CBI Arrests Gujarat School Owner Over NEET-UG Exam Malpractice

The Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the alleged malpractices in conducting the NEET-UG exam at a private school in Godhra of Gujarat in May, on Sunday arrested its owner.

With the arrest of Dixit Patel, owner of Jay Jalaram School situated near Godhra in Panchmahal district, the number of persons arrested so far- five of them were held by Gujarat Police- has gone up to six.

Jay Jalaram School was one of the designated centres where the NEET-UG exam was held on May 5.

Mr Patel was arrested in the early hours of Sunday from his residence in Panchmahal district, said public prosecutor Rakesh Thakor.

"As the case has been handed over to the CBI by the Gujarat government, a CBI team will produce him (Dixit Patel) before a designated court in Ahmedabad to acquire his remand," said Mr Thakor.

Mr Patel is the sixth person to be arrested in this case wherein the accused had allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh each from at least 27 candidates to help them clear the test.

The other five persons, who were arrested earlier by the Panchmahal police, include Vadodara-based education consultant Parshuram Roy, Jay Jalaram School principal Purushottam Sharma, school teacher Tushar Bhatt, and alleged middlemen Vibhor Anand and Arif Vohra.

After taking over the probe a week back, the CBI had sought custody of four accused except Roy. On Saturday, the Godhra district court remanded Sharma, Bhatt, Anand, and Vohra to CBI's custody till July 2.

A preliminary investigation by the CBI has uncovered that the accused persons had asked candidates willing to adopt illegal means to obtain high scores in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-Under Graduate) to opt for Jay Jalaram School as the exam centre.

Notably, last year's NEET exam at the same school had exposed a crucial vulnerability wherein answer sheets were stored overnight, prompting the accused to conceive a plan to tamper with Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets during this period, the CBI had told the court.

As per Gujarat Police, the accused persons allegedly asked the candidates not to attempt a question if they did not know the answer.

Prima facie, Mr Bhatt, a physics teacher, filled the correct answers on the papers while they were still at the school premises post-exam.

The CBI on Saturday raided seven locations in Gujarat, further intensifying their probe into the alleged NEET malpractices. Statements from six candidates who allegedly paid bribes were recorded last week, linking them to the accused.

A case was registered by Godhra Police on May 8 against Mr Bhatt, Mr Roy, and Mr Vohra for attempting to manipulate the NEET-UG process by extorting Rs 10 lakh from 27 candidates each. Authorities, who were tipped off about potential malpractice, preemptively intervened at the school, averting irregularities.

Mr Bhatt, appointed as the exam's deputy superintendent at the school centre, was apprehended before the test, and Rs 7 lakh in cash was seized from him.

The investigation showed that Mr Roy had allegedly convinced at least 27 of his students that he could help them clear the exam for Rs 10 lakh. In a subsequent raid, cheques amounting to Rs 2.30 crore were discovered in Mr Roy's office.

Mr Roy had allegedly asked his students to opt for the Godhra centre so that Mr Bhatt, Mr Sharma and others could help them.

Of the 27 students who had either paid in advance or agreed to pay money to Roy and others, only three managed to clear the exam with a passing score, while the remaining 23 failed. Investigations continue as the CBI seeks to unravel the full extent of the malpractice network.

Preparing To Hold Next India-Russia Summit, Will Share Dates Soon: Centre

The preparations for the next India-Russia summit are underway, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.

"We have a very well established arrangement of bilateral summits with the Russian Federation. Twenty-one such meetings have happened so far," external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"We are preparing to hold the next summit. We will share the dates with you as soon as we can," he said.

Mr Jaiswal's comments at a media briefing came days after a Kremlin official in Moscow said active preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia.

"I can confirm that we are preparing a visit by the prime minister of India. We cannot (say) the dates as yet, because the dates are announced by the parties in agreement," Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to the Russian president, said on Tuesday.

"But we are actively preparing. I will emphasise once again, this visit will take place," he told reporters, replying to a question.

Diplomatic sources said the Indian prime minister's day-long visit is being planned around July 8, adding there is no finality on the date yet various options are being explored.

The annual summit between the prime minister of India and the president of Russia is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The annual summits are held alternatively in India and Russia.

The last summit was held on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi. President Vladimir Putin had visited India to attend the summit.

The summit saw both sides sealing 28 MoUs and agreements besides coming out with a joint statement titled "India-Russia Partnership for Peace, Progress and Prosperity".

Mr Modi and Putin last held bilateral talks on the margins of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 16, 2022.

In the meeting, Mr Modi had famously pressed Putin to end the conflict in Ukraine saying "today's era is not of war".

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Modi has held several telephonic conversations with Putin and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In reflection of its strong friendship with Russia, India has not yet condemned Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

India's import of Russian crude oil has also gone up significantly notwithstanding the G7 price cap and increasing disquiet over the procurement in many Western countries.

In December 2022, the G7 grouping and its allies announced a cap on the price of Russian oil as part of a series of punitive measures against Moscow in view of its invasion of Ukraine. The price cap restricts countries to pay more than USD 60 a barrel.

Russia has been a longstanding and time-tested partner for India. Development of India-Russia relations has been a key pillar of India's foreign policy.

Eknath Shinde Takes A Swipe At Uddhav Thackeray Over 'Farewell' Remark

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his statement that the monsoon session beginning June 27 will be the farewell session of the MahaYuti government.

"Shouldn't he (Uddhav Thackeray) be in the House to give a farewell? Or will he say goodbye from a Facebook Live? The people will decide whether to bid a farewell," Shinde said, asserting that those sitting in the government are connected to the people and have done a slew of works for their betterment.

The obvious reference was Uddhav Thackeray's regular use of Facebook Live during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's tenure, instead of coming to the Mantralaya.

Shinde, who chaired the state Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, also criticised the opposition for its move to boycott the customary tea meeting convened by him on the eve of the monsoon session.

