Pay Legal Expenses, Husband Told As Court Annuls Child Marriage Of Woman

Married off at the age of just four months, a woman came out of a 20-year unwanted situation on Monday when a family court annulled her child marriage.

Unlike the previous annulment of the marriages solemnised in childhood, this annulment was different as the court ordered her husband to remit the expenditure incurred by Anita in the litigation process.

Daughter of a peasant father, Anita had been married off when she was four months old. When Anita attained the age of 15 years, her in-laws began pressurising the family to send her to the husband's house.

She resisted all such attempts with support from her elder sister and brother and later she came into contact with Kriti Bharti, managing trustee of Saarthi Trust.

"On Monday, the presiding officer of the family court, Varun Talwar, ordered the annulment and also directed the in-laws to reimburse her with the litigation expenditure," said Bharti.

"Child marriage is not only a vice but also a crime. This spoils the future of children. If the girl or boy does not want to continue the child marriage, then they have the right to cancel the child marriage. To eradicate the evil of child marriage, significant efforts are needed at the society level," the order read.

Anita's parents were initially against their daughter's decision but when Bharti began counselling them, they consented to support her decision to not to go to her in-laws and annul the marriage.

With the support of her family, we moved the family court and filed a plea for annulment of her marriage, Bharti said.

The husband and her family issues threats to Anita and Bharti despite her attempts to counsel them as well, she said.

The family court, on Monday, annulled the marriage and ruled in Anita's favour, Bharti added.

Ecstatic at the court order, Anita, now a final-year BA student, said she has got a fresh lease of life. "Now I will focus on my studies and will prepare for competitive exams and higher education," Anita said.

France Submits Final Price Offer To India For 26 Rafale Marine Jet Deal

France has submitted the final price offer to India for the 26 Rafale Marine Jet deal just ahead of the scheduled visit of Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to the country.

Defence sources told ANI that the best and final price offer has been submitted to the Indian authorities by the French side for the project and a significant price reduction has been given after tough negotiations in the proposed contract.

India and France are negotiating the deal for buying 26 Rafale Marine jets which are going to be deployed on the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier and different bases.

The two sides had also held negotiations last week when a French team was in the national capital for finalizing the discussions with India.

The deal is scheduled to be taken up for discussion during the India-France Strategic Dialogue where the Indian NSA is scheduled to meet his French counterparts from tomorrow in Paris.

The deal is important for the Indian Navy as it is looking at strengthening its maritime strike capability.

India has also approved deviations in the letter of request, which is the tender document equivalent in government-to-government deals, like the integration of the indigenous Uttam radar in the jets for the Indian Navy.

Sources said that the integration would have taken a longer time of around eight years along with a high price to be paid to the French side for doing so.

India had also asked France for integration of indigenous weapons on the plane. This includes the Astra beyond visual range missiles along with the Rudram anti-radiation missiles.

The sources added that the price for the deal has been based on the agreements over rate it inflation to be taken into account and would be using the previous deal for 36 Rafale fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force as the basis.

Some of the Indian Air Force requirements have also been incorporated in the naval deal which will include around 40 drop tanks and a small number of work stations for the planes.

The Indian side is also going to get more number of long-range air-to-air Meteor missiles and with the anti-ship weaponry in this project planned to be concluded before the end of this financial year.

Train Hits Stone Placed On Railway Track In UP, No Damage Reported

The engine of a train hit a stone placed on the railway track in the Bairia area here on Saturday, officials said, adding that no damage was caused.

The incident assumes significance as it was a fresh one amid several cases of gas cylinders, pillars etc being found on railway tracks in Uttar Pradesh.

Public Relations Officer of the North Eastern Railway Ashok Kumar told PTI that on Saturday a stone was found on the railway track between on the Varanasi-Ballia-Chhapra rail section at 10.25 am.

He said the cattle guard of the engine of the 15054 Lucknow-Chhapra Express going from Lucknow to Chhapra (Bihar).

Kumar said that on seeing the stone placed on the track, the loco pilot applied emergency brakes.

He said that after inspection, the train resumed its journey and the loco pilot did not report any kind of damage in this incident.

SHO of the Bairia police station Ramayan Singh said the incident happened in front of Yadav Nagar of the Chand Diyar village before the Manjhi bridge on UP-Bihar border. He said that a passenger train had also passed through this route half an hour before the Lucknow-Chhapra Express train.

Meanwhile, Circle Officer (Bairia) Mohammad Usman said that at around 10.40 am on Saturday, about 300 metres before the Manjhi railway bridge, some sleeper coaches of the train got scratched due to the engine's safety guard hitting the stone in the middle of the track.

"On receiving the information, we immediately reached the spot with the police force and inspected it," he said, and added that the local police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) are investigating the spot.

Prior to Saturday's incident, on September 22, two people were arrested in connection with the alleged derailment bid of the Naini Jan Shatabdi Express by placing six-metre-long iron pole on track between the Bilaspur Road and Rudrapur City railway stations on September 18 in Rampur, police said.

The driver of the Naini Jan Shatabdi Express averted a possible accident when he applied the emergency brakes on seeing the iron pole across the tracks near Uttarakhand's Rudrapur, officials said, adding it could be sabotage.

On September 22, a goods train driver spotted an empty LPG cylinder on the tracks, and applied emergency brakes to stop the train near the Prempur station in Kanpur, the second such incident in Uttar Pradesh this month.

On September 8, an attempt was made to derail the Kalindi Express, heading towards Bhiwani from Prayagraj, by placing an LPG cylinder on the tracks. The train hit the cylinder before coming to a screeching halt.

On August 17, the Sabarmati Express derailed between the Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh, a Railway Board official had said.

FIR Against Siddaramaiah In Land Scam Case After Court Orders Probe

Lokayukta police on Friday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and others in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case, following the court order.

Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge, meanwhile, came to Siddaramaiah's defence, stating that the party is standing with him and will support him.

Siddaramaiah, who began his three-day visit to his home district of Mysuru, claimed that he was being targeted in the MUDA issue as the opposition is "scared" of him and said it's the first such "political case" against him.

He also reiterated that he won't resign following the court ordering a probe against him in the case as he has done no wrong and asserted that he would fight the case legally.

While Siddaramaiah is accused number one (A1) in the case, his wife B M Parvathi (A2), brother-in-law Mallikarjuna Swamy (A3), Devaraju (A4) -- from whom Mallikarjuna Swamy purchased land and gifted it to Parvathi -- and others are named in the FIR registered by Lokayukta police in Mysuru.

A Special Court in Bengaluru on Wednesday ordered a Lokayukta police probe against Siddaramaiah in the case, setting the stage for filing an FIR against him.

