother did. We had stopped him a lot, but he had only one thought in his mind that I have to go to America," he said.

He also said that he requested the government to bring his brother's remains back.

"I just want to get my brother's mortal remains back from the government," he said.

Gurpreet's brother also said that agents who promise to take people by air, but don't, must be penalized.

"Agents who take people illegally, should be held. They take the payment first, then the agent doesn't listen. They take them in their own way. Sometimes they put them in the chicken cart and take them. Sometimes they take them in the water tanker. I don't know anything. Instead of spending so much money, work here. It will be good," he said.

The news came as the US deported several Indian nationals who had allegedly migrated illegally to the United States. A US military C-17 Globemaster aircraft landed in Punjab's Amritsar on February 5 with 104 Indian nationals.

"There's More Oil In Market Than Takers": Union Minister Ahead Of India Energy Week

Highlighting that India has diversified its sources of oil supply for cheaper purchases, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the country is now importing oil from 39 countries against 27 earlier.

"India has diversified its sources of oil supply, earlier we were importing crude oil from 27 countries now we are importing from 39 countries. If I can buy some from some source and I can buy it at a cheaper price, we are the winners," Puri said in a BBC interview, which he shared in his social media post on X.

The remarks of the Union Minister comes at a time when India is gearing up to host world's second largest energy event, India Energy Week (IEW) which is scheduled to be held in Delhi from 11-14 February.

On the cheaper oil purchases, Minister said, "We have diversified our sources of supply, which were 27 countries and we are importing from 39 countries now. But today nobody is vulnerable to external oil. There's more oil coming on the international market."

Minister further said that International Energy Agency (IEA) is right regarding the total demand increase in the next two decades, "25% will come from India. On that they are totally correct. But today there's more oil in the market than there are takers."

The Union Minister also clarified that the India is not purchasing cheaper oil from Russia against the wishes of United States.

"It is not against the wishes of the United States. Let me enlighten you. What the United States told us and told many others, is that they wanted us to buy as much oil from Russia as we like, as long as we bought it at a reasonable price and that was music to my ears. There's no sanction on Russian oil then or now, none whatsoever," he said.

"Let me share what actually has happened. There have never been sanctions on Russian energy per se. Russian oil coming or gas coming through a pipeline to Hungary has been exempt all along. Russian energy going through a pipeline to Japan has been exempt. And today Europe is also buying 20-25% of its gas from Russia. So what the US said, buy as much you like, buy it reasonable. There was a something called a price cap. Now it's music to my ears. If I can buy from some source and I can buy it at a cheaper price, we are the winners," he added.

The main point to notice there is more oil coming on the global market, mostly from the Western Hemisphere, then there is need for that oil. So whenever there is a situation of more oil availability, the vulnerability does not arise.

In the report 'Indian Oil Market Outlook to 2030', released at the second edition of India Energy Week 2024 in Goa, mentioned that India will become the largest source of global oil demand, while growth in developed economies and China initially slows and then subsequently goes into reverse.

Meanwhile, IEA is set to share insights on the India's oil and gas sector during the 3rd edition of India Energy Week (IEW) here in the national capital from February 11.

Besides, IEW will also witness sharing of market insights by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Chief of IEA and OPEC are arriving in India to attend the second-largest energy event globally. Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director Emeritus, International Energy Agency (IEA) will share his insights on India's energy demand.

On day two of IEW, there is a session on The World Oil Outlook (WOO), which is one of OPEC's flagship publications, combining the expertise of the OPEC Secretariat and professionals in OPEC Member countries.

The 18th edition of the WOO will likely examine developments in energy and oil demand, oil supply and refining, the global economy, policy and technology, demographic trends, environmental issues and sustainable development.

Other than OPEC Chief Haitham AL Ghais, OPEC Director, Research Division Ayed Al-Qahtand Abderrezak Benyoucef Head, Energy Studies Department, Research Division of OPEC will be also there to share their insights on OPEC's commitment to knowledge-sharing and data transparency.

Great Indian Bustard Found Dead Inside Cage In Rajasthan. Why It Matters?

A five-year-old Great Indian Bustard, one of the rarest bird species in the world, was found dead inside a cage at a breeding centre in Jaisalmer's Sudasari village.

Listed as 'critically endangered' on the IUCN Red List since 2011, the Great Indian Bustard is one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.

DNP Deputy Forest Conservator Bujmohan Gupta said an injury mark was found on the bird's head during examination after it was brought to the Desert National Park (DNP) office.