"This is the last session of the present state Assembly. So we thought that the opposition would come and discuss a range of issues during the tea meeting. However, they gave a letter mentioning the same issues, which the government will reply to in the House. The opposition is confused," claimed Shinde.

"The opposition may have got momentary happiness after the Lok Sabha elections, but despite all the attacks, Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister for the third time," the Chief Minister said, as he reiterated that the opposition spread a fake narrative that changes will be made in the Constitution and reservation policies.

‘'Despite spreading such fake narratives, Congress got only 99 seats and the party will need another 25 years to win 240 seats," he said.

"The Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray camp were pitted against each other in 13 seats, of which we won seven seats. Of the total 19 per cent votes, bow & arrow (Sena symbol) got 14.50 per cent. So what did the Thackeray cam get," Shinde asked.

A second case of sexually assaulting a man was registered against Janata Dal (Secular) MLC Suraj Revanna on Tuesday at Holenarasipura police station in Hassan district.

The case was registered based on a complaint by a close aide of Suraj Revanna.

Revanna's aide had earlier filed a complaint on behalf of the Member of the Legislative Council against a JDS worker, apparently to protect him.

The first case of sexual assault was registered against Revanna on Saturday night. The next day, he was arrested and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody. On Monday, the court remanded him to eight days' police custody.

"The process of registering the second FIR is on against Suraj Revanna," a senior police officer from Hassan told PTI.

Actor Vinod Prabhakar Meets Kannada Superstar Darshan In Jail

Kannada superstar Darshan, who is in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the brutal murder of one of his fans, barely spoke to him, said popular actor Vinod Prabhakar after meeting the former at the Central Prison on Monday.

Speaking to reporters outside the prison, Vinod said, "I met Darshan today. He was very quiet when I greeted him. He only spoke for one second, and addressed me as 'Tiger,' while I addressed him as 'boss'. Darshan did not talk about anything else. I shook his hand and came out."

"I met him (Darshan) under unusual circumstances. I was clueless and didn't know what to say. I was made to sit in a separate room. May Renukaswamy's (the victim) soul rest in peace. His wife is pregnant, and I pray to God to give strength to his family. This should not have happened. I had met Darshan four months ago on his birthday," he said.

"Some people are saying that I am not coming forward to support Darshan. I had also gone to meet him at the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station but I could not meet him there. See, if the problem could have been solved by social media posts, I would have made one lakh posts. But this is a serious issue. No one is above the law, and everyone should get justice," Vinod added.

Meanwhile, Darshan's wife Vijayalakshmi also came to the prison with her son but left soon after seeing the waiting reporters.

Darshan, his 'partner' Pavithra Gowda, and 15 others have been arrested on charges of murdering Renukaswamy (33), a resident of Chitradurga.

The probe revealed that Renukaswamy, a big fan of Darshan, had sent derogatory messages to Pavithra Gowda on social media. The victim was allegedly kidnapped, brought to Bengaluru, kept in a shed, and tortured to death.

Darshan is presently in judicial custody till July 4.

Haryana Government Increases Reservation For OBC

Haryana Government on Sunday took multiple decisions for the benefit of the Other Backward Classes in the state.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced these decisions.

The state government has increased the upper income limit for the creamy layer to Rs 8 lakh per year.

The reservation for backward classes has been increased from 15 percent to 27 percent in Group-A and Group-B government posts.

Creamy layer is a term used in Indian politics to refer to some members of a backward class who are highly advanced socially as well as economically and educationally.

The Government has announced that the backlog of jobs for Backward Classes A and B will be filled on priority basis, for which a special recruitment campaign will be run.

Meanwhile, on the preparations for upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, Nayab Singh Saini said, "Today, we have welcomed our Union Minister and Haryana Assembly election in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan; Haryana Assembly election co-in charge Biplab Kumar Deb and newly elected members of the parliament."

He said, "As the elections process has already set in for Haryana, because of the developmental works we had done, we will form the government in Haryana for the third consecutive term under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi Ji and with the support of our elections in charges."

He added, "We have done various works which includes providing the employment to the youths and developing Haryana in a definite manner.

Taking a jibe at Congress party and Hooda family, Saini said, "In Haryana, the father-son duo of Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Deepender Singh Hooda is busy in projecting each other. Similarly, the way Congress had projected only Rahul Gandhi as leader. This is not a political party, rather it is family."

Exuding his confidence, CM Saini asserted, "Haryana has a government of the people and the poor. The government has taken steps in the interest of the poor, farmers and women. In the coming times, BJP will form the government for the third time."

Assembly polls will be held in Haryana along with Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu and Kashmir at the end of the year.

298 Hajj Pilgrims Return To Lucknow In Flight From Saudi Arabia

The first flight from Saudi Arabia carrying 298 Hajj pilgrims returned to Lucknow today at 4:36 pm. Haj pilgrims were welcomed by the Uttar Pradesh Hajj committee's chairman Mohsin Raza at Lucknow airport.

This year around twenty thousand Hajj pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh went for the annual Islamic pilgrimage in Mecca. Upon their return, pilgrims praised the government and Hajj authorities for the better facilities provided to them in Mecca and Medina.

Mohsin Raza told news agency ANI that this year the service given to pilgrims was magnificent and thus all the pilgrims returning to their homes are praising the Yogi-led government and Modi-led Central government.

The Haj is one of the world's largest religious gatherings and the major annual event in Saudi Arabia. It is considered one of the five pillars of Islam.

The pilgrimage consists of various elaborate rites, such as wearing unique clothing that represents human equality and unity before God, a round, counter-clockwise march around the Kaaba, and the symbolic stoning of wickedness.

People who have completed the pilgrimage might add the words al-Haj or hajji (pilgrim) to their names.

Saudi Arabia has committed billions of dollars over the last decade to improve transportation, technology, and accommodations for Haj pilgrims, which are a major source of revenue for the world's largest oil producer.