The order of the Special Court Judge, Santhosh Gajanan Bhat, came a day after the High Court upheld the sanction granted by the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to conduct an investigation against Siddaramaiah on the allegations of illegalities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife by the MUDA.

The Special Court exclusively to deal with criminal cases related to former and elected MPs/MLAs issued the order directing the Lokayukta police in Mysuru to initiate an investigation on the complaint filed by RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna.

"Acting under Sec.156(3) of Code of Criminal Procedure, the jurisdictional police i.e., Superintendent of Police, Karnataka Lokayukta, Mysuru is hereby directed to register the case, investigate and to file a report as contemplated under Sec.173 of Cr.P.C., within a period 3 months from today.." the court had said.

Accordingly, the FIR has been registered Sec.120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy), 166 (Public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person), 403 (Dishonest misappropriation of property), 406 ( Punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 ( Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 426 ( Punishment for mischief), 465 (Punishment for forgery) , 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 340 (Wrongful confinement), 351 (Assault) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The court had also listed offences punishable under sections 9 and 13 the Prevention Of Corruption Act, 1988 and under Sec.3, 53 and 54 of the Prohibition Of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988 and 3, 4 of Karnataka Land Grabbing Prohibition Act, 2011.

Snehamayi Krishna, expressing displeasure over "delay" on the part of Lokayukta SP, Mysuru, Udesha T J, in filing of the FIR, said this is another victory for his fight.

He said he will be approaching the High Court seeking handing over the case to the CBI. "At the initial stage during the filing of FIR itself there is a delay...can it be believed that there will be an honest probe against the Chief Minister? No. So we will fight to get this case handed over to the CBI." Siddaramaiah arrived in Mysuru on a three-day visit to a rousing welcome by party workers and supporters in a show of strength and support. The opposition BJP staged a protest demanding his resignation; many of the saffron party workers were whisked away by the police as they tried to march towards the venue of the meeting that the CM was attending.

Regarding BJP holding protests demanding his resignation, the CM said, "Why should I resign? If one has committed wrong he has to resign, when we are saying that no wrong was done, where is the question of resigning?"

Mr Kharge too rejected BJP's demand for Siddaramaiah's resignation, as he noted that "neither a chargesheet is filed, nor he is convicted," and said, "let the law take its own course, and when a situation comes, the party will examine."

"Now nothing is there, (but) every day I'm seeing that MUDA, MUDA. Crores of rupees (have been) swallowed by industrialists, Rs 16 lakh crore of their debt have been written off, and now you are taking one small issue and fighting. That too neither chargesheet is filed, nor he is convicted. Every day this is news. I'm fed up seeing all these things," said Mr Kharge.

In the MUDA site allotment case, it is alleged that compensatory sites were allotted to Siddaramaiah's wife in an upmarket area in Mysuru, which had higher property value as compared to the location of her land which had been "acquired" by MUDA.

Delhi Lt Governor Overturns Deferring Of Standing Committee Seat Election

In a last minute intervention, Delhi LG VK Saxena overturned the postponement of elections for the last vacant seat of the standing committee and directed the MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar to submit a report by 10 pm Thursday.

Mr Saxena directed that the deputy mayor be made the presiding officer for the elections if the mayor refuses to hold the elections.

In case the deputy mayor also refuses, the senior-most member of the House will preside over the elections, he ordered.

Earlier in the day, following disruption over frisking of councillors, the election to MCD Standing Committee was postponed by the Mayor, who adjourned the meeting of the House till October 5.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi claimed it was for the the first time a security check of the councillors had happened, and called it undemocratic and insulting for the members of the House.

The LG order read, "The Commissioner is hereby directed to submit a report of conduct of elections of the sixth member of standing committee by 10 pm today ie on 26.09.2024 positively.

"In case the Mayor is unavailable or refuses to preside over the meeting. the Deputy Mayor may be requested to preside over the meeting for conduct of elections.

Over 56% Voter Turnout In Second Phase Of Jammu And Kashmir Assembly Polls

The second phase of polling in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections saw a voter turnout of over 56 per cent on Wednesday, with the democratic exercise passing off peacefully amid tight security.

While there was significant participation in key constituencies in 26 seats spread over six districts with long queues of voters at polling stations since early morning, 20 of these segments recorded a marginally lower turnout than in the 2014 assembly elections, when the overall voting was 60 per cent.

The first phase of polling, held on September 18, saw an estimated 61.38 per cent voter turnout, while the final phase is set to take place on October 1 in the crucial elections being held after 10 years.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer P.K. Pole announced a preliminary turnout figure of 56.05 per cent, stating that it might change as polling continued in some areas, including Hazratbal and Reasi.

He emphasised that the election proceeded smoothly, with only minor incidents reported.

"There were some stray incidents, but there is no need for re-polling anywhere," Pole stated during a press conference after polls closed at 6 PM.

The highest turnout was recorded in the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi constituency, with 79.95 per cent of registered voters exercising their franchise. Other notable turnout figures included Kangan (71.89 per cent), Gulabgarh (73.49 per cent), and Surankote (75.11 per cent).

The Election Commission had set up 3,502 polling stations across the region, including 1,056 urban and 2,446 rural stations, with a robust security presence to ensure a safe voting environment.

Over 15,000 personnel, including local police and central paramilitary forces, were deployed to maintain order at the polling sites.

This phase saw a delegation of 16 foreign diplomats, including representatives from the US, Norway, and Singapore, visiting the valley to observe the electoral process.

This marked the first instance of international observers being allowed to witness elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the onset of militancy in the region.

The delegation visited multiple polling stations and expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections. US Deputy Chief of Mission Jorgan K. Andrews described the voting as "healthy and democratic," noting the enthusiasm of voters after a decade-long pause in the electoral process.

"It is great to see the enthusiasm; it's great to see Kashmiris out (and) voting after a pause for 10 years. We are very excited to see the results. It looks very healthy and very democratic," Andrews told PTI Videos at a polling station here.

The US diplomat said the process here was similar to how it happens in his country.

The Ministry of External Affairs had invited diplomats from 16 countries to observe the exercise.

"They (diplomats) expressed overall satisfaction. Our officers explained to them about the overall process including arrangement," Pole said.

However, the decision to invite foreign diplomats drew criticism from former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who questioned the necessity of foreign oversight in what he termed an internal matter.

Abdullah remarked, "When foreign governments comment, the Government of India says, 'this is an internal matter for India,' and now suddenly they want foreign observers to come and look at our elections." He criticised the government for what he perceived as a "guided tour" approach and called for consistency in policy regarding foreign involvement in domestic affairs.

