2 Guards Arrested For Assaulting Doctors, Staff At Kolkata Hospital: Cops

Two security guards were on Saturday arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and other staff at a hospital in Cossipore area of the metropolis, police said.

The guards were likely in an inebriated condition, officials said.

"The matter is being probed. We have arrested them after receiving a complaint from the hospital authorities," an officer of Cossipore Police Station said.

A senior official of the hospital claimed that the guards had also threatened him with dire consequences.

"The two guards were intoxicated and assaulted the doctors and hospital staff. They have done this earlier, too, and we had complained to the health department in this regard," he said.

The hospital currently has 11 such security guards, he said.

Jairam Thakur Alleges Snooping Of Residence By Drone, Sukhvinder Sukhu Denies

Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jai Ram Thakur, on Friday alleged in Vidhan Sabha that his official residence here was under surveillance and said a drone took four rounds and almost reached his doors and windows.

Raising a point of order during the question hour, Thakur said when he enquired about the drone, it came to his notice that the drone was being operated from the residence of the Shimla superintendent of police (SP) located nearby.

He expressed serious concern over movement of drone and raised strong objection and cautioned the officers "not to cross their limits".

Mr Thakur alleged that his telephones were being tapped and earlier also security personnel were deployed near his house in plain clothes to check "who was coming and going". This was intrusion into his privacy, he added.

Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania said he has taken cognisance of the matter and will look into it.

Refuting the allegations after the question hour, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu asserted that no surveillance was being done by drone and said he would write to the central agencies, ED and CBI to get the information whether they were doing it and get the matter investigated.

Mr Sukhu said his government did not believe in spying but was concerned about the security of the leader of opposition (LoP) and if required, security would be provided by police and not drones. In case any official was found involved in phone tapping, strict action would be taken, he added.

Dissatisfied with the reply of the chief minister, Mr Thakur said the police was involved in it and was detaining BJP MLAs in police station for eight hours. On their way back, they were being recalled from midway, he alleged, and demanded an enquiry against the concerned officials.

"Nobody Asked Him": Shiv Sena MLA After Cop Seen Washing His Car

A video showing a policeman washing Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad's car went viral on social media, with many questioning if that action was part of the cop's security duty to the ruling party legislator.

Former Congress MLA Harshwardhan Sapkal, who shared the video, said this was a classic case of misuse of the police personnel. “This is a disgrace,” he added.

Mr Gaikwad said the policeman who was on his security duty, had vomited in the vehicle after breakfast and volunteered to clean the vehicle. “Nobody asked him to clean the car,” he added.

In February, Mr Gaikwad had claimed that he had hunted a tiger in 1987 and has been wearing its tooth around his neck. Soon after, the state Forest department seized the accessory and charged him under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The purported tiger tooth was sent for forensic identification. The legislator, who belongs to the party led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had earlier posted a video on social media claiming he had hunted a big cat.

Delhi Residents Lose Nearly 12 Years Of Their Lives To Air Pollution

Delhi's persistent air pollution is reducing the life expectancy of its residents, according to the latest Air Quality Life Index 2024 report, which highlights the city's status as one of the most polluted regions in the northern plains.

According to a report by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), 1.8 crore people living in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, one of the most polluted regions in the northern plains, are on track to lose an average of 11.9 years of life expectancy compared to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) guidelines.

Even by India's own national standards, the residents stand to lose 8.5 years of life expectancy if current pollution levels persist.

Delhi, the capital and most populous city of India, also holds the dubious distinction of being the most polluted city globally, the report said.

However, the report also said if India were to meet its national PM2.5 standards, life expectancy for Delhi's residents could increase by 8.5 years and if it met the WHO standards, nearly 12 years could be added to the life expectancy of Delhi's residents.

PM2.5, a fine particulate matter that can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and trigger respiratory problems, is a significant health risk and a major contributing factor to pollution levels.

The report underscores that the annual PM2.5 standard in India is set at 40 micrograms per cubic metre, yet more than 40 per cent of the population is exposed to air that exceeds this limit.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday settled at 34 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year, the weather department said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the humidity level stood at 85 per cent at 5:30 pm.

The Met department has issued a "yellow" alert for Delhi for Thursday.

A "yellow" alert denotes bad weather and the possibility of worsening conditions that could disrupt daily life, according to the IMD's colour-coded warnings.

The IMD has predicted a cloudy sky with moderate rain for Thursday, with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 34 and 23 degrees Celsius respectively.

Between 8:30 am on August 27 and 8.30 am on August 28, Safdarjung, the city's primary weather station, recorded 9.8 mm rainfall while Lodhi Road recorded 9.3 mm, Ridge 14.5, Ayanagar 7.4 mm and Palam recorded 7.7 mm, the IMD said.

Lawyers On Strike To Hold Condolence Meet To Be Seen As Contempt: Court

The Allahabad High Court has ruled that any lawyer or lawyers' association going on a strike or giving a call for a strike or abstaining from work on account of condolence due to the death of a lawyer or officer or employee of a court or their relatives would be treated as an ex-facie act of criminal contempt.

The court, however, clarified that lawyers or their associations may call any condolence meeting only after 3:30 pm.

A division bench of Justices Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Gautam Chowdhary directed all the district judges across Uttar Pradesh to report any act of strike by lawyers in their respective courts to the registrar general of the high court, along with the names of the office-bearers of the respective bar association that gave the strike call, so that criminal contempt proceedings are instituted against them.

The court further said these directions should be circulated to all district courts and displayed on the notice boards of all courts throughout the state to ensure strict compliance.

The court issued these directions while dealing with a suo-motu criminal contempt matter, wherein cognisance was taken on a report received from the district judge of Prayagraj, indicating that between July 2023 and April 2024, lawyers in the district court abstained from work or resorted to strike for 127 days out of a total of 218 days.

Observing that the Supreme Court has said in numerous verdicts that lawyers going on a strike is not only contempt of court but also amounts to professional misconduct, the court sought suggestions from the Bar Council of India (BCI), Uttar Pradesh State Bar Council and Allahabad High Court Bar Association to curb the menace of strikes in the district courts of Uttar Pradesh.

In its order dated August 7, the bench also considered a report by the registrar general of the high court, which indicated that the judicial work in the district courts is seriously hampered across Uttar Pradesh due to strike calls given by lawyers.

The matter will now be heard next on September 25.