"Yesterday we received information about the death of a female Great Indian Bustard. The Great Indian Bustard is the state bird of Rajasthan and their number is very less in our country...The Great Indian Bustard had a head injury...The medical department conducted the post-mortem and the last rites were performed as per protocol. We will send samples to Bareilly and Dehradun," the Deputy Forest Conservator said in a video posted on X by ANI.

The population of the rare bird, almost exclusively in found in India, has steadily declined by 75% in last 30 years, according to a report by the Wildlife Institute Of India.

Samples from the bird's body have been sent to a laboratory in Dehradun to determine the cause of death, officials said. The bird was cremated as per protocol, confirmed Mr Gupta.

The population of the rare bird, almost exclusively in found in India, has steadily declined by 75% in last 30 years, according to a report by the Wildlife Institute Of India.

Preliminary reports suggest that the bird may have collided with the cage while flying or succumbed to another cause, say officials. However, the exact reason will be determined only after the laboratory analysis of the samples, Mr Gupta added.

World Wide Fund for Nature (India) says one of the biggest threat to this species is hunting. This is followed by occasional poaching outside Protected Areas, collisions with high tension electric wires, fast moving vehicles and free-ranging dogs in villages.

In response to another query, Singh said 12 Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces were "reported to have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict." Man 'Mistaken To Be Wild Animal' Shot Dead By Hunting Expedition Group

A hunting expedition by a group of villagers went fatally wrong as one of them was shot dead by some other members, who allegedly mistook him for a wild boar in a forest area in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Wednesday.

One person was injured in the incident that took place in the night of January 28, they said, adding that at least six men have been detained in this connection.

Palghar's Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Abhijit Dharashivkar said the group of villagers had ventured into Borsheti forest area at Manor in the district for hunting of wild boars.

"During the expedition, some villagers got separated from the group. After some time, one of the hunters mistook them for wild boars and opened fire, hitting two villagers. One of them died on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries," he said.

Shocked and panicked by the accidental killing, the group dragged the deceased person's body into the bushes and hid it instead of reporting about the incident to the police, he said.

"After receiving a tip-off, the police conducted a probe and detained six villagers suspected to be involved in the crime. After an extensive search on Wednesday, the authorities recovered the highly decomposed body of the victim and sent it for a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of the death," Dharashivkar said.

There are reports that the injured villager also succumbed to his wounds during treatment and his body has been cremated by the villagers without informing the authorities. However, the police are trying to ascertain it and conducting investigation into it, he said, adding that an FIR is being registered against the accused.

2 Fetuses Successfully Removed From Newborn's Abdomen In Maharashtra

Days after a woman was detected with 'fetus in fetu', an extremely rare condition, two fetuses were removed successfully post-delivery from her three-day-old child's abdomen in Amravati district of Maharashtra on Tuesday, doctors said.

The 32-year-old woman from Buldhana district was detected with the rare congenital anomaly, in which a malformed fetus is located within the body of another fetus, last month when she underwent sonography as part of regular health check-up.

The woman delivered a baby boy on February 1 at Buldhana Women's Hospital. Subsequently, she and the child were shifted to a super specialty government hospital in Amravati district where a team of doctors operated upon the newborn to remove two fetuses from his stomach, they said.

The boy was operated under the supervision of Dr Usha Gajbhiye at Amravati Divisional Hospital.

Talking to reporters, Dr Gajbhiye said there were two twins like fetuses with hands and legs in the stomach of the three-day-old child.

The fetuses were removed successfully during the operation and the baby and mother were doing well, she said.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Buldhana hospital, Dr Prasad Agarwal, who conducted sonography on the woman when she was 35-week pregnant, told reporters last Tuesday that 'fetus in fetu' is one of the rarest medical conditions, occurring one in five lakh cases.

Only about 200 such cases have been reported (across the world) till now, that, too, after delivery, including 10-15 cases in India, he had said.

"But I was lucky and vigilant enough to notice something very unusual with this baby, grossly normal growing fetus with a few bones and a fetus-like structure in its abdomen," Dr Agarwal said.

"It struck me immediately that this is not normal. It was 'fetus in fetu', one of the rarest cases in the world. We asked for a second opinion and the case was confirmed by radiologist Dr Shruti Thorat," he had said.