Ensure Those Displaced By 'Post-Poll Violence' Return Home: Court To Bengal

The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government today to take steps to ensure that people displaced in the alleged post-poll violence in the state return to their homes.

The court also extended the deployment of central forces in the state till June 26, when the matter would be listed for hearing again.

"We cannot shut our eyes to the spate of complaints as disclosed and the allegation on the role of the police administration for which we feel that the deployment of the central forces may continue for a limited period," the court observed.

A division bench presided by Justice Harish Tandon directed the West Bengal government to take immediate action to ensure that people displaced due to the alleged post-poll violence in the state return to their homes.

The court directed the police administration to ensure the safety and security of such displaced persons and keep a constant vigil in the area of their residence and ensure that no threat perception or any kind of violence takes place in such areas.

Hearing petitions regarding allegations of post-poll violence in West Bengal after the Lok Sabha elections, the division bench directed the state to take note of those complaints and take immediate action as required, including registration of the complaints or FIRs.

The court had earlier ordered the deployment of the central forces in the state till June 21.

The state's Advocate General (AG) Kishore Dutta informed the court that from June 4, when the Lok Sabha election results were declared, till June 18, a total of 859 complaints have been received through email by the Director General of Police's (DGP) office.

He stated that out of these, 204 complaints constitute cognisable offences, and FIRs have been registered based on those.

Mr Dutta said that 175 complaints relating to non-cognisable cases have been registered.

The AG stated that 219 were duplicate complaints, 26 were incomplete and 14 were under scrutiny.

Observing that serious allegations have been made about violence in the state following the elections, the court said that the question would be whether the continuation of the deployment of central forces in such a scenario is inevitable.

AG Dutta submitted that 10 to 12 or even 20 complaints a day about cognisable cases throughout the state do not depict a picture that the state police is unable to handle the situation and said that it does not warrant central forces to remain deployed in the state.

He further submitted that the central forces cannot remain deployed after the parliamentary election is over and that maintenance of public order is primarily a state subject.

He claimed that the state government has taken all possible steps to combat any incident of violence and none of the parties have been able to make out a case of dereliction on the part of the police administration in discharging their duty.

Additional Solicitor General Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, representing the central government, stated that if the court directs, it will continue the deployment of the central forces in the state.

Lawyer-petitioner Priyanka Tibrewal gave a list of people displaced from their homes and of those whose houses were looted, in an affidavit submitted before the court.

It was alleged by Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal in their separate PILs that people belonging to a particular political party were being subjected to atrocities following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha election process.

India's Financial System Is Now In "Much Stronger Position": RBI Governor

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Thursday said that the Indian financial system is in a "much stronger position," characterised by robust capital adequacy, low levels of non-performing assets, and healthy profitability of banks and non-banking lenders.

Underscoring the imperative of fostering a future-ready ethos within the financial sector, Das also stressed the critical role of timely supervisory intervention in mitigating systemic risks.

The RBI Governor said this while delivering an address at the inaugural Global Conference on Financial Resilience organised by the College of Supervisors at the IGIDR Campus in Mumbai.

"India's domestic financial system is now in a much stronger position than it was before we entered the period of the COVID crisis. Indian financial system is now in a much stronger position, characterised by robust capital adequacy, low levels of non-performing assets, and healthy profitability of banks and non-banking lenders, that is NBFCs," he said.

He added, "I would like to compliment the banks and other financial sector entities for such a stellar performance in the year which has just ended on March 31. There is absolutely no room for complacency because the world is changing, challenges are coming, complexities are growing, and problems can originate from any corner of the financial system within the country, or the world because of something which may be completely unrelated to you and me..."

Governor Shaktikanta Das began by referencing to global banking failures, including those in the United States, and the challenges faced by institutions like Credit Suisse, emphasizing the lessons learned from such incidents.

He acknowledged the detailed analysis conducted by the US Federal Reserve on bank failures and stressed the importance of proactive regulatory measures to prevent crises.

Highlighting RBI's proactive approach, Governor Shaktikanta Das cited the intervention in the Yes Bank crisis as a testament to the central bank's ability to preemptively address financial instability.

He noted the advantages of RBI's integrated approach in leveraging various facets of banking operations to manage crises effectively.

Addressing the diverse origins of financial crises, Governor Shaktikanta Das identified internal deficiencies within organizations, external factors like climate change, technological disruptions, and undetected fraud as potential catalysts.

He emphasized the need for supervisors to enhance their methods and align them with evolving stress scenarios over time.

Governor Shaktikanta Das outlined RBI's recent supervisory initiatives, including the moderation of unsecured lending and reduction in bank exposure to Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), aimed at preempting future risks.

Das said, "Fortunately, all stakeholders in India, namely, the Reserve Bank, the Banks and Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and the government have made tangible efforts in this direction. India's domestic financial system is now in a much stronger position, characterised by robust capital adequacy, low levels of nonperforming assets, and healthy profitability of banks and NBFCs."

He stressed the importance of continuous vigilance despite current sectoral stability, urging financial institutions to embrace technological advancements while maintaining robust governance and ethical standards.

He highlighted the pivotal role of AI and machine learning in fraud prevention and operational efficiencies, underscoring the need for secure technological integrations aligned with business goals.

Das stated, "AI and ML can enhance predictive analytics and enable banks and NBFCs to identify potential risks and trends more accurately. These technologies can improve fraud detection by recognising unusual patterns and transactions in realtime. Thus, they can protect the institutions and their customers from financial crimes and frauds."

He further added, "Operational efficiency can be improved through automation of routine tasks, which reduces human error and frees up resources for more strategic activities. Robotic process automation (RPA) can handle high-volume and repetitive tasks, such as data entry and transaction processing, more quickly and accurately than humans."

Looking ahead, Governor Shaktikanta Das outlined RBI's commitment to regulatory stability, emphasizing a thematic and activity-based supervisory approach.