Members of the visiting delegation appreciated the electoral process, with some diplomats expressing admiration for initiatives like the all-female managed "Pink polling stations." The delegation also interacted with local voters, who highlighted concerns about issues such as erratic electricity supply and rising bills.

"Electricity tariff meters have been installed. Now they say water consumption will also be metered," a woman in her late 60s told a diplomat while waiting for her turn to vote at a polling station in the heart of Srinagar city.

While the woman refused to identify herself, she said she spoke her heart out hoping that there would be some relief for the poor people and that the "angrez" (foreigner) would take up the matter with the Centre.

South Korea diplomat Sang Woo Lim liked the idea of Pink polling station, an initiative of the Election Commission where polling stations are managed by all-female staff.

Singapore deputy head of the mission in Delhi Cheng Wei Wei Alice said it was wonderful to be part of the delegation observing the polls here. Alice said the delegates were "very thankful to the MEA for organising this trip and allowing us to visit the polling stations".

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir continue to attract attention both domestically and internationally, as the region navigates its complex political landscape.

In Srinagar district, 93 candidates are vying for votes, followed by 46 in Budgam, 34 in Rajouri, 25 in Poonch, 21 in Ganderbal, and 20 in Reasi.

Prominent faces in this electoral battle include former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from the Ganderbal and Budgam constituencies. Tariq Hamid Karra, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), is running for the Central Shalteng seat.

Ravinder Raina, the chief of BJP's J-K unit, aims to retain his Nowshera seat in Rajouri.

Other notable candidates include jailed separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay, also known as Barkati, contesting from Ganderbal and Beerwah, and Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari, who is contesting in Channapora.

Former ministers such as Ali Mohammad Sagar (Khanyar), Abdul Rahim Rather (Chrar-i-Sharief), Choudhary Zulfikar Ali (Budhal), and Syed Mushtaq Bukhari (Surankote) are also in the running, with Ali and Bukhari standing on BJP tickets this time around.

The counting of votes is on October 8.

Army, Forest Team Captures 2 Leopards After 3 Killed In Attacks In Udaipur

The forest department in Udaipur district, with the help of the Army, has captured two leopards, bringing a sigh of relief to residents of Gogunda town where three people were killed in attacks by the big cats last week, officials said on Tuesday.

The leopards were captured in separate cages on Monday night, they added.

The traps were set following a wave of panic in the community after the rise in deaths due to leopard attacks.

In response to the fatalities, which included a 16-year-old girl, a 50-year-old man, and a 40-year-old woman, the forest department launched a search operation with local police, according to officials.

A team from the Indian Army was also called in on Saturday to trace the animals. Cages were strategically placed at six locations in the area, they said.

Gogunda police station SHO Shaitan Singh Nathawat said the leopards were rescued and transported to Sajjangarh Biological Park in Udaipur city by the forest department team.

Nathawat said prima facie, one of the two big cats, the older one who is lacking teeth, might have been responsible for the recent fatal attacks on humans.

"The animal's inability to hunt its natural prey due to broken or lack of canines likely drove it to attack humans, making it easier for the leopard to seek alternative sources of food. However, the forest officials are examining the matter in detail," he said.

The search operation commenced on Wednesday, and the Army utilised drones for surveillance starting Saturday, the officials said.

Camera traps were also used to capture the leopards' movements, they added.

Karnataka High Court Tightens Rules On Live-Streaming Of Proceedings

The Karnataka High Court has introduced strict guidelines for live-streaming of judicial proceedings to prevent unauthorised sharing of clips on social media platforms.

The incident stems from remarks made by a single judge recently. These comments, made during a live-streamed hearing, sparked widespread criticism after video clips went viral.

To address this, the High Court has issued a note titled, "Prohibitions and Restrictions on Usage of the Recording or Live Stream," which is now displayed at the beginning of live-streamed sessions.

The note prohibits any unauthorised recording, sharing, or dissemination of live-streamed proceedings and archival data, including on social media and messaging platforms. Only authorised individuals or entities are permitted to handle such recordings.

The court also warned that anyone found violating these rules would face legal consequences under the Indian Copyright Act, 1957, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and contempt of court laws.

Further, the note underscores the court's exclusive copyright over its recordings and mandates that the use of authorised recordings-allowed for news, educational, and training purposes-must not be edited or repurposed for commercial use.

Rule 10(2) of the Karnataka Rules on Live Streaming and Recording of Court Proceedings, 2021, reinforces these restrictions by barring the use of recording devices by unauthorized individuals during hearings.

The changes come after Justice V Srishananda's remarks, which led to public backlash, prompting the judge to express regret.

Following media reports, the Supreme Court has taken note of the issue and asked the High Court Registrar General to file a detailed report on the matter.

The Advocates' Association of Bengaluru has also called for a temporary halt on live-streaming and urged judges to exercise greater sensitivity during proceedings.

They raised concerns that certain YouTube channels had exaggerated the judge's comments, attaching misleading titles to the content.

"You Are India's Brand Ambassadors": PM Modi Thanks Indians Settled In US

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed tens of thousands of Indian-Americans in a grand community event at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. The chants of "Modi, Modi" filled the stadium as the prime minister walked on stage to address people of Indian origin.

The Prime Minister started his speech with the chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai!". He began by saying that even the 'Namaste' has gone from being local to global, and credited the Indians settled overseas for it.

A series of cultural performances entertained the people gathered at the stadium, who were enthused as they waited for the Prime Minister's arrival.

During his speech, Prime Minister fondly recalled his previous community events in the United States - 2014 at the Madison Square Garden, 2016 in San Jose, California, 2018 in Houston, Texas, 2023 in Washington and now in Long Island.

He credited the Indians settled in the United States. He said that they have been the bridge between the two nations and have helped strengthen the India-US relationship. He said "you all have come seven seas apart, but nothing can ever take the love of India away from your hearts and souls."

He said that people from different parts of India may have settled overseas - here in the US too and have become US citizens, but "the sentiment that brings us all together is, 'Bharat Mata ki...(Jai! chanted the spectators)'."

"This sentiment is what keeps us united, and this is our biggest strength, no matter where we go in the world," he said, adding that "It is this sentiment that helps us be peaceful, law abiding global citizens - what makes India proud of its children - and makes the world realise that India is the world's 'Vishwa-Bandhu'."

Calling the Indians settled in the United States 'Rashtradoot' (Ambassadors), the prime minister thanked the Indian community in the United States for the respect India has earned in that country, adding that "It is our Indian values and culture that makes us One."