PM Modi-Biden Phone Call Over Ukraine, Safety Of Hindus In Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today received a phone call from US President Joe Biden and discussed his recent Ukraine visit and the situation in Bangladesh among other things.

While discussing Ukraine, PM Modi reiterated India's consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and expressed full support for the early return of peace and stability.

PM Modi, during the first visit to Ukraine by an Indian prime minister, called for a diplomatic solution to more than two years of war with Russia.

"We were not neutral from day one, we have taken a side, and we stand firmly for peace," he told Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

PM Modi and Biden also shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. They emphasised the restoration of law and order and ensuring the safety and security of the minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.

3 Mizoram Women, Stranded In Syria For About 20 Months, Rescued By Cops

The Mizoram Police has rescued and brought back three Mizo women who were engaged as housemaids and stranded in Syria for about 20 months, an officer said on Sunday.

The three women had left Mizoram in 2022 and began to face hardships soon after they landed in Syria in November of that year, he said.

After intense efforts by Mizoram police and Indian Embassy authorities and fulfilling all legal formalities, the three women left Syria on August 20 and were safely brought back home on Saturday, the police officer said.

While two women hailed from the Hnahthial district, the other one is from the Champhai district, he said.

The three women were illegally sent to Syria by a private placement agency in November to work as housemaids, he said.

Soon after they reached Syria on November 6, 2022, the three women began to face issues from their employers.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga have taken the issue very seriously, and with their direction, initiatives have been taken to rescue and repatriate the three Mizo women from Syria since May, he said.

Court cases were also involved in the matter.

During the process, the state government was in constant touch with the Indian embassy and Syrian authorities.

After the legal cases were won, the Indian embassy in Damascus gave shelter to the three women for three weeks, and when the exit visas were issued, they were brought to New Delhi on August 20 and then to Aizawl on Saturday, the police officer said.

They will be sent to their villages within this week to be reunited with their families, he added.

Body Of Missing 3-Year-Old Girl Found Inside Luggage Bag In Bihar: Police

The body of a three-year-old girl in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, who went missing a day ago, was found inside a luggage bag hidden near her home on Saturday, police said.

The girl was a resident of Nirala Niketan locality and, according to her father, she had left home on Friday afternoon along with her mother to attend a function.

"The father of the girl said the mother and daughter did not return home and that he was unable to contact his wife as her mobile phone was out of reach. Today, his neighbours informed the police about a luggage bag hidden in the bushes near his home. When we prised it open, we found the body," said Mithanpura police station SHO Ram Iqbal.

"We have sent the body for post-mortem examination. We shall not comment as to whether there were injury marks, which could suggest murder, till forensic experts complete their investigation," he said.

The SHO also said attempts were being made to track down the mother of the girl by placing her mobile phone under surveillance.

Don't Agree With Court But Have Called Off Maharashtra Bandh: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday expressed disagreement with a Bombay High Court order restraining political parties from calling a bandh, but asserted the opposition bloc MVA has withdrawn its proposed shutdown in Maharashtra on Saturday over a sexual abuse case in a school.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Thackeray said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has called off the August 24 (Saturday) bandh after the HC order, but leaders and workers from opposition parties will protest against the Mahayuti government with black bands tied around their mouth across the state.

The former CM, whose party is a constituent of the MVA, said he will also join the protest.

"We don't agree with the High Court order on bandh," Mr Thackeray maintained.

Earlier in the day, the HC restrained political parties or individuals from proceeding with a Maharashtra bandh over the sexual assault incident, on August 24 or any future date, saying such a protest will paralyse normal life.

A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said if political parties and individuals were not restrained from proceeding with the call for bandh on Saturday, huge losses, not only in terms of economy and business but also essential services and basic amenities, including health services will occur, which needs to be prevented.

The MVA alliance had called for a shutdown across the state on August 24 to protest against the alleged sexual assault of two kindergarten girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district.

The MVA comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP).

Court Issues Summons To Telangana Chief Minister In Defamation Case

A special court here on Thursday issued summons to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy asking him to appear personally before it on September 25 over a criminal defamation case filed by a BJP leader accusing him of making false and baseless allegations against the saffron party during the recent Lok Sabha election campaign.

The Special Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) for Excise Cases here, after considering the documents filed by the complainant and after examining the witnesses and hearing the arguments of the counsel for the complainant, issued summons to Reddy for offences under Sections 499, 171C, 171G, 153 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 125 of the Representation of Peoples Act to appear in person before the court on September 25.

Telangana BJP General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu had earlier filed a complaint in the Special JFCM for Excise cases, accusing the chief minister of making statements during an Lok Sabha election meeting in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on May 4 that the BJP, if voted to power, would change the Constitution and abolish reservations.

The petitioner claimed it was misleading and false and that the statement had defamed the party and party workers.

In the complaint, the BJP further claimed that the statements made by Reddy caused harm to the reputation of the party in the eyes of the voters, and making such "false statements with intent to unduly influence voters" amounts to election offences under the law.

After examination of the complainant and another person, and after going through the complaint and the statements and material placed before the Special JFCM for Excise cases, on August 21 it felt that a prima facie case is made out against the accused for the offence under section 499 of IPC and Section 125 of the Representation of Peoples Act.

Earlier, after the Special JFCM for Excise cases had adjourned the complaint, the BJP leader approached the Telangana High Court with a criminal petition seeking direction to the lower court to inquire into his complaint.

In June, the Telangana High Court had directed the Special Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) for Excise Cases to conduct proceedings and decide the complaint expeditiously in accordance with the law.

The high court disposed of the criminal petition directing the magistrate to hear the petition on a day-to-day basis and expedite the proceedings on the complaint.

'Told Amit Shah I Want To Act In Around 22 Films': Union Minister

Actor-cum-politician Suresh Gopi said on Wednesday that if he is removed as Union Minister of State for acting in films while holding his ministerial post, he would consider himself "saved".

Mr Gopi also said that he has requested permission to commence shooting for the film 'Ottakomban', but has not received it yet.

"But I will start shooting for it on September 6," he said.

The Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism said that there were 20-22 films he really wished to do after hearing the script, and has agreed to act in them.

When he sought permission from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to act in the films, he was asked how many.

"I said around 22. On hearing that, Amit Shah set aside my request letter. But he said permission will be given. Anyways, I will be here on September 6," Mr Gopi said while speaking at an event held here by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce.