He highlighted RBI's efforts to establish a unified supervision department and engage senior officers to foster closer collaboration with bank boards.

Governor Shaktikanta Das expressed RBI's ambition to position itself as a model for emerging economies, advocating for a holistic, customer-centric regulatory framework as RBI approaches its centenary.

Governor Shaktikanta Das emphasized RBI's ongoing initiatives, including the creation of a unified supervision department and the adoption of unconventional methods to enhance regulatory effectiveness.

He highlighted the proactive engagement of senior officers at Executive Director levels with bank boards to reinforce RBI's oversight priorities.

Governor Shaktikanta Das reiterated RBI's vision for its centenary, aiming to position the institution as a benchmark for the Global South through a holistic, customer-centric regulatory framework.

These initiatives underscore RBI's commitment to fostering financial resilience and maintaining high standards of governance in the dynamic global financial landscape.

The girl's family was stunned when they discovered the video. When the family confronted the accused, they were allegedly met with threats and warnings, police said.

In her complaint, the girl's mother said that her daughter had uploaded her photo on social media, which was then misused by Akhtar Ali, Karan Yadav, Shani Yadav, and Rahmat Ali.

The accused allegedly took screenshots, added obscene songs, and shared the edited photos on Facebook and Instagram.

The case has been registered against the accused and the family members of Karan and Shani under the IT Act and relevant sections of IPC, Senior Sub-inspector Dinesh Kumar Sahini said and added that the accused will be arrested soon.

India, US Working For Training ISRO Astronauts At NASA Space Center

India and the US on Monday said they concluded the Strategic Framework for Human Spaceflight Cooperation to deepen interoperability in space and are working toward commencing advanced training for ISRO astronauts at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

A fact-sheet issued by the US and India after the iCET Dialogue between US National Security Adviser (NSA) Jake Sullivan and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said the two sides are also exploring opportunities to participate in the Lunar Gateway Programme.

The Lunar Gateway Programme aims to build a space station around the moon as part of the collaborative Artemis programme spearheaded by the US.

The fact-sheet said the talks between the two NSAs explored opportunities for India's participation in the Lunar Gateway Programme, as well as joint avenues for collaboration in other space technologies.

The two leaders also exchanged views on securing a carrier for the first-ever joint effort between NASA and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronauts at the International Space Station, which will mark a significant milestone in the India-US space partnership and space exploration.

They noted the strengthening defence space cooperation through the second Advanced Domains Defense Dialogue held at the Pentagon in May that featured an India-US space table-top exercise and included bilateral expert exchanges on emerging domains including artificial intelligence.

They also noted that the space agencies of the two countries are preparing for the launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, a jointly developed satellite that will map the entirety of the Earth's surface twice every 12 days as part of efforts to combat climate change and other global challenges together.

The iCET talks also saw the launch of a new partnership between the US Space Force and the Indian startups -- 114ai and 3rdiTech -- including on advancing space situational awareness, data fusion technologies, and infra-red sensor semiconductor manufacturing.

The two sides welcomed India's observation of the US Space Command's Global Sentinel Exercise at Vandenburg Space Force Base in February and its return as a participant in the exercise in 2025.

Uttarakhand Officials Bat For "Hill Endorsement" Licences Amid Accidents

A day after 15 tourists died in a road accident in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag, officials said there is a need for greater focus on the "hill endorsement" in drivers' licences accompanied by a physical test.

Joint Transport Commissioner Sanat Singh said this check was required for all tourist vehicles, including those that are a part of the Char Dham Yatra and the Hemkund Sahib Yatra, to reduce road accidents in the hilly regions.

Many tourist vehicles come to Uttarakhand, but due to the greater volume of cars of Char Dham Yatra, checking of other vehicles is ignored, Mr Singh said.

"Now we will need to focus on tourism apart from Chardham Yatra. We will now focus on hill endorsement of driving license," the official said.

'Hill endorsement' of a driver's license is necessary for driving on mountainous roads, he said.

Earlier the state did not have the facility for physical "hill endorsement" tests. So they were offered online, Mr Singh said. Now, driving tracks for such tests have been built with one in Dehradun already operational, he said.

In online tests, the driver is shown a video, and questions are asked based on it. Applicants pass the test even though their practical knowledge or skills are not checked, Mr Singh said.

Now such tracks for physical tests have been built in Haridwar and Rishikesh as well which will be operational in a month or two, the official said.

A tempo traveller carrying tourists skidded off the Badrinath national highway in Rudraprayag district and fell into the Alaknanda river on Saturday, killing 15 and injuring 11.

Earlier on June 11, a bus fell into a ditch in Gangani in Uttarkashi district, killing three female devotees and injuring several others.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the officials to strictly follow all prescribed protocols to reduce road accidents in the hills. He has asked the police and transport department officials to check the mechanical condition of vehicles, and strictly test the drivers before issuing licenses.

Mr Dhami also asked them to be careful in issuing green cards and take strict action against those driving at high speed, carrying more passengers than allowed, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to Uttarakhand government data, 1,674 accidents were reported in the state in 2022, in which 1,042 people died and 1,613 were injured. The country reported 4,61,312 road accidents with 1,68,491 deaths and 4,43,366 injuries the same year.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple In UP Introduces Virtual Reality Darshan

The devotees coming to Kashi Vishwanath Temple here in Uttar Pradesh will now get not only physical darshan, they will also get 'virtual' darshan. The temple administration has introduced 11 minutes and 50 seconds of virtual reality Darshan.

This will allow the devotees to avoid standing in a long queue in the scorching heat to get the darshan. The temple administration said that the service is now on a trial basis and will be implemented permanently after getting feedback from the devotees.

Speaking about the new initiative, Kashi Vishwanath Temple Chief Executive Officer Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said, "3D virtual reality is a new technique which has been implemented in various temples like Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar and Mata Vaishno Devi temple. The company providing 3D technology in those temples contacted Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust for the same."