After EY Employee Death, Deloitte Forms Panel To Review People Practices

Amid a social media storm over the death of a young employee at tax consultancy major EY allegedly due to work pressure, Deloitte has formed a three-member external committee, which includes former revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj, to look into practices, policies and processes concerning employees, its South Asia CEO Romal Shetty said on Friday.

Shetty said to manage the work pressure within the organisation and have an open work culture, Deloitte has a chief happiness officer and takes strictest action for any bad behaviour within the organisation.

Deloitte is one of the four major global tax consultancy firms. Besides Deloitte and EY, the other major firms are PwC and KPMG.

"... Very unfortunate, very tragic, young child losing her life. We are in the client service business and in the client service business there will always be deadlines... having all of those pressures," Shetty told PTI in an interview.

Anna Sebastian Perayil, who passed her CA exam in 2023 and worked at EY Pune office for four months, died in July. According to a letter her mother wrote to EY India chairman Rajiv Memani, she was overworked with a "backbreaking" load as a new employee that affected her "physically, emotionally, and mentally".

Shetty dismissed any bullying culture within organizations that have been built over 100-150 years, but did not rule out any individual transgressions.

"... Bullying culture is not normally the way professional organizations are. But are there individuals who do certain things? Yes, absolutely... So first, I think, as an organization, you need to have an open culture that nobody should be scared to bring up those issues." Shetty said Deloitte on Friday has instituted a panel of three eminent and independent people after the tragic loss of life of 26-year old Anna Sebastian Perayil at EY.

"We have instituted a panel post this.. Tarun Bajaj who used to be the Revenue Secretary, Manoj Kohli who used to be the CEO of Airtel, Subodh Jaiswal who used to be the CBI Director to relook at all our people practices, our policies, processes. How are ethics cases... We have an ethics helpline. How do they get actually managed? What are our mechanisms in place to do it?," Shetty said.

He said in today's world where the workforce is diverse, there is a need to relook at the work environment and make it suitable to manage stress. Mental health is a serious problem and dealing with it is a challenge, he said.

Shetty said, the youngsters joining the workforce today are coming from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities leaving their families and might be going through some stress in their personal lives, besides the work pressure that they encounter in a client servicing business which has a strict deadline.

"The younger generation is far smarter than I ever was, far more intelligent, far more smarter. Sometimes, I think a little bit more resilience will be useful," Shetty said.

As a CEO, Shetty said he goes to every office and conducts an open forum wherein people can ask any question.

"The concept is, if you can ask your CEO any question, including, little bit embarrassing one as well, then you can actually walk up to a senior person and say, I don't enjoy this... Can we also have an environment to ensure that people are comfortable with what they do, because sometimes you spend 14 hours in the workplace," Shetty said.

Bengal Doctors End Cease-Work, To Resume Essential Services From Saturday

The junior doctors of Bengal called off their massive 41-day protest over the rape-murder of a colleague at a Kolkata hospital and said they will join work from Saturday. But there was a caveat - they said they will not join OPD services or attend elected operations. These would be resumed once they are assured of the state government's commitment to the safety issue, they said.

The announcement came after the state had accepted most of their demands -- and amid massive floods in south Bengal where health services have become a priority.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been on a tour of the flood-hit areas since yesterday. It was the Chief Secretary who attended the last meeting with the doctors on Wednesday and accepted their demands and suggestions regarding security.

Earlier today, he wrote to the Principal Secretary, giving detailed instructions which included ensuring adequate availability of on-duty rooms, washrooms, CCTVs, deployment of police and security personnel which would include women, mobile police teams for surveillance at night, central helpline and panic buttons and alarms.

According to the complaint filed by the rape survivor's family, the accused, Shiv Kumar (50) was their tenant and took the child while she was playing and raped her.

Circle officer, Rupali Rao said that an FIR was lodged at the Nai Mandi police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 65 (2) (rape on a woman under twelve years of age and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The accused was caught by the family members and has been arrested, Mr Rao added.

What A Shame: Veep's Fresh Attack On Kapil Sibal Over "Symptomatic Malaise"

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday said there is a need to hit hard at subtle discrimination against women and urged the "male society" to change its mindset before it is too late.

He also condemned the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and said people must condemn remarks that the incident was of "symptomatic malaise".

Addressing the News 18 She Shakti Conclave 2024 in Delhi, the vice president said after the women's reservation law comes into force, more women will be part of decision-making and governance.

There will be less disturbance and disruptions (in Parliament and state legislatures), he said.

People who term women as the weaker sex are wrong, he asserted and said women empowerment will be boosted by women themselves.

Mr Dhankhar was of the view that education cuts into inequality. "Gender discrimination has vanished but has assumed certain forms. Overt discrimination can be fought but not subtle discrimination. We have to hit it hard," he asserted.

"Male society", the vice president said, has to change the mindset before it is too late.

Referring to the Kolkata case, he said "We must be firmly dismissive and contemptuous of insane thoughts of the kind that belittle barbarity of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata while in hospital on duty.

"Someone calls it a symptomatic malaise. What a shame. Our hearts should bleed," he said in an apparent reference to purported Supreme Court Bar Association resolution in which senior lawyer Kapil Sibal reportedly described the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata as a "symptomatic malaise".

'One Nation, One Election' To Come In This Tenure of Government: Sources

The idea of One Country One Election -- under discussion for long in the corridors of parliament -- will be implemented during the current tenure of the Narendra Modi government, sources have said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned this in his Independence Day speech this year and the government is committed to implementing it, sources said.

The government has already formed a committee under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind, which has submitted its report.  The panel has recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a first step, which would be followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.

It is likely that the Law Commission will also recommend it soon. The Commission is likely to recommend that all three tiers of government -- Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats -- have simultaneous polls starting 2029 and a provision for unity government in cases like hung house or no-confidence motion.

In his Independence Day address last month, PM Modi had made a strong pitch for "One nation, one election", contending that frequent polls were creating hurdles in the country's progress.

"The nation has to come forward for 'one nation, one election'," he had said.

The BJP had also promised "One Nation One Election" in its manifesto and government sources said they are hopeful that there will be consensus among all parties to implement it, sources said.

The Opposition, though, has staunchly opposed the idea sofar, red-flagging the constitutional issues.

The challenges to its implementation would involve syncing electoral cycles with minimum disruption to governance and there is no clarity dealing with the breaks that would be involved in bringing all states in the same timeline. There is also a marked lack of clarity in the way forward in cases involving dissolution of Houses, President's Rule, or even a hung Assembly or Parliament.

Regional parties have pointed out their limited resources could hamper them from highlighting local issues to voters, in the face of the din over the Lok Sabha election.