He said that he will bring three or four officials from the ministry along with him to help him carry out his ministerial duties and for that special arrangements would have to be made on the film sets.

"All this I want to do. So, if they remove me for it, I would consider myself saved. That is all I can say," he said.

Mr Gopi said that he never wished to be a minister and still does not desire it.

"I bowed to their (his leaders) decision to make me a minister after they said that they were giving the post to me for the people of Thrissur who voted me to power and not for myself. I accepted that decision.

"I still obey my leaders and will continue to do so. But without my passion (cinema), I will die," he said.

AI To Help Detect Tuberculosis Based On Cough Sounds: Google

In a bid to fight the rising burden of tuberculosis (TB) in India, Indian startup Salcit Technologies is exploring the use of Google's Health Acoustic Representations (HeAR) model to enhance early detection of TB based on cough sounds, the tech giant said on Tuesday.

In a blog post, Google said that its HeAR bioacoustic foundation model is trained on approximately 300 million pieces of audio data, and in particular roughly 100 million cough sounds. It can help extend screening for TB more widely across India, the company said.

The Hyderabad-based Salcit Technologies will use the HeAR model to build on research for its product Swaasa, it noted.

Launched in 2020, Swaasa uses an AI-driven algorithm that can assess if human lungs are abnormal.

HeAR was introduced in March 2024 and is designed to help researchers build models that can listen to human sounds and flag early signs of disease.

"Compared to blood tests and imaging, sound is by far the most accessible piece of information that we can get about a person. HeAR can pick up chest x-ray findings, tuberculosis, and even detect Covid from cough sounds," said Sujay Kakarmath, a product manager at Google Research.

"In places where access to advanced medical resources is scarce, we can imagine a future where a healthcare professional with a machine learning model and a phone can collect a sample of your sound and inform clinical care. With HeAR, we hope that researchers will be able to discover new acoustic biomarkers a lot faster," he added.

The Stop TB Partnership, an UN-hosted organisation dedicated to ending TB by 2030, also supports this approach.

"Solutions like HeAR will enable AI-powered acoustic analysis to break new ground in tuberculosis screening and detection, offering a potentially low-impact, accessible tool to those who need it most," said Zhi Zhen Qin, digital health specialist with the Stop TB Partnership.

The blog post said that Google is inviting researchers interested in exploring HeAR's potential to request access to the HeAR API.

Through its research, Google hopes to keep helping advance the development of future diagnostic tools and monitoring solutions that assist improved health outcomes for communities around the globe.

Restoration Of J&K Statehood Centrepiece Of Omar Abdullah's Party Manifesto

Fight for the restoration of autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, repealing Public Safety Act, release of political prisoners, one lakh jobs, free electricity and other issues are among promises made by the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference in its election manifesto released today.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who released the manifesto, vowed to fight for the political and legal status of the former state. "It took the BJP decades to achieve its ideological objective of scrapping Article 370. We will also fight for its restoration regardless of time it will take," said Mr Abdullah.

If elected to power, the National Conference leader said their first objective is restoration of statehood and then a fight for the state's legal and constitutional status. "If the Centre doesn't restore the statehood of J&K immediately, we will approach the Supreme Court and ask for implication of its directions on statehood," said Mr Abdullah.

On its political agenda, the manifesto says that the party will strive for the implementation of autonomy resolution by Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2000. This is the first time NC has mentioned the autonomy issue since the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019.

In June 2000, the J&K assembly had passed a unanimous resolution demanding greater autonomy, restoration of pre-1953 status when the Centre had very limited control over the erstwhile state. Even the Supreme Court and the Election commission had no jurisdiction over Jammu and Kashmir.

The resolution was subsequently rejected by the Central government.
In 1965, the post of Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister and Sadre Reyasat (head of state) was replaced with Chief Minister and Governor after a major amendment in the constitution.

J&K retained its own separate constitution and the flag till August 2019, when the Centre scrapped special status under Article 370.
The manifesto also talks about repealing Public Safety Act that gives the police powers to arrest and jail a person up to two years without a trial. The party has also promised to release all political prisoners who have been detained over the last five years.

On the issue of unemployment, Mr Abdullah said that Jammu and Kashmir is facing highest level of unemployment in the country and the party has promised to give one lakh jobs to its young people.
Mr Abdullah said people from every corner of J&K have given their suggestions for manifesto. "It is not just an election document. It is an agenda for governance for the next five years," he said.

The party has also promised 200 units of free electricity and 12 cooking gas cylinders free to families belonging to Economically Weaker Sections.

4 Andhra Employees Burn Files Linked To Polavaram Project, Suspended

Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday suspended four employees in connection with the burning of documents related to the Polavaram project.

Taking serious note of the incident that occurred at the Polavaram Irrigation Project (Resettlement and Rehabilitation) office at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district, Collector P. Prasanthi suspended the four employees.

Senior Assistants K. Kanuka Raju, Karam Baby, Special Revenue Inspector Kalajyothi and subordinate Rajasekhar have been suspended for failing to follow the due procedure in destroying the photocopies related to the office.

Deputy Tahsildars A. Kumari and A. Satya Devi have been issued show-cause notices.

The staff working in the Left Main Canal wing of the office on Saturday allowed a sweeper to burn a bunch of 96 photocopies related to the project.

District Collector said the action was taken against the employees for destroying files without the prior approval of the project administrator, who is the head of the Polavaram Project (R&R) office.

Revenue officials lodged a complaint with the police against the staff responsible for burning the office files. The East Godavari police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Earlier, Tourism and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh said that the state government has taken serious note of the burning of documents related to the Polavaram project. He said culprits will be given stringent punishment.

The minister, along with some officials visited the Polavaram project office. Officials said that there is a procedure to dispose of old files but the same was apparently not followed.

Some half-burnt papers were moved to the office. A Revenue Divisional Officer had earlier said that the employees found many photocopies and waste papers while shifting files from old cupboards to new cupboards.

The incident created a sensation in light of a similar incident reported last month at the office of Sub-Collector Madanapalle in Annamayya district where key files were destroyed in a fire.

The TDP-led NDA government ordered a high-level probe into the incident following allegations that some leaders of the YSR Congress Party could be behind this to destroy evidence into the alleged irregularities committed during the rule of YSR Congress.