"Between May 5 to June 4, a total of 363 of our employees and priests watched the movie. They gave positive feedback about the show. Thereafter, it was started for devotees and from June 4 to June 30, a total of 282 devotees watched the movie. If the devotees like it, then it will be implemented on some modalities and terms and conditions mutually beneficial and agreed upon," he added.

This initiative allows devotees to witness rare sights of Lord Shiva and participate in the five-part aarti at 'Durlabh Darshan Kendra' within just 11 minutes and 50 seconds. The initiative was inspired by Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar and Mata Vaishno Devi temples.

"It was such a good and realistic experience. I felt like I was sitting inside the temple...I got to see all the aartis," Chhavi Gupta, a devotee from Gwalior told ANI.

" It is a divine and wonderful experience...within a small time you get to know the history of Kashi Viswanath," Chandan Rupani, another devotee told ANI.

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath attracts worshippers from across the globe.

Kota Teen Sets Herself On Fire After Gang-Rape; 2 Cousins Detained: Cops

An 18-year-old died of self-immolation after she was allegedly gang-raped here, police said on Friday.

The police have detained two of the victim's cousins and are on the lookout for three other accused in the case, they said.

Superintendent of Police Kota (Rural) Karan Sharma said that they received information on Friday morning that a woman was admitted to the hospital with burn injuries.

The victim's father narrated the incident to the police and said that the accused had kidnapped her daughter from their house on Thursday night and taken her to a shop. One of the accused sat outside while the rest raped the woman.

"When her uncle got up to drink water at night, he noticed that his niece was not in the house. He went outside to look for her and heard her screaming from a shop. When he tried to open the door, the other accused sitting outside, beat him up. After the commotion, the shop's door was opened, and the woman came out crying," he said.

After the incident, the woman locked herself in her room and set herself on fire. The family managed to douse the flames and rushed her to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivam Joshi said that based on the complaint lodged by the father, a case has been registered against the accused under sections 376 (D) (gang rape), 366 (kidnapping) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

Priyanka Gandhi From Wayanad? Poll Debut May Finally Happen, Say Sources

Speculation over Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's electoral debut had reached a crescendo ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, only to be completely deflated when she decided against contesting. The buzz has started gathering steam again, however, with sources telling NDTV on Thursday that the Congress leader may be the Congress candidate for the bypoll from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency if Rahul Gandhi vacates the seat.

Mr Gandhi, who had won the Lok Sabha polls - with considerable margins - from both the Raebareli and Wayanad constituencies, also fanned the flames of a possible debut by his sister when he said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would have lost "by two-three lakh votes" if his sister had fought against him in Varanasi.

Long History

The 'will she-won't she' around Ms Gandhi contesting elections has been around since at least the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, when it had been speculated that she could challenge PM Modi in the Varanasi constituency at a time when the Congress was struggling to halt the BJP juggernaut.

After that didn't happen, Ms Gandhi herself had said she wasn't ruling out contesting the Uttar Pradesh elections in 2022, when she was the Congress General Secretary for the state. She had, in fact, hinted that she could be the chief ministerial candidate, only to say hours later that she had meant it in a tongue-in-cheek way.

Ahead of the 2024 elections, Sonia Gandhi gave up the Raebareli seat - which she had held since 2004 - and became a Rajya Sabha MP. This time, the speculation was almost seen as a certainty. It was being reported that Priyanka Gandhi would contest from Raebareli and her brother would fight to win back Amethi from the BJP's Smriti Irani.

Sources had said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had asked the Gandhi siblings to take a decision, but had let it be known that he would like both to contest. He had also said that if they didn't fight from the bastions, it would send a wrong message to the workers, the Congress' allies in the Opposition, and the NDA.

Ms Gandhi, had, however chosen not to contest. Sources close to her had said she had made the decision because if she also won the Lok Sabha polls, it would have led to three Gandhis being in Parliament - her mother, brother and her - lending credence to the BJP's dynastic politics charge.

Winning Call?

The Congress leader had spent the bulk of her time campaigning in Raebareli and Amethi, both of which were won by her party with big margins. When the Lok Sabha results came, the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance shocked the BJP and pollsters by winning 43 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 constituencies, with the Congress alone moving up to six from its 2019 tally of one. The BJP, which had clinched 62 constituencies last time, was reduced to 33, four lower than the Samajwadi Party's 37.

After the results, Rahul Gandhi had also praised his sister's role while thanking the residents of UP.

Rahul Gandhi's Dilemma

Ms Gandhi contesting in the bypolls from Wayanad will hinge on Rahul Gandhi deciding to give up the constituency - which had granted him a win when he had lost Amethi in 2019 - in favour of Raebareli. While he had said on Wednesday that he is facing a dilemma and is still undecided, saying only that his final decision will make people from both constituencies happy, sources have said it is almost certain that he will choose to go with Raebareli because of UP's importance in national politics.

Two senior Congress functionaries have also made statements to this effect.

Kishori Lal Sharma, a key Gandhi family aide, who handed a shock defeat to Union Minister Smriti Irani in Amethi, has urged Rahul Gandhi to retain the Raebareli seat while Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief K Sudhakaran has hinted that the leader could relinquish the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

"We should not be saddened as Rahul Gandhi who is supposed to lead the nation cannot be expected to remain in Wayanad. Therefore, we should not be sad. Everyone should understand that and give all their wishes and support to him," Mr Sudhakaran said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Congress workers have also held up banners in Wayanad requesting Mr Gandhi to not "leave them". The banners also requested him to ensure Priyanka Gandhi "takes care of" the people in Wayanad if he did decide to give up the constituency.

Bypolls will be held within six months of Mr Gandhi vacating a seat, setting the stage for an interesting contest.