Couple Gets Married At Police Station After Wedding Called Off Over Food

A wedding ritual in Surat that was abruptly halted due to an alleged shortage of food at the venue was completed at a police station, after the bride approached the cops against the groom's family's decision to snap ties, despite his willingness to marry her.

The incident took place in Varachha area of Surat on Sunday.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alok Kumar, the couple, Rahul Pramod Mahto and Anjali Kumari - both of whom are from Bihar - were supposed to get married at Lakshmi Hall.

At the wedding hall, the couple had nearly completed their rituals when the ceremony was abruptly halted by the groom's family over an alleged shortage of food that was being served to relatives and guests.

"Most of the rituals were completed. Only the exchange of garlands were left. The two families had an argument over an alleged shortage of food, following which the groom's side refused to go ahead with the wedding," Mr Kumar said.

Upset by the behaviour of the groom's family, the bride and her family approached the police for help, the DCP said. "The woman said Mr Mehto is ready to proceed with the wedding but his family wasn't agreeing," he said.

Police said the groom and his family were then summoned to the police station to resolve the matter with the bride's family.

"The groom's family agreed to continue the wedding after we helped them resolve the matter. The bride raised concerns over the possibility of a fresh fight if they returned to the marriage hall. So we allowed them to complete the rituals (exchange of garlands) and get married at the police station," Mr Kumar said.

He added that police decided to intervene keeping in mind the woman's future. "We adopted a positive attitude and helped them get married," he said.

Meitei Body Asks Centre To Set Up Specialised Anti-Narcoterrorist Force

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged the central government to set up a dedicated anti-narcotics bureau in the northeastern region.

The conglomerate of civil society organisations based in the state capital Imphal also appealed to the Centre to declare the region as a "narco-terrorist emergency zone".

In a memorandum addressed to the chief ministers of northeastern states, COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba said, "We urge the government of India to officially declare the northeastern region as a narco-terrorist emergency zone to highlight the gravity of the situation and mobilise national resources accordingly."

The COCOMI demanded the establishment of a "specialised anti-narcotics bureau or force dedicated to combating drug trafficking and narco terrorism in the region".

The bureau should work transparently and coordinate with the state governments and local authorities, COCOMI said in the memorandum.

The organisation called for a thorough investigation into "alleged complicity of influential individuals and entities in Manipur, Mizoram and Myanmar's Chin state in supporting narco terrorism activities".

It sought measures to destroy infrastructure supporting drug smuggling and illegal arms trafficking as well.

Big Cut For Intelligence Units In Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget 2025

Intelligence gathering has taken a back seat in the Union Budget 2025-26 as the Centre has reduced the flow of funds of several verticals that deal with intelligence collection and dissemination, including the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) - the apex body for all matters concerning internal and external security.

According to Notes on Demand for Grants (2025-26), Rs 182.75 crore has been allocated to NSCS in comparison to Rs 270.08 crore (revised estimate) last financial year.

The budget of the Intelligence Bureau was also reduced by around Rs 100 crore. Last year, Rs 3,966 crore was allocated to the agency in the revised Budget but this year, the amount has been reduced to Rs 3,893 crore.

"This (reduction) indicates that the number of personnel working in these two arms of the intelligence apparatus are being reduced as revenue in both heads have come down," a senior officer explained, seeking anonymity.

According to the officer, salaries, pensions and other expenses of intelligence personnel fall under the head of revenue, and the capital suggests a new set up is being built.

The Notes on Demand for Grants said that out of Rs 182.75 crore allocated to NSCS, Rs 127.51 crore is being granted under the revenue head.

Similarly, for the Intelligence Bureau, of the Rs 3,893 crore, Rs 3,662 crore has been allocated under the revenue head.

For the Intelligence Bureau, only Rs 230 crore has been allocated for capital expenditure. The amount last year was about Rs 437 crore, even though it was reduced to Rs 307 crores in the revised Budget.

Interestingly, the budget of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) has also seen a reverse swing this time. Last year, Rs 247.72 crore was allocated to NATGRID in the revised Budget, but this time, only Rs 158.23 crore has been set aside. As per estimates, about 36% of its budget has been slashed by the government.

The NATGRID is another crucial intelligence arm of the country and provides back end support to counter security threats.

Funds for the Special Protection Group (SPG), another elite force that looks after the security of the Prime Minister of India, were also reduced. Rs 489 crore has been allocated this year, which is around Rs 22 crore less than last year. In 2024-25, the revised budget was Rs 510.97 crore.