Dawood's Daughter's Gown And A Kidnapping: A Fresh Look At MP Underworld

A new book by a retired IPS officer claims to reveal the chilling connection between the bridal gown of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's daughter and a high-profile kidnapping case in Indore in 2005. The book by Dr Shailendra Srivastava, titled "Shackle The Storm", threads together the details of how the seemingly unrelated events are linked, shedding light on a dark chapter of Madhya Pradesh's criminal history.

The story begins with the bridal gown worn by Dawood's daughter, Mahrukh, during her wedding in Mecca in July 2005. The gown was crafted by a tailor named Ismail Khan, a resident of Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh.

Barely a month later, on August 17, 2005, Nitesh Nagori, the 20-year-old son of a prominent cement manufacturer in Indore, was kidnapped. A ransom of Rs 4 crore was sought for him. The police caught some of the accused and managed to release him before the ransom was paid.

Investigation indicated that Ismail Khan was involved in the abduction.

Ismail Khan was closely associated with Aftab Alam, one of Dawood Ibrahim's trusted lieutenants. Dawood Ibrahim was to get a share of the ransom.

The police believe that Ismail, who had fled after the kidnapping, was promised a lucrative commission and a job in Dubai for his role in the crime, along with Rs 1 crore for stitching the gown.

Ismail and Aftab have both been on the run since the incident, evading capture for nearly two decades.

In September 2005, the police arrested Nitesh Nagori's friend Dhruv, and another associate, Gaurav, for allegedly assisting Ismail in the kidnapping.

During interrogation, Dhruv identified Ismail as the mastermind, leading the police to unravel the connection between Ismail and the infamous underworld network.

The investigation also revealed that Aftab Alam, who had escaped Mumbai in 1997, was operating from the Gulf during the kidnapping.

Aftab's involvement complicated the case. The Interpol was alerted and warrants issued for the arrest of Ismail, Aftab, and other suspects, including Randhawa and Ibrahim, who are on the run.

Dr Srivastava's book goes beyond the kidnapping case to delve into the underworld's operations in Madhya Pradesh, particularly the covert activities of Dawood Ibrahim and his notorious rival, Chhota Rajan.

The narrative reveals a previously untold story of Vicky Malhotra, a key member of Chhota Rajan gang, who was arrested after inadvertently alerting the Mumbai Police by using a phone number linked to a previous ransom threat in Indore.

Malhotra, whose real name is Vijay Kumar Yadav, provided an in-depth account of his life in the underworld, including his involvement in multiple assassination attempts on Dawood Ibrahim. The book uncovers chilling details, such as a failed attempt to target Dawood during his daughter's burial in Karachi and another botched plan in Dubai.

One of the most intriguing stories in the book is the transformation of Vijay Yadav into Vicky Malhotra, a feared don in Chhota Rajan's gang.

Dr. Srivastava explores how this petty thief from Murshidabad rose to prominence in the underworld and came close to assassinating Dawood Ibrahim on three occasions.

Shackle The Storm is more than just a crime thriller; it is a compilation of 14 gripping stories that traverse the murky world of crime, justice, and the underworld in Madhya Pradesh.

The book also recounts Dr Srivastava's experience as the IG of Indore Range during the 2006 Bhojshala riots, where he played a crucial role in managing communal tensions and exposing the activities of the banned terrorist organization SIMI.

As Dr Srivastava reveals, these stories are not just about crime but also about the courage of those who stand against it, offering readers a glimpse into the untold tales of Madhya Pradesh's fight against terrorism and the underworld.

Thar, Scorpio SUVs Inside Restricted Zone In Ranthambore Tiger Reserve Seized

Fourteen SUVs believed to be on an off-roading experience trip from five states were caught in Zone 8 - an area not open to public access via vehicles - of Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur, forest department officers said.

The vehicles came from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, the officers said.

The forest department has suspended two rangers for the lapse.

On August 15, at least 12 Mahindra Thar and two Scorpio SUVs managed to sneak into the ecologically fragile tiger reserve for a private safari led by a tour organiser called Adventure Tours.

When visuals of the SUVs inside the zone where personal vehicles were not allowed went viral on social media, the forest department swung into action. It was suspected some forest rangers had illegally allowed the private vehicles into the park.

"It is a matter of illegal entry. We have seized the vehicles. We are further investigating the matter," divisional forest officer Ramamnand Bhakkar told NDTV.

During monsoon, the wildlife park is shut for all safaris, which makes it all the more surprising that private vehicles were found inside the park, sources said.

A video of the vehicles inside the park also shows the visitors walking around in Zone 8. It appeared one of the vehicles got stuck. This video was taken by a local. It exposed the illegal entry of private SUVs inside the tiger reserve.

Off-roader and rally driver Rattan Dhillon also posted visuals of the incident on X.

Under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 violators could be fined up to Rs 1 lakh.

"I Am The Candidate": DK Shivakumar's Declaration For Key Poll In Karnataka

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday said that he is the Congress candidate for Channapatna Assembly bypoll.

Earlier too, Mr Shivakumar had said that he is the candidate, irrespective of whoever contests from the party.

The Deputy Chief Minister participated in the Independence Day celebrations and raised the national flag in the by-poll bound Channapatna for the first time today, which was seen with political connotations.

Mr Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka Congress chief, is neither the MLA representing Channapatna nor the in-charge Minister of Ramanagara district, which was recently renamed as Bengaluru South, under which Channapatna taluk comes.

Later in the day, replying to reporters' question in Nelamangala on the city outskirts as to who will be the Congress candidate from Channapatna, he said, "I'm the candidate." He did not elaborate further.

Earlier, too, he had dropped enough hints that he might contest the by-poll from the segment.

Mr Shivakumar currently represents the neighbouring Kanakapura segment.

Channapatna bypoll is necessitated as the seat fell vacant following the election of its representative -- JD(S) leader and now Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy -- to Lok Sabha in the recent elections.

The byelection schedule for this Assembly seat is yet to be announced by the Election Commission.

Though there were talks earlier that Shivakumar's brother and former MP DK Suresh, who lost from Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha segment, may be fielded by Congress in Channapatna, speculations were rife in the political circles, especially the grand old party, that the Deputy Chief Minister may himself enter the fray to avenge his brother's defeat and to re-establish his clout in the region.

According to sources, if Mr Shivakumar contests and wins from Channapatna, he may vacate the seat that he currently represents for Suresh.