"Congress Didn't Appoint Tribal Chief Minister Barring In...": Minister

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday alleged that the Congress has not appointed any tribal chief minister in the 21st century, barring the largely tribal-dominated northeastern states.

Mr Vaishnaw, the new Information and Broadcasting Minister, said in a post on X that the BJP had appointed four tribal leaders as chief ministers -- Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda (both Jharkhand), Vishnu Deo Sai (Chhattisgarh) and Mohan Majhi (Odisha).

Mr Majhi was elected as the Odisha chief minister at a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs in the state on Tuesday.

"Something worth thinking about...Excluding the Northeastern states, which are largely tribal-dominated, Congress has appointed NO TRIBAL CM in the 21st century," Mr Vaishnaw said on X.

"And even in Assam, BJP made Shri Sarbananda Sonowal the CM, while Congress made no tribal," he said.

Mr Vaishnaw said the BJP also nominated Droupadi Murmu for the post of President and supported P A Sangma in the 2012 presidential election.

"Congress opposed both of them. This is a glimpse of who cares about tribal empowerment and who doesn't," he said.

"Competition Not War": Mohan Bhagwat On Election, Running Parliament

The elections are over and the focus should now shift to nation-building, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said today, in a speech peppered with criticism about the way the campaign was conducted on both sides of the political divide.
Speaking at an RSS programme in Nagpur, Mr Bhagwat also had advice for the new government and the Opposition, indicating that the approach to both election and governance should be tweaked.

"Election is a process of building consensus. Parliament has two sides so that both aspects of any question can be considered... Every issue has two sides. If one side is addressed by one party, the Opposition party should address the other dimension, so that we reach to the right decision," Mr Bhagwat said in words that were seen as underscoring the importance of having an Opposition.

In this election, the Congress has bounced back, hiking its 2019 score from 52 to 99.  The mandate, while cutting down then BJP numbers to 240 -- way below the majority mark of 272 -- has given the Opposition 234 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Bhagwat said the whys and wherefores of the mandate, which comes once every five years,  does not concern the Sangh.

"The Sangh works for refining Public Opinion in every election, did it this time also but does not get entangled in the analysis of the outcome… Why people get elected? To go to parliament, evolve a consensus on various issues.  Our tradition is of evolving consensus… This is a competition not war," he said.

But he also frowned upon negativity of election time, saying, "The way things have happened, the way both the sides have attacked below the belt, the way completely ignored the impact of campaign strategies that would lead to divisions, increasing social and mental fault-lines, and unnecessarily drew the organisations like RSS in the same. Using technology, falsehood was spread, absolute falsehood."

He also underscored the need to fast-track peace in Manipur, saying the violence needs to end on a priority basis. "Manipur has been waiting for peace for a year. Violence has to be stopped and it has to be given priority," he said. "We have made strides in many fields like economy, defence strategy, sports, culture, technology etc... That does not mean that we have overcome all the challenges," he added.

Modi 3.0: 33 First-Time Ministers, 6 From Well-Known Political Families

With the third Modi government taking shape on Sunday, 33 first-timers will grace its ranks and at least six of them hail from well-known political families.

Those joining Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers for the first time include three former chief ministers -- Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Manohar Lal Khattar (Haryana) and HD Kumaraswamy (Karnataka).

Shivraj Singh Chouhan is a five-time MP from Vidisha, a constituency represented by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the past.

He is also the longest-serving chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.

A former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak, Khattar served as the chief minister of Haryana twice. He resigned from the post in March after ally JJP withdrew support from the government.

Seven first-time ministers in the Modi government belong to the allies: TDP's K Rammohan Naidu and Chandrasekhar Pemmasani; JDU's Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, RLD's Jayant Chaudhary, LJP's Chirag Paswan and HD Kumaraswamy of the JD(S).

Jayant Chaudhary, the 45-year-old national chairman of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), is the grandson of Chaudhary Charan Singh -- India's fifth Prime Minister -- and the son of former Union minister Chaudhary Ajit Singh.

Chaudhary, previously associated with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, joined the NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after the BJP posthumously honoured his grandfather with the Bharat Ratna in February this year.

Under his leadership, the RLD secured two seats in western Uttar Pradesh - Baghpat and Bijnor - with significant margins of over 4,88,000 and 37,500 votes.

Chirag Paswan, son of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, one of Bihar's most influential leaders, is set to make his debut as a minister in the central government.

He won the Hajipur seat, held by his father for a record nine times, by a margin of 1.7 lakh votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

His party, LJP (Ram Vilas), swept all five seats it contested in Bihar under the NDA umbrella, making a resounding comeback from the tumultuous period following Ram Vilas Paswan's death in 2020.

Ram Nath Thakur, from the Janata Dal (United), is the son of Karpoori Thakur, a renowned socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar who was awarded the Bharat Ratna earlier this year.

Hailing from Samastipur, the 74-year-old leader is known for his close association with Nitish Kumar and his influence among the most backward classes. He previously served as a Bihar minister between 2005 and 2010.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, the grandson of Punjab's former Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated by a Khalistani organisation in 1995, is a new entrant to the Modi ministry.

Bittu switched from the Congress to the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He contested from Ludhiana and lost to Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring by over 20,000 votes.

Bittu (48), previously represented Punjab's Anandpur Sahib in Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014 and Ludhiana from 2014 to 2024.

Raksha Khadse, the daughter-in-law of senior NCP leader Eknath Khadse, who played a key role in building the BJP in Maharashtra, was sworn in as Union minister.

She retained her Raver seat, winning it for the third time on the trot. At the age of 26, she along with Heena Gavit, became the youngest MPs after winning the 2014 general elections. Her husband Nikhil Khadse allegedly died by suicide at the age of 37.

From being one of the youngest ministers in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, Jitin Prasada will return to the Union Council of Ministers after 10 years. He quit the Congress to join the BJP in 2021.