Another area of concern is the recurring cost of procuring EVMS, or electronic voting machines. This, the poll panel has said, will be nearly Rs 10,000 crore every 15 years.

Amazon, Flipkart Violated Competition Laws, Says Anti-Trust Body: Report

Samsung, Xiaomi and other smartphone companies colluded with Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart to exclusively launch products on the e-commerce firms' Indian websites in breach of antitrust laws, according to regulatory reports seen by Reuters.

Antitrust investigations conducted by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) have found that Amazon and Flipkart violated local competition laws by giving preference to select sellers, prioritising certain listings, and steeply discounting products, hurting other companies, Reuters reported this week.

The CCI's 1,027-page report on Amazon also said the Indian units of five companies - Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Realme and OnePlus - were "involved in the practice of exclusive" phone launches in "collusion" with Amazon and its affiliates, breaking competition law.

In Flipkart's case, a 1,696-page CCI report said the Indian units of Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Vivo, Lenovo and Realme conducted similar practices.

The inclusion of smartphone makers like Samsung and Xiaomi in the case could increase their legal and compliance headaches.

"Exclusivity in business is anathema. Not only is it against free and fair competition but also against the interest of consumers," CCI's additional director general GV Siva Prasad wrote in the Amazon and Flipkart reports, in identical findings.

Reuters is first to report the smartphone companies have been accused of anticompetitive behavior in the CCI's reports which are dated August 9 and are not public.

Xiaomi declined to comment, while the other smartphone makers did not respond to requests for comment.

Amazon, Flipkart and the CCI did not respond, and have not so far commented on the reports' findings.

Both the CCI reports said that during investigations Amazon and Flipkart "deliberately downplayed" allegations of exclusive launches, but officials found the practice was "rampant".

Counterpoint Research data shows that South Korea's Samsung and China's Xiaomi are two of India's biggest smartphone players, together holding an almost 36% market share, with China's Vivo on 19%.

India's e-retail market is set to exceed $160 billion by 2028, up from $57-60 billion in 2023, consultancy firm Bain estimates.

The investigation findings are a major setback for Amazon and Flipkart in a key growth market where they have faced the ire of small retailers for years for hurting their offline businesses.

The CCI has also said both companies used their foreign investments to provide subsidised rates for services like warehousing and marketing to a select number of sellers.

ONLINE SALES BOOM

Some of the smartphone companies - Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, Realme and Motorola - have been ordered to submit their financial statements for three fiscal years to 2024, certified by their auditor, to the CCI, according to an internal CCI document dated Aug. 28, also seen by Reuters.

The investigation into Amazon, Flipkart and their sellers was triggered in 2020 by a complaint from an affiliate of India's biggest retailer association, the Confederation of All India Traders, which has 80 million members.

The CCI will in coming weeks review any objections to its findings from Amazon, Flipkart, the retailer association, and the smartphone companies, and could potentially impose fines along with mandating companies to change their business practices, people familiar with the matter said.

Indian retailers have repeatedly accused Amazon and Flipkart, and smartphone companies, of exclusive phone launches online, saying shopkeepers suffered as they didn't get the latest models and customers looked for them on the shopping websites.

"Exclusive launches had not only severely affected the ordinary sellers on the platform but also the brick-and-mortar retailers who were provided mobile phones at a much later date," both CCI reports said, citing analyses of data from smartphone companies.

Research firm Datum Intelligence estimates that 50% of phone sales were online last year, up from 14.5% in 2013. Flipkart had a 55% share in online phone sales in 2023, and Amazon 35%.

"Terrorism Is On Its Last Leg": PM Modi In J&K Ahead Of Assembly Polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing his first poll rally in J&K ahead of the coming elections, on Saturday cited his government's efforts to bring peace and development to the troubled region as he lashed out against the "most corrupt" Congress and the other dynastic parties like the NC and the PDP, who had "sinned" against the people by depriving them of their rights and allowed terrorism to flourish.

In his address at the rally in Doda district, the PM said, "The Congress is the most dishonest and misleading political party in the country. And its 'Royal Family' (the Gandhis) is the most corrupt political family of the country."

"The petty politics and mean thinking of the Congress leaders became clear during the Congress President's (Mallikarjun Kharge) visit to J&K recently. He said if their party had 20 more seats in the Lok Sabha, they would put BJP leaders, including Modi, in jail... 2014, 2019, and 2024. After 60 years, the country's people have three times given us an opportunity to serve them. We run the government to crush corruption... for the welfare of the common man... Whenever there is no positive approach, then they have no agenda but to put people in jail. They should have talked about J&K's welfare but only talked about sending people to jail," he said.

PM Modi commended the gathering's high level of 'josh' (enthusiasm).

"I am seeing that our sisters and daughters have come in such large numbers to bless us. I am highly grateful to you. Your love and blessing will be returned threefold by me by working harder for the country. We together will make a safe and prosperous J&K. This is Modi's guarantee," he said.

Attacking the dynastic parties, he said: "The political parties you trusted did not care for your children. They did everything for their own children. These people never allowed new leadership to emerge. You know that after 2000, there were no Panchayat elections. No DDC polls were held. These dynastic families never allowed talented youth to come forward."

"In 2014 after coming to power, I tried to empower the local youth. Panchayat and urban bodies elections were held so that democracy reached the grassroots level and youth came forward. After local bodies elections, 30-35,000 youth came forward and took the reins of power into their own hands. The development that took place here during the last 20 years, owes itself to these youth. Today I salute the Josh of youth, whether a male or a female."

PM Modi termed the elections a fight between three families - the Congress, the NC, and the PDP - and the young generation of J&K who have come forward with dreams of a better future.

"In J&K, these three families have done a sin against the people. These families encouraged and patronised land encroachers and people had to beg even for routine facilities. Only those who were close to these three families were employed in government service. This created the ground for separation and violence and was taken advantage of by the enemies of the country."

"This region (Chenab Valley) is a witness to the worst period of violence. Even before sunset, undeclared curfew would begin. All businesses and life activities would shut down."

"Today terrorism is on its last legs. Stones thrown at police are now used to build the 'Naya Kashmir'. Who has done all this? Not Modi alone, but all this has been achieved by the people of Doda and other places."

The Prime Minister said that they had promised to remember Tikka Lal Taploo who was killed by terrorists on this day three decades before, and terror let loose on the Kashmiri Pandit community in its wake.

"I felicitate the J&K BJP for promising the Tikka Lal Taploo scheme to give Kashmiri Pandits their rights."

"Our daughter, (BJP's Doda candidate) Shagun Parihar's father and uncle were killed by terrorists. We have fielded her here. She is not just our candidate, but she is the living example of the BJP's resolve to finish terrorism," PM Modi asserted.