Addressing the Independence Day event, Mr Shivakumar said he would work for the development and wellbeing of the citizens of Channapatna, as he also took a veiled dig at his political bete noire Mr Kumaraswamy for "abandoning" them, without taking his name.

"It is an opportunity for me to come and hoist the flag here. For the last 35 years I have been participating in such events in Kanakapura, also Ramanagara and Bengaluru. Today I'm doing this pious work in Channapatna before you. As there is no representative (MLA) from Channapatna segment to hoist the flag, I have come here as the son of your house. I have not come to do politics, but to show how development can be made," he said.

Stating that Channapatana was close to his heart and he liked the place and its people, Mr Shivakumar, later speaking to reporters, said: "It is unfortunate that the previous MLA (Kumaraswamy) did not attend such celebrations (Independence Day) here...probably he did not value independence and freedom struggle." "People have affection towards us (Congress) as the party got freedom for the country. They want to support the party and the government. People have decided it," he said, expressing confidence about Congress' win in the by-poll.

Both Channapatna and Kanakapura are part of the Vokkaliga dominated Ramanagara or now Bengaluru South district, which is Shivakumar's home turf and, for Kumaraswamy, it is the "place of his political birth", as he himself has declared several times.

It comes under the Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha segment from where Kumaraswamy's brother-in-law and eminent cardiologist CN Manjunath won as a BJP candidate as part of an arrangement between alliance partners BJP and JD(S), by defeating Suresh, which Shivakumar wants to avenge, according to party sources.

BJP MLC CP Yogeeshwara and Kumaraswamy's actor-turned-politician son Nikhil Kumaraswamy's names are doing the rounds as probable candidates from the BJP-JD(S) alliance for Channapatna.

Nikhil had lost the 2023 Assembly polls from the neighbouring Ramanagara Assembly segment. Interestingly, Yogeeshwara and Shivakumar shared the stage and were seated next to each other at the Independence Day event today.

Amid reports that Kumaraswamy may not cede the seat to him, Yogeeshwara on Monday said he was a strong ticket aspirant for the Channapatna Assembly bypoll and expressed hope that the BJP leadership along with alliance partner JD(S) will field him as their joint candidate.

He also said in case he fails to get a ticket, he will contest as an independent, and wants to be back in the NDA fold later. Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna Assembly seat in 2018 and 2023.

Before that, Yogeeshwara had represented the seat as a BJP and Samajwadi Party MLA. He had earlier also represented the seat both as an independent and from the Congress party.

"Women Attacked, Disrobed, On Bengal's Streets": Governor Turns The Screw

Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has expressed displeasure with the state police's handling of the rape-murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. He has also called an emergency meeting with Vice Chancellors of the state's universities and will also hold a meeting with protesters tomorrow.

"The Governor has expressed his displeasure on complicity and alleged connivance of the police in matters of crime, particularly campus crimes," read a statement from the Governor's House.

Such a crime "shames the whole of Bengal, shames India.. and humanity," he said in a video message.

Bengal, he said, "has to see reason".

"We have seen incidents women being attacked on street, disrobing... Flogging on the street... public flogging. All this is repeatedly happening on the streets of Bengal," added the Governor, who has been at loggerheads with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government in the past.

"Is this the place where Rabindranath Tagore said, 'Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high'," he said, quoting a poem by the Nobel laureate.

Effective protection should be given to girl students, women staff and members of non-teaching staff immediately, he said.

The statement from his office said the Governor "deplores the absolute failure of the Kolkata Police in handling the case in a just and fair manner".  It also said that he has met many delegations over the matter and will be having discussions with the protestors tomorrow.

Though the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the protests in Bengal are continuing. It has cascaded over the state's borders and spread across the country, with even small towns out to show solidarity.

UP Anti-Conversion Act Ensures Religious Freedom For All: High Court

The Allahabad High Court has observed that the purpose of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 is to guarantee religious freedom to all persons and sustain the spirit of secularism in India.

In an order passed on Friday, while rejecting the bail of one Ajeem, Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal said that though the Constitution guarantees each person the right to profess, practise, and propagate their religion, this individual right does not translate into a collective right to proselytise, as religious freedom equally belongs to both the person converting and the individual being converted.

Ajeem was booked under sections 323/504/506 of the IPC and section 3/5(1) UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 in Badaun district after being accused of forcing a woman to accept Islam and sexually exploiting her.

He applied for bail before the high court claiming that he was falsely implicated in the case, asserting that the woman was in a relationship with him and had left her home on her own.

He also claimed that she had earlier confirmed their marriage in statements recorded under sections 161 and 164 criminal procedure code (CrPC) in a related case.

The state counsel opposed Ajeem's bail citing the woman's statement, according to which, she was forced to convert to Islam.

The court held that the complainant was forced to convert by the man and his family and was also forced to witness an animal sacrifice on Bakrid and cook and eat meat.

The court noted that she was held captive by the man and was forced by his family members to perform certain Islamic rituals, which was unacceptable to her.

The court also observed that Ajeem could not bring on record any material that demonstrates that an application was moved under Section 8 of the 2021 Act, required to convert the woman to Islam before the marriage/nikah took place.

Section 8 of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 deals with the requirement of a declaration before conversion of religion.

Making these observations, the court in its order dated August 9 rejected the bail of the applicant, while also noting that there is a prima facie contravention of sections 3 and 8 of the Act.

Section 3 of the Act prohibits conversion from one religion to another religion by misrepresentation, force, fraud, undue influence, coercion or allurement.

70-Year-Old Man Attempts Rape On Minor Girl In UP, Arrested: Police

A 70-year-old man allegedly attempted to rape a seven-year-old girl at his home in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, police said Monday, adding that he has been arrested.

The alleged attempt to rape was foiled due to a vigilant local who had followed the man luring the girl with chocolates to his residence in the Gwaltoli area of the city on Friday, they said.

Maulana Mukhtar alias Maulana chacha was arrested on Sunday, a police officer said.

"The accused lured the girl living in the same area with chocolates and toffees. He then took her to his house where he attempted rape," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Central Kanpur) Dinesh Tripathi said.

A local who had seen the culprit going with the girl sensed danger and followed them, Tripathi said adding that he then peeped into the house through a window and captured him on camera while stripping the girl and himself.

The person immediately called all the neighbours and exposed Mukhtar, Tripathi added.

The neighbours alerted the police but the accused quickly fled the spot before they arrived, the DCP said.