His father Jitendra Prasada, a former vice-president of the Congress, served as political advisor to two prime ministers -- Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and P V Narasimha Rao in 1994.

A trusted friend of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Rajiv Ranjan, popularly known as Lalan Singh, represents the Munger Lok Sabha seat in Bihar.

The new faces also include Suresh Gopi, the actor-turned-politician who scripted history by becoming the first BJP MP from Kerala.

The first-timers from the BJP are Kamlesh Paswan (Uttar Pradesh), Sukanta Majumder (West Bengal), Durga Das Uikey (Madhya Pradesh), Raj Bhushan Chaudhary (Bihar), Satish Dubey (Bihar), Sanjay Seth (Jharkhand), C R Paatil (Gujarat), Bhagirath Chaudhary (Rajasthan), Harsh Malhotra (Delhi), V Somanna (Karnataka), Savitri Thakur (UP).

Kamaljeet Sehrawat (Delhi), Prataprao Jadhav (Maharashtra), George Kurian (Kerala), Kirti Vardhan Singh (UP), Tokhan Sahu (Chhattisgarh), Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma (Andhra Pradesh), Nimuben Bambhniya (Gujarat), Murlidhar Mohol (Maharashtra), Pabitra Margherita (Assam) and Bandi Sanjay Kumar (Telangana), are also among the BJP first-timers.

Delhi Court Sentences Man To 10 Years Of Jail In Child Marriage, Rape Case

Delhi's Tis Hazari Court has sentenced a 49-year-old man to 10 years of imprisonment in a child marriage and rape case.

The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 10.5 lakh to a victim who was forced into a marriage due to her circumstances and raped when she was 13-year old.

The Special POCSO court in Delhi had on April 30 this year convicted the 49-year-old accused, a resident of Bihar, under Section 376 (2) (i) and (n) of Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 and Section 9/10 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

Judge Ankit Mehta while pronouncing the quantum of sentence on June 7, 2024 in his verdict after examining all aspects of the case sentenced the accused to maximum sentences in child marriage and rape case respectively. Apart from the compensation of Rs 10.5 lakh, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the accused.

The court noted that the prosecution had established that the child was a victim of circumstances who was forced into marriage by her maternal grandmother who was the only one in her family to sustain a living. As per the victim's statement, she was the only child in the family with no parents and had left studies when she was staying at her maternal grandmother's residence where she was considered a 'liability'.

Her father had deserted the family while her mother was mentally challenged and not living with her. Since her grandmother was ailing, she had requested the Sarpanch and villagers to marry her off to the accused in case of her death. It was through a middle-woman who had informed the victim's grandmother that the accused had a wife who had passed away and was earning a handsome amount, noted the Court.

"After the death of my grandmother, it was against my will that the villagers forced me to marry the accused," she had revealed. The accused married her on February 23, 2017, in Bihar when she was over 13 years of age which was established due to a bone age test.

In her statement, the victim said that in the accused's village, she came to know about his previous two marriages. The first wife who had passed away had two teenage daughters who were living with the accused's mother while the second wife had left him.

"During the first two months after the accused got me to his village, he used to beat me mercilessly and force himself upon me which I resented," said the victim.

Sensing trouble in the village, the accused shifted her to Delhi where again he subjected the victim to torture for a sexual relationship. The merciless beating of the victim forced Delhi residents to inform police which initiated the process of registration of FIR and probe the incident.

It was the Delhi Legal Service Authority (DLSA) that appointed advocate Virender Verma to provide legal support to the victim during the trial period which was crucial for the prosecution that saw the delivery of justice.

Welcoming the pronouncement, advocate Verma affirmed that he had pleaded for maximum and rigorous imprisonment to the accused with adequate compensation for the victim. "I express my gratitude to the honourable court which considered all aspects of the case expeditiously," he said.

Reacting to the Delhi court's verdict, lawyer, activist, and founder of Child Marriage Free India (CMFI), Bhuwan Ribhu, said, "This is a landmark and welcome judgement, once again establishing that child marriage leads to child rape. I hope this acts as a precedent. By acting decisively against child marriage, we can end it by 2030. While the government aims to make India a developed country, it can only happen by ensuring access to free education until 18 years of age and eliminating child marriage."

The victim recorded in her statement that she endured rape for more than a year with nowhere to go and no one to bank upon.

She told the court that her 66-year-old 'mother-in-law' also tortured her to go for physical relationship so that she bore a child from the accused. Based on the victim's complaint, his mother was also an accused in the case but the court acquitted her.

Agency Action "Illegal", Praful Patel Gets Back Rs 180 Crore Mumbai Home

In a huge relief to Praful Patel, a Mumbai court has quashed an Enforcement Directorate order seeking to attach his properties worth over Rs 180 crore. The order was passed by an Appellate Tribunal that deals with the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act, or SAFEMA.

In the Rajya Sabha, Mr Patel represents the NCP led by Ajit Pawar - Sharad Pawar's nephew who is now a part of Maharashtra's Mahayuti coalition with the BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena.

Earlier, the ED had seized the 12th and the 15th floors of Ceejay House in south Mumbai's upscale Worli owned by Mr Patel and his family.

These apartments worth about Rs 180 crore are registered in the name of Praful Patel's wife Varsha and his company Millennium Developer.

The financial probe agency had alleged that the properties were acquired illegally from Hajra Memon - the widow and the first wife of Iqbal Mirchi, a drug mafia and gangster Dawood Ibrahim's right-hand man.

Mirchi, also an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, died in London in 2013.

Rejecting the ED's attachment order, the tribunal said that the probe agency's action against Mr Patel was illegal since the properties were not involved in money laundering and were not linked to Mirchi.

In its order, the tribunal further said that the 14,000-square-foot property of Ms Memon and her two sons in Ceejay House was separately attached. Therefore, the other 14,000-square-foot of the Patels' property did not require double attachment since it is not a part of the proceeds of the crime.