He said the parties, who ruled for J&K for decades, never bothered about the future of people's children.

"Modi is worried about you and the future of your children. All children should get an education and move forward. We opened new schools and colleges here. We opened a medical college in Doda."

"In our manifesto, we have announced the Pandit Prem Nath Dogra employment scheme. We will make this region a heaven for tourists. I am told that film shooting in Doda did not take place after terrorism. We promise to change this so that film units not only from the country, but also from abroad, come here. We have announced a new film policy. J&K will dominate films in India and the rest of the world," the PM said.

On the key demand, PM Modi said that his BJP will give statehood to J&K, "but be careful of those, who for their benefit, deprived you of your rights".

"They now keep a copy of the Constitution in their pocket without any respect for it. They have injured the soul of Babasaheb (Ambedkar)... otherwise there would not have been two Constitutions in one country. They did not give their rights to Paharis nor did they even speak about SC, OBC reservations."

"Under the garb of Article 370 and 35A, our daughters were deprived of their rights. The election manifestos of the NC and the PDP say they will get Article 370 back. What does it mean? They will deprive Paharis, STs, SCs and OBCs of reservations, first-timers of their voting rights, and also deprive women of their rights to ancestral lands. There would again be stone pelting, hartals..." he warned.

Amid his address, the PM walked over to the BJP candidates sitting on the dais and appealed to people to vote for them.

The PM will again visit J&K on September 19 to address a rally in Srinagar and another in Katra town of Jammu division.

J&K goes to vote on September 18, September 25, and October 1. Counting will take place on October 8.

After Madhya Pradesh Horror, A Relook At Over 45 Alleged Gang-Rape Cases

In the wake of a recent robbery and alleged gang-rape at Jam Gate, a popular tourist spot near Indore, disturbing details from a similar case at Kajligarh Fort have emerged. Nine years ago, over 45 women were allegedly gang-raped at Kajligarh Fort during a period of two years.

Although the Jam Gate incident has raised concerns, Indore Rural Superintendent of Police Hitika Vasal has said the two incidents are not connected.

A public interest petition (PIL) was filed in the Indore bench of the high court on the Kajligarh gang-rape cases. However, many are questioning why the government dismissed the police reports on such a serious matter.

The main accused in the Kajligarh cases had admitted to the crime, but no substantial action was taken. Similar to the Jam Gate incident, the survivors from the Kajligarh cases have refused to file police cases, raising further concerns about the handling of these cases.

In 2015, a group of BTech students visiting Kajligarh Fort were assaulted by members of a gang, which led to a police complaint being filed at Simrol. Despite an investigation, the accused escaped. However, soon after, the police discovered that some young men were spending large amount of money and flaunting expensive mobile phones. When detained and questioned, the police uncovered shocking links to multiple crimes.

After interrogation, the gang members including key suspects Sanjay Katara and Karan Dawar were arrested, while a minor was detained.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The gang's leader later revealed the gang's involvement in at least 45 gang-rape cases over two years. They admitted the gang looted couples at the deserted Kajligarh Fort to fuel their drug habits.

The police reached out to some of the survivors, but they refused to file complaints, possibly due to fear or trauma. A petition was filed in the Indore bench of the high court, demanding action against officials responsible for not following up the cases. But no conclusive measures have been taken yet.

The Jam Gate Incident

In a chillingly similar manner, a robbery and alleged gang-rape took place at Jam Gate, another scenic location near Indore, on Tuesday night. Two trainee army officers and their female friend were attacked by armed miscreants, who came with the intent of looting.

Though the army officers were severely beaten up, they have given statements to the police. The woman who alleged gang-rape remains too shocked to give a statement. The key suspect in this case has been arrested and investigation is on to uncover more details, the police said.

"We have tried several times to record the woman's statement, but she is not yet ready. It is difficult to proceed until her statement is recorded," Superintendent of Police Hitika Vasal said.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the Jam Gate incident, all of whom have a history of serious criminal activity. They are: Anil Baror, 27, the mastermind behind the crime, with previous charges of extortion, robbery, and family disputes; Pawan Bansuniya, 23, accused of smuggling banned liquor and robbery; Ritesh Bhabhar, 25, a mastermind with serious charges, including murder; Rohit Girwal, Sandeep Waria, and Sachin Makwana, all three with criminal history.

On the Kajligarh Fort gang-rape cases, former Indore West Superintendent of Police and Indian Police Service (IPS) officer D Kalyan Chakraborty shed light on the investigation process. They said while arrests were made and a first information report (FIR) was filed under sections on rape, the case was marred by the reluctance of the survivors to come forward.

Mr Chakraborty said while he couldn't provide detailed information without reviewing the records, he recalled that the case had indeed come to his attention during his tenure. The police had arrested several accused, and one-two key suspects had been taken into custody. Some of the accused had confessed to the crime, but a significant obstacle in the investigation was the absence of complaints from the survivors themselves.

"The accused were arrested, and an FIR was filed under the sections of rape. However, the major challenge was that no survivor was willing to file complaints. We had to rely on information and leads during the investigation," Mr Chakraborty said.

He said despite the lack of direct complaints, two-three survivors eventually came forward, which enabled the police to file the FIR. Following this, a thorough investigation was conducted, leading to the identification and prosecution of the accused.

"The investigation was done based on the information we had, and two-three survivors did step forward... The accused were found guilty, arrested, and a chargesheet was filed in the case," he said.

4 Of Family Murdered In Chhattisgarh Over Black Magic Suspicion: Cops

Dairy Agreement Next Flashpoint Between Congress, BJP In Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh government has signed a five-year agreement with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to manage and run the state's cooperative dairy federation and its associated milk unions. The move has sparked a political row, with the Congress drawing a parallel with the Amul-Nandini milk controversy from Karnataka's assembly elections.

The Opposition alleges that this agreement is an attempt to hand over Madhya Pradesh's popular Sanchi milk brand to Gujarat's Amul, a claim the government strongly denies, terming it a baseless dispute aimed at confusing the public.

Milk Production in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh currently produces around 5.51 crore liters of milk daily, contributing 9-10 per cent of the country's total milk production.

The state has a significant livestock population, with 2.19 crore cattle making up 9 per cent of India's total. Of this, 51 per cent are indigenous cows, 42 per cent are buffaloes, and 7 per cent are crossbred cows. Milk availability per person in Madhya Pradesh stands at 644 grams per day, well above the national average of 459 grams.

The government plans to double the state's milk production in the next five years, a goal for which NDDB will prepare the blueprint.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has defended the decision, saying it is aimed at boosting the income of farmers and cattle rearers and making the state a leader in milk production.