A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and he was arrested, police said.

Mukhtar on Monday was produced in a local court which has remanded him in judicial custody, police added.

"Act Decisively": MK Stalin To Centre Over Arrest Of Fishermen By Lanka

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar over the arrest of 35 Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka and sought decisive action to secure their release.

Thirty-five fishermen from Ramanathapuram district were arrested on August 9 by Sri Lankan Navy and their four motorised country boats were also seized, Mr Stalin said in a letter to S Jaishankar, conveying deep anguish and concern.

"I wish to recall that just recently a delegation from Tamil Nadu that included the MPs and fishermen representatives met you after we had lost two fishermen. It is distressing to note that despite this, there has been no significant relief or respite in this regard. It is imperative that stronger diplomatic measures be pursued to ensure the immediate release of Tamil Nadu fishermen and to establish a more permanent solution to prevent such incidents from recurring," said Mr Stalin.

The safety and security of coastal communities must be a priority, and "I hope that the government of India will take decisive action to secure the release and repatriation of all the apprehended fishermen and their fishing boats."

The ongoing detentions of fishermen are not only causing immense hardship to the affected families but is also creating a "pervasive sense of fear and uncertainty in our coastal communities."

Furthermore, the CM said the "psychological and financial toll on these families is devastating, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to continue their traditional way of life."

ULFA-I Planning An Attack Before Independence Day: Assam Top Cop

Assam DGP GP Singh said on Saturday that a unit of United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) active along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border is making plans to launch an attack in the region before Independence Day.

The DGP has been camping in the Upper Assam area, believed to be a stronghold of ULFA-I, for the last four days.

“We have intelligence input that ULFA-I has been planning to launch an attack to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations in Assam. A unit of the outlawed group is active along the interstate border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. However, the state police, army and other paramilitary forces are prepared to neutralise the ULFA-I cadres,” the DGP told media persons on Saturday.

According to the top cop, both the state and Central governments are taking a cautious approach to foil any probable attack by the banned militant outfit.

“Security measures have been tightened in many areas. We are looking into all aspects,” Mr Singh added.

In 2004, a bomb blast during an Independence Day parade at the Dhemaji College ground in Assam left at least 18 people dead and numerous others injured. The police claimed that the explosive placed close to the college gate was set off by a remote-controlled device. The blast occurred when teachers and children from different schools were passing through the gate.

After the blast, the locals attacked police vehicles near the college, forcing the cops to resort to lathi charge firing of tear gas shells.

Pathetic To See Pregnant Women In 'Dolis' In The Age Of AI: CB Naidu

At a time when the whole world is talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI), it is pathetic to see patients and pregnant women from remote tribals hamlets being taken to nearby hospitals on 'dolis' (palanquins), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Friday.

He assured the tribals that steps would be taken to see to it that tribal people do not have to depend on 'dolis' anymore, and the government would soon re-introduce feeder ambulances and provide road connectivity to tribal villages.

Addressing a gathering of tribals to mark World Adivasi Day, Mr Naidu said poverty will be completely eradicated among the tribals with a comprehensive plan and study circles will soon be established in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati exclusively for the Adivasis.

The Chief Minister actively participated in the Thimsa dance programme along with tribal women on this occasion and later presented a saree to the Goddess of these tribals.

Announcing that the Chaitanyam 2.0 (Awareness-2.0) programme will be taken up soon for the overall progress of tribals, he said that road connectivity will be provided soon to 2,191 tribal villages.

Mr Naidu also stated that safe drinking water would be supplied to every tribal household with an expenditure of Rs 2,373 crore and made it clear that this coalition government would not show any kind of discrimination against any section of people. He also ruled out pursuing vindictive politics.

"But I am making it clear that the huge amount of public money looted by the leaders of the previous government will be completely recovered and this amount will be spent for the welfare of the poor," the Chief Minister declared.

He also said that organic products will be encouraged more effectively besides giving a fillip to Araku coffee.

Mr Naidu also announced that the Paderu medical college will be completed with Rs 500 crore while a museum will be set up at Lambasingi for the freedom fighters. "I am really concerned that the Adivasis are born poor and are ending their lives in absolute poverty. This situation needs to be changed immediately," he said.

Stating that the District Selection Committee (DSC) recruitments have been announced recently to fill 16,347 vacant posts, the Chief Minister said that free coaching will be provided to the Adivasi candidates who want to appear for this test. The previous government had withdrawn several welfare programmes, he said and added that all such schemes would be reintroduced in a more effective manner.

Asking the Adivasi people whether justice was done to any single person during the previous government, he said that Anna Canteens would soon be set up in the tribal areas. Mr Naidu also said that the Land Titling Act has been revoked to check the attempts made by the previous government to illegally grab the lands of innocent people.

UP Barber Arrested For Spitting On Customer's Face, Shop Bulldozed

The barber's makeshift shop was bulldozed by the local administration.

Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Anand said, "We received a report regarding a video in which a barber, Yusuf, was seen applying his spit on the face of a customer. Acting on the complaint we arrested him on Wednesday night." According to the police, the incident occurred a fortnight ago but the video was posted online recently and it began doing rounds on Wednesday.

The local administration on Thursday reached the spot and bulldozed the makeshift salon.

"The salon was made using tin sheets and was an encroachment. It was removed with a bulldozer today," the CO said.

600 Bangladeshis Try To Enter Bengal, Stopped By Border Force

Even as the political turmoil and violence continues in Bangladesh, a group of nearly 600 people from the country were stopped from entering India at a border point in West Bengal by the Border Security Force, which has been on high alert since prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled the country on Monday.

Many members of the group - which tried to enter India on Wednesday, the eve of an interim government taking over in Bangladesh - pleaded with BSF personnel to be allowed in, claiming that they feared for their lives.

Officials said that the group tried to cross the border into India at the Dakshin Berubari village in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

"They appealed to us and asked to be let into the country, saying that they were afraid of being attacked and also feared for their lives. It was explained to them that it is not possible to let them enter in this fashion," said an official.

While some people in the group dispersed, many were still at the border point late on Wednesday evening, hoping that they would eventually be allowed to cross over.

A local resident told news agency PTI that the people gathered across the barbed wire were pleading to be allowed in.

"But we are helpless. They recounted their horrific experiences," the resident said.