He emphasized that if required, amendments will be made to the Cooperative Act to support this initiative.

Congress's Vivek Tankha, however, accused the government of backdoor dealings, comparing the situation to the Nandini-Amul controversy of Karnataka.

He claimed Amul is trying to take over Sanchi, a trusted household name in Madhya Pradesh, and vowed that the party would fight this issue in Parliament, the assembly, and even courts if necessary.

Responding to the allegations, Animal Husbandry Minister Lakhan Patel said the Congress is spreading misinformation.

He highlighted that the agreement with NDDB is intended to strengthen Sanchi's operations, expand its marketing, and explore new opportunities.

Despite the political debate, the NDDB's successful management in other states cannot be ignored. The organization has increased milk production capacities across India:

  • * Jharkhand Milk Federation: From 11 TKgPD to 200 TKgPD
  • * Paschim Assam Milk Union: From 4 TKgPD to 53 TKgPD
  • * Varanasi Milk Union: From 4 TKgPD to 80 TKgPD
  • * Vidarbha-Marathwada Dairy Project: 450 TKgPD.

The NDDB has also revived the struggling Mahananda Dairy in Maharashtra and took over the responsibility of milk supply to the army from Ladakh Milk Union.

Moreover, it has formed a joint venture with the Assam government to produce 10 lakh liters of milk per day.

Dairy Sector in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has a strong livestock contribution to its economy, accounting for 7.5% of the state's Gross State Value Added (GSVA), compared to the national average of 5.5 per cent.

Yet, only 2 per cent of the state's milk is currently collected through cooperatives, far below the national average of 10 per cent.

Over the last five years, milk marketing has declined in major unions, particularly in Gwalior and Jabalpur.

The state government believes that once the milk collection, marketing, and economic conditions of these unions improve, management will return to state control.

For now, the agreement with NDDB will focus on the overall development of the dairy sector in Madhya Pradesh.

The agreement aims to expand dairy cooperatives and provide support to farmers' organizations and self-help groups, improve milk quality in collection, transportation, and processing, upgrade infrastructure and ensure digitization in existing dairy plants, develop plans for marketing milk products both within India and internationally.

The government asserts that these efforts will double milk production in the state, benefiting 40,000 villages, increasing farmers' income, and enabling them to produce bio kitchens and organic fertilisers.

"Was Surprise Attack, We Forced Them To Go Back": Top CRPF Official On Manipur

A day after personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) thwarted an attack by armed gunmen on their camp in Manipur's Kangpokpi, a senior CRPF officer said there was "rapid and random" firing on the roof of the camp and a befitting reply was given to the attackers.

CRPF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manish Kumar Sachar said the attack was a surprise for them, but those involved in the attack were pushed back and the situation was taken under control.

"There is an abandoned village about three km from here, and a counted few people stayed there. Suddenly, they (armed gunmen) came (from the northern side) and this was a surprise for us. There were random and rapid fire on the roof of the company and our boys responded swiftly and forced them to go back," Mr Sachar said.

"While running back, these people burnt two houses in the periphery of the village. They also used bombs. Our boys showed tremendous alertness and forced them to go back. The situation is fully in our control... They (survivors) are very safe with us," he said.

He said the incident happened at 7.30 pm and it was "a planned attack".

BJP Releases 6th List Of J&K Polls, Drops Ex-Deputy Chief Minister

The BJP on Sunday released a fresh list of 10 candidates for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, replacing ex-deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta with former member of legislative council (MLC) Vikram Randhawa from Bahu seat of Jammu district.

Mr Gupta was elected from Gandhi Nagar, renamed as the Bahu assembly segment, in the 2014 elections.

With the release of the sixth list for the third phase of elections, the BJP has so far named 62 candidates, including 20 for the Kashmir Valley, where the BJP is yet to open its account in assembly elections.

Mr Randhawa found himself embroiled in controversies on three occasions between 2019 and 2021, leading to filing of two FIRs against him at separate police stations in Ladakh and Jammu and also forcing him to tender an unconditional public apology to Union minister Jitendra Singh for levelling baseless allegations of corruption against him.

The BJP's fresh list of candidates also included former MLA RS Pathania who was fielded from Udhampur East and former bureaucrat Bharat Bhushan from Kathua, doctor-turned politician Rajeev Bhagat from Bishnah and Surinder Bhagat from Marh – the three seats reserved for Scheduled Caste community.

Both Kathua and Marh had been won by BJP's Rajiv Jasrotia and Sukh Nandan Kumar in 2014 assembly elections.

Mr Bhushan, posted as director, social welfare, Jammu, took voluntary retirement on September 7.

In Kashmir valley, the BJP fielded Mohd Idrees Karnahi from Karnah, Ghulam Mohammad Mir (Handwara), Abdul Rashid Khan (Sonawari), Naseer Ahmad Lone (Bandipora) and Faqir Mohammad Khan (Gurez-Scheduled Tribe reserved seat).

In May 2019, an FIR was registered against Mr Randhawa, the then BJP's Ladakh in-charge, for allegedly trying to bribe journalists in Leh. Two years later, he had to submit an unconditional public apology to party colleague and Union minister for levelling false allegations of corruption against him, a day before hearing of a defamation suit filed by Singh against him in a Delhi court.

In November 2021, the J&K BJP unit removed Randhawa from the post of secretary over his derogatory remarks against Kashmiri Muslims.

The Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, having 90 assembly constituencies, will go to polls in three phases on September 18, 25 and October 1.

Gangster Serving Life Sentence In Uttarakhand Jail Initiated Into Monkhood

An underworld don serving life sentence in the Almora district jail was offered 'diksha' by seers in the prison premises recently to initiate him into monkhood, claimed a man who mediated between the don and the seers.

Don Prakash Pandey, also called PP, has a number of criminal cases pending against him including those of extortion, robbery and murder.

Two seers accompanied by the man who mediated between the gangster and the seer community reportedly went inside the jail premises on September 5 to perform the 'diksha' ceremony during which Pandey was offered a rudraksha garland and a sacred beads necklace (kanthi) to wear. Vedic mantras were also chanted in his ears.

The don was renamed as Prakashanand Giri by the seers who introduced themselves as being associated with the Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara, which is headquartered in Haridwar and has its ashrams in the Kumaon region.

After coming out of the jail complex, the seers and mediator Krishna Kandpal held a press conference at a hotel in Almora and said it was done as the man was "full of patriotic feelings" and wanted to move towards a "religious and pure life".

"When I met PP bhai, I was impressed by his patriotic spirit. He had entered Pakistan once to kill Dawood (Ibrahim). He had even entered Vietnam to kill someone else but was arrested as there was a red-corner notice issued against him. He expressed his desire to tread the spiritual path. I talked to the seers and they agreed to offer him diksha," Kandpal told reporters.

"It was a subtle diskha programme. A larger and more elaborate one will be done at Prayagraj Kumbh in 2025," he said.

The life of Prakashanand Giri could inspire others behind the bars to embrace the life of spiritualism and purity, a seer named Rajender Giri said.

Nainital MP Ajay Bhatt shied away from commenting on the incident saying he was not aware of it.

"I have no knowledge of the incident. I also do not want to comment anything on saints," he said.

When asked how authorities allowed the ceremony to be carried out in the jail premises, the former Union minister said he could comment on it only after reading the jail manual.

Meanwhile, the Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara said it would set up a seven-member committee to probe the incident.

The akhara's international convener Hari Giri denied reports that the don has been made Mahamandaleshwar of the Akhara. However, he said everyone has the right to embrace sanatan. "Even if a man with criminal antecedents seeks the shelter of sanatan, he cannot be left alone," Giri said.

The seven-member panel of the akhara consisting of its former and present members will find out if money or any kind of favour was taken to offer the 'diksha'. "If found guilty, they might even be expelled from the akhara," Mahant Hari Giri said. he said.

Shinzo Abe was assassinated in Nara on July 8, 2022, during an election campaign address on the street. He was taken to the hospital, where Abe was pronounced dead.

Girl Students To Get Saffron-Coloured Bicyles, Says Rajasthan Minister

In a decision that may generate controversy, the Rajasthan government has decided that the colour of bicycles to be given to girl students in Class IX in the government schools will be saffron.

The saffron colour is associated with the right-wing BJP which is governing Rajasthan.

Black coloured bicycles were provided to the girl students during the previous Congress government. However, with the BJP coming into power in December last year, tenders have now been issued for orange-coloured bicycles.

Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar on Tuesday said the colour of bicycles to be given to the girl students of the government schools will be saffron. The initiative aims to support girls in government schools by facilitating their access to education through the provision of free bicycles, he said.

The saffron colour represents energy, bravery and positivity, he said, and also noted that this was the colour used for bicycles during the previous BJP government but the former Congress government changed it to black.

"We are again changing the colour of the bicycle to saffron. Saffron colour symbolises valour and bravery. When our country got Independence, freedom fighters wore the saffron colour, symbolising valour," Dilawar told reporters.

The minister said the saffron colour is also synonymous with sunrise.

As BJPs Membership Drive Starts, PM's Old Pic Of Blood Donation Surfaces

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kick-started the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) massive membership drive on Monday by enrolling himself as the party's first member.

Amid BJP's massive membership drive, an old and undated picture of PM Modi shared by 'Modi Archive' has become the talking point on social media, eliciting people's interest and also evoking reactions on how he has always led from the front.

'Modi Archive', a popular social media handle on X, claims to narrate the journey of PM Modi through archival pictures, videos and newspaper clips.

On Monday, it shared the picture of a young Narendra Modi participating in a blood donation drive.

Captaining the picture, it wrote, "BJP worker Narendra Modi rolling up his sleeves for a blood donation drive organised by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha."

"Leading by example, since day one," it added.

Meanwhile, the 'Sangathan Parv' held at BJP headquarters to launch the membership drive was attended by the top party brass on Monday, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and many other BJP ministers, leaders and party functionaries.

Addressing the event, PM Modi said that the BJP is the only party that is expanding its work by strictly following the democratic process and is continuously working towards making itself capable of realising people's hopes and aspirations.

"This membership drive is not just a ritual, it's an extension of our family. It is an ideological and emotional movement," the Prime Minister said.

Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief J.P. Nadda expressed confidence that the party will cross the 10 crore milestone in terms of numbers, a feat it achieved back in 2014.

Earlier in the day, the BJP also unveiled a phone number - 8800002024. A missed call on this number would enable the leaders, workers and volunteers to become a party member.

The NaMo App is another route via which leaders and workers can attain party membership and renew their association with the BJP.

What Sudha Murthy Said On Writing A Story Set In Parliament

Parliamentarian and author-philanthropist Sudha Murthy on Sunday said although she has read a book set in Parliament way back in the 1980s, about Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, since so much has changed about India and the Parliament since then, that she would not mind writing about it.

"Although, I have to finish my term as a Rajya Sabha member first, before I could attempt to do that," said Murthy on Sunday.

Ms Murthy was in conversation with fellow author and actor Twinkle Khanna, at the celebration of the launch of her 300th book title - and 46th book - 'Grandpa's Bag of Stories' here. The event was organised by Bengaluru-based Lit Spirit Foundation.

But in her immediate list of wishes is a book on 'shlokas' that her grandfather used to recite, she said.

"Like the one my grandfather used to recite when someone went travelling or stepped out of the house," said Ms Murthy.

Ms Murthy also said it is not likely that she will not set her stories in the United Kingdom, even though it is the place of her grandchildren.

"There are characters in my book that are very much my grandchildren, but they are based in India...In the UK, I have been at any point of time just for 10 to 15 days. To set a story in some place, you need to know the place well, you need to interact with the people. Then only you will get a glimpse of the culture and can write comfortably about it," she said.

Ms Khanna and Ms Murthy also discussed their respective approaches to writing as well as what they do to stay relevant as well as the meticulous research that goes into writing a book.

Talking about her process, Ms Murthy said, she sits down to write only after she had framed the 'entire story' in her mind.

"I take only 10 to 15 days to write, not more than that. But I'll think about the story for more than a year even," said Ms Murthy.

Ms Khanna said she struggled a bit in the beginning to juggle being a mother and writing, but eventually found her pace and reserved her mornings for writing.

"Writing is about discipline, finding the time - whatever works for you - and being very selfish about that time," she added.

Both the authors agreed that understanding what readers want is the key to being a productive writer.

Ms Khanna said as a writer, she had discovered along the way that it was extremely important to form a connection with the readers.

Ms Murthy said she regularly interacted with children, as she writes a lot of children's books.

"I try to find out what problems they are facing. I may not be able to give them solutions, but I write in such a way that makes them happy," Ms Murthy said.

Earlier in the conversation, Murthy also talked about how difficult it is to write children's books.

"When I write for adults, I can write without any filter. But when writing for children, I want to leave a positive message. I have to be careful about what I write because I also do not want to preach to them as well. The best way to go about it is to become a child yourself. This is not easy," she said.

'Grandpa's Bag of Stories' is published by Puffin Books and is the second in her series of grandparents' stories. The first one was called 'Grandma's Bag of Stories'.