Trouble had been brewing in Bangladesh since before the January 7 elections, which was won by Sheikh Hasina's Awami League in a landslide, but the electoral exercise was widely seen as being far from free and fair.

Student protests began in June after a Bangladeshi high court reinstated 30 per cent reservation in government jobs for family members of freedom fighters and veterans from Bangladesh's 1971 War of Independence. The quota was later scaled back by the country's supreme court but Ms Hasina's handling of the situation and labelling of the protesters infuriated students.

Protests continued with students demanding Ms Hasina step down and clashes between agitators and the police left over 100 dead and dozens injured across the country on Sunday.

Monday saw lakhs of students flooding the streets and heading towards the prime minister's official residence, Ganabhaban, forcing Ms Hasina to resign and flee.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will take oath on Thursday as the head of an interim government, Bangladesh's Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced.

Case Against Teacher Who Slapped Child For Failing To Recite 'ABCD' Quashed

The Delhi High Court has quashed an FIR against a teacher for allegedly slapping a three-year-old child nine years ago for failing to recite A, B, C, D.

The court passed the order noting that the teacher and the child's family intend to put a quietus to the proceedings arising out of a minor issue and pending for nine years, and that the settlement shall promote harmony between the parties and allow them to move forward in life.

"Also, the chances of conviction are bleak in view of an amicable settlement between the parties. Further, no past involvement of the petitioner (teacher) has been brought to the notice of this court," Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta said, adding that continuing with the proceedings would be nothing but an abuse of the process of the court.

An FIR was registered in 2015 on a complaint from the child's mother, alleging that when her son returned from school, he had injury marks on his face. The child informed his mother that as he was unable to recite A, B, C, D, he was slapped by the teacher.

The court noted that the child's statement was not recorded till police filed a chargesheet and the investigating agency never took the aid of a child psychologist or counsellor for the purpose of even ascertaining whether the three-and-a-half-year-old boy was in a position to correctly disclose the reason for a bruise on his face.

It noted that the chargesheet merely proceeded on the statement of the child's mother on assumption.

"Apparently, there was no motive on the part of the petitioner to cause any hurt and she categorically denied any such incident. Surprisingly, the metropolitan magistrate, after the filing of the chargesheet, vide order dated January 9, 2020, directed to record the statement of the victim in respect of an incident dated February 27, 2015, without even realising the value of such a delayed statement after a gap of five years," the court said.

It referred to a provision of the Right to Education Act that imposes an absolute bar on corporal punishment and mental harassment to a child that may take place in government or private schools for disciplining children.

The provision states that corporal punishment to a child in any form is deplorable, even though the motive may be to make the child realise that his act is unacceptable, wrong or disappointing.

Provisions under the Juvenile Justice Act also underscore the importance to uphold the dignity and rights of a child, the court noted.

Case Against Man For Issuing Death Threat To Chief Justice DY Chandrachud

An FIR was registered in Betul in Madhya Pradesh against a person for allegedly issuing a death threat on social media to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in connection with the Supreme Court's judgement on reservations, a police official said on Monday.

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court on Thursday held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within the Scheduled Castes, which form a socially heterogeneous class, for granting reservation for the uplift of castes that are socially and educationally more backward.

"The FIR was registered under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act. Efforts are on to arrest the accused," Betul Ganj police station in-charge Ravikant Daheria said.

In a Facebook post in Hindi, one Pankaj Atulkar said he would kill the CJI for giving a "decision to enslave the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people", which has "violated the Constitution".

"Did You Make Crores By Growing Onions?" DK Shivakumar Jabs Union Minister

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday termed the opposition BJP and JD(S)' ongoing 'padayatra' against alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority site allotment scam, seeking to corner the Congress government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as a march for "redemption from their sins".

He also questioned JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy about the source of his family's wealth and said he could not have made thousands of crores through farming.

"BJP-JD(S) padayatre is a "Paapa Vimochana Padayatre" (a foot march for redemption from their sins)... it is the march of the corrupt, by the corrupt and for the corrupt," Mr Shivakumar said.

Speaking at the 'Janandolana' event, a public meeting by the Congress to counter BJP-JD(S)' padayatra, he accused BJP leaders and their family, Mr Kumaraswamy and his JDS leaders and their families of indulging in corruption.

The week long 'Mysuru Chalo padayatre' by BJP and JD(S) from Bengaluru that began on Saturday is against the alleged fraudulent allotment of sites to land losers by MUDA, including Siddaramaiah's wife Parvathi.

Noting that he runs a business along with farming, Mr Shivakumar said while Mr Kumaraswamy has clearly said he is the son of the soil and does only farming. "Did he make thousands of crores of wealth just by growing potatoes and onions?" He also sought to know about Mr Kumaraswamy's elder brother H D Balakrishna Gowda, a retired KAS officer, and his family's assets.

"Kumaranna (Kumaraswamy), you can discuss my assets. Start from the first, your brother -- Balakrishna Gowda, his wife, her father and family -- in Mysuru, Srirangapatna and Bengaluru. Also their benamis. How much land is in their name, you have to answer it. A government employee, how many thousand crores is he worth?" he asked.

Averring that he hasn't yet spoken about the alleged denotification and mining scams involving Mr Kumaraswamy, the Deputy CM said, "I am yet to release your family's assets, but I will soon...." JD(S) won 136 seats under his presidency, but JD(S) secured only 19 seats inder Kumaraswamy, SMr hivakumar said.

"Now, you (Kumaraswamy) have joined your hands with the BJP to save your party. You are an expert in hit and run and you are a blackmailer... You said you will not attend the padayatra but why are you attending now. You are trying to ruin JD(S) for the sake of power."

Channapatna Assembly segment will be facing the by-polls soon. The date is yet to be announced.

The bypoll in Channapatna is necessitated, following Kumaraswamy's election to the Lok Sabha from Mandya.

Speculations are rife within the Congress circles that either Mr Shivakumar or his brother D K Suresh, a former MP, who unsuccessfully contested from Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha segment, are likely to be Congress candidate from Channapatna.

"Whoever may be the candidate in Channapatna, but your vote goes to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The Congress party symbol is the real candidate. I will work for this constituency like a legislator, give me an opportunity by supporting Congress," he appealed.

Bengal Minister Threatens, Abuses Woman Official For Removing Encroachments

West Bengal minister Akhil Giri on Saturday courted controversy after he was seen in video clips threatening and verbally abusing a woman official of the state forest department and her team after they removed encroachments on its land in Purba Medinipur district.

The BJP, which shared a video of the minister's outburst on X, demanded Mr Giri's arrest while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) said the party does not support such behaviour.

Mr Giri was flanked by locals when he was seen in videos also telecast by television channels threatening the woman official, identified as Manisha Sahu posted as a ranger, of "cutting down on her stay" there.

"A few shops had been set up illegally on the forest department land near the sea beach in Tajpur. These establishments were so close to the sea that they got submerged during high tides. On Friday night, these shops were removed," a senior forest department official said.

After learning about the anti-encroachment operation, Mr Giri, accompanied by local traders, reached the spot and confronted the forest department officials on Saturday.

"The forest department officials removed several shops on Friday night. Many constructions have taken place on forest land, but the department could not do anything against them. The forest department is disturbing these poor people," Mr Giri who is the local MLA told PTI.

When contacted, Ms Sahu declined to comment.

Sources said that Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda contacted the woman official and took note of the entire incident.

Sources in the forest department also said that the DFO of Purba Medinipur district would be filing a report about the entire matter to the higher authorities.

Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, while speaking to journalists, said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee were keeping an eye on the matter.

"We oppose Giri's words and behaviour. It is undesirable. If he had something to say about the forest department, he could have told Birbaha Hansda. Instead, the mistreatment of the woman officer is unfortunate. Our party does not endorse that," Mr Ghosh said.

Slamming Mr Giri for his attitude towards a woman official, the BJP demanded that the minister should be arrested and put behind bars.

"Will Mamata Banerjee dare to throw out this minister and put him behind bars? Will charges be filed against him for obstructing government workers and outraging the modesty of women? Let's see if this goon is kicked inside the jail for threatening to indirectly kill and outrage the modesty of a woman," the BJP posted on X.

Incidentally, two years back in 2022, Mr Giri's controversial remarks on President Droupadi Murmu were severely criticised.

Mamata Banerjee, also the TMC supremo, had to apologise for Mr Giri's "derogatory remark" on President Murmu after a massive uproar by the opposition.

Gujarat Congress Leader's Chair-Pulling Act Leaves Cop Injured, Case Filed

A Gujarat Congress leader was booked on Saturday for allegedly insulting and causing injuries to a Dalit woman state intelligence bureau official by pulling the chair from under her at a party MLA's press conference in Bhuj in Kutch district, police said.

The woman assistant intelligence officer was on official duty at the press conference when Haresh Ahir pulled the chair from under her after she stood up, causing her to fall and getting injured when she tried to sit back, Deputy Superintendent of Police AR Zankat said.

Ahir is the coordinator of Congress Kisan Cell and was present at a press conference organised by Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani at the circuit house in Bhuj where the incident occurred.

IB official Reena Chauhan was present there as part of her job, which involved preparing a report on the press conference, officials said.

In a post of X, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi condemned the incident and said the Congress was "anti-women and anti-Dalit", while Mevani alleged Ahir was framed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act frivolously by the woman official at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party government.

Sanghavi also shared the video of the incident, which showed Chauhan standing up to click a photo when Ahir deliberately pulled the chair from under her, making her fall on the ground after she tried to sit back.

Because of the fall, she suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital, the minister said, adding the woman official was shocked and depressed after the incident.

Ahir was well aware that the woman was an IB official and was present at the event on government duty and he also knew she was a Dalit, due to which he quipped that she was not worthy of sitting on a chair, the Deputy SP told reporters.

"She fell hard on the ground, after which he told her she was not worth sitting on the chair," Zankat said.

As per the FIR lodged at Bhuj A-division police station, Ahir's act was intentional and was meant to insult and make fun of her despite knowing she belonged to the Scheduled Caste community.

The FIR also stated Ahir did this intentionally to inflict injuries on her, adding he knew Chauhan since the two had met often at various events.

The Congress leader was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 221 (voluntarily obstructs any public servant in the discharge of his public functions) and 133 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person, otherwise than on grave provocation).

The provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked, the Deputy SP informed.

Posting a video of the incident on X, Sangahvi said, "The mentality of Congress has always been anti-women and anti-Dalit. See how during a press conference of Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, his close friend Kutch Congress leader HS Aahir deliberately injured a Dalit woman officer by pulling her chair. This is a very condemnable matter." Hitting back, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani said the BJP government used a woman IB official to target a Congress worker who tried to expose the home minister.

"Gujarat BJP government and its home minister do not utter a word when Dalits are murdered, raped, their lands usurped and sanitation workers die in gutter. They do not get the cases investigated, no FIR or chargesheet is filed on time. When a Congress worker was trying to expose the home minister, a frivolous FIR was lodged against him with the intention of targeting him using this woman IB official," Mevani told reporters.

Man 'Settles' Obscene Messages Case, Court Orders Community Service

The Delhi High Court has directed a man to do community service in a hospital, orphanage and old-age home for three months while quashing an FIR against him for allegedly sending obscene messages to a woman, saying he has to “atone for his sins”.

The high court, which also imposed a costs of Rs 25,000 on the man, said he must realise that he cannot take the courts for granted and he cannot get a feeling that he could get away with the crime by entering into a settlement with the victim.

Besides, the court also directed the man to plant 50 trees at his expense in his locality and nurture them and asked the investigating officer of the case to ensure that the trees are planted and a compliance report be submitted before it.

“Considering the nature of offence, this court is of the opinion that the petitioner (man) cannot be allowed to go scot-free only because the complainant (woman) has decided to enter into a settlement with him. The petitioner has to atone for his sins…,” Justice Subramonium Prasad said.

The court imposed the costs on him so that he does not repeat such kind of offences in future and said that the amount be deposited in the ‘Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund' within four weeks.

While directing the man to do community service, the court said he shall perform duties at Jyotiba Phule Old Age Home for Senior Citizens, LNJP Hospital and Udayan Care-Orphanage at Mayur Vihar for one month each, after which a compliance report shall be filed.

In case of any absenteeism or default or misbehaviour on the part of the man during this period, it shall be conveyed to the police official concerned who shall inform the prosecutor for recalling the order, the court said.

The court was dealing with a plea by the man seeking quashing of the FIR on the ground that he and the woman have amicably settled the disputes and she has no objection if the case is closed.

The court quashed the FIR registered against the man in 2014 for the offence punishable under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67A (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