Earlier, the ED said that Praful Patel had bought the plot - on which Ceejay House was later built - from Ms Memon, adding that since she and her two sons have already been declared fugitives, the properties were attached.

The tribunal's decision has drawn sharp barbs from the Opposition in the state and renewed the "washing machine" charges against the BJP.

Sanjay Raut, who represents Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena in the Rajya Sabha, said that the developments have put the ED's credibility in question.

"It is now clear that the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, are both extensions of the BJP. The ED's credibility is in question now," Mr Raut said.

"We had no illegal properties. Yet they were attached. You have released everyone's property but not of those who oppose you (the BJP). We will continue our legal battle. You can take away even my clothes. We won't bow to you," he asserted.

Praful Patel, an Ajit Pawar loyalist, stood with him during his shock rebellion against his uncle Sharad Pawar in 2023. The coup ended with the Nationalist Congress Party, founded by the senior Pawar, being divided into two groups. Subsequently, Ajit Pawar lent support to the BJP-Shinde Sena government in the state and went on to become one of the Deputy Chief Ministers.

Row Over Relocation Of Parliament's Gandhi, Ambedkar, Shivaji Statues

The members of the 18h Lok Sabha, when they take oath, will do so at a rather different looking Parliament complex. Not only the iconic statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Babasaheb Ambedkar and Chhatrapati Shivaji will no longer be found at their designated spots, the parliament security personnel at the complex will be replaced by the Central Industrial Security Forces. While the first change has raised eyebrows, especially in the Congress, the second has raised concerns about security.

The statues will be moved to a new spot towards the back of the parliament complex, called Prerna Sthal, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has said in a statement.

Announcing a plan to landscape the Parliament grounds, the Lok Sabha Secretariat, in a statement, said: "In the Parliament Complex, statues of great leaders and freedom fighters of the country were installed at different parts of the Complex. Due to their location at different places in the Parliament Complex, visitors were not able to view these statues conveniently. For this reason, all these statues are being respectfully installed in a grand Prerana Sthal in the Parliament House Complex itself."

"This Prerana Sthal is being developed in such a way that the visitors coming to visit the Parliament complex could easily see the statues of these great leaders and take inspiration from their lives and philosophy," the statement read.

Protests By Opposition

Newly elected MP from Amethi, KL Sharma, posted the photos of the removal and the denuded spots.

"The statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar have been removed from their special places in front of the Parliament House. This is a very cheap and petty act," read a translation of his post in Hindi.

The 16-ft tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi had become iconic, with Opposition MPs choosing it as a protest spot for years.

Protesting against the move, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, said, "Statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar have just been removed from their places of prominence in front of the Parliament House. This is atrocious."

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the statues of Shivaji and Ambedkar were removed because Maharashtra did not vote for the BJP. As they did not get a clean sweep in Gujarat, they removed the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. "Just think, if they had been given 400 seats, would they have spared the Constitution?" read a rough translation of his Hindi post on X, formerly Twitter.

CPI's D Raja also condemned the move, calling it "arbitrary and unilateral". "All statues in the Parliament House are erected in the honour of individuals who significantly contributed to our national life," read his post on X.

Lok Sabha Secretariat Responds

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has pointed out that the Parliament House complex comes under the jurisdiction of the Lok Sabha Speaker and earlier also, statues were shifted inside the complex with the permission of the Speaker.

"It is clear that no statue of any great person has been removed from the Parliament House complex, rather they are being installed in an orderly and respectful manner inside the Parliament House complex," the statement read.

The Opposition has questioned the haste when a new Speaker is about to take charge.

Congress's Manickam Tagore, meanwhile said the move to replace parliament security personnel is  an "attack on parliament's autonomy" and called for the constitution of a joint security committee.

"Shah wants to control Parliament with CISF jawans. 450 parliamentary security personnel are being relieved of their duties during the elections. The first task of the new Speaker should be to constitute a joint security committee otherwise, we may see future incidents like Chandigarh airport," he added, pointing to the slapping of new MP Kangana Ranaut by a CISF constable at the Chandigarh airport earlier today.

Rahul Gandhi Conspiring To Scare Domestic, Foreign Investors: BJP

The BJP on Thursday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of conspiring to scare domestic and foreign investors, asserting that the stock market has begun rising as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is set to return to office for a third consecutive term.

Addressing a press conference after Mr Gandhi alleged a "biggest stock market scam" worth Rs 30 lakh crore and pointed fingers at Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Piyush Goyal claimed that domestic investors in fact made money while the loss was suffered by foreign investors.

The BJP leader also dismissed as baseless Mr Gandhi's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the matter, saying he keeps making useless comments.

Mr Goyal said the Rs 30 lakh crore figure highlighted by Mr Gandhi was a notional amount and did not pertain to trading.

"He (Gandhi) does not understand. That is why people of India do not trust him," Mr Goyal said, citing the big rise in stock market under the BJP government to assert that retail and domestic investors benefitted the most.

"I think Rahul Gandhi should be concerned about the fear of investors as the market crashed when the Congress was doing better than expected. Now, people are confident that the Modi government is coming back, and the market has stabilised and is reclaiming its previous highs," he said.

The trading value was around Rs 6,840 crore, Mr Goyal said and added that when the Congress was seen gaining in seats on the day of the Lok Sabha poll result on June 4, then it fell.

The minister expressed confidence that the reforms envisioned by the government will continue at a time when the country is poised for a bright future. "We are delighted that our allies are progressive and support reforms," Mr Goyal said.

They know what is good for the people of India and that the Modi government has taken the country to new heights, he added.

Rahul Gandhi said stock markets surged after "fake" exit polls and then crashed the day votes for the Lok Sabha polls were counted on June 4.

"The common people of India lost Rs 30 lakh crore in the stock market on June 4...We demand a JPC investigation into this biggest-ever stock market scam," Mr Gandhi said.

Rebutting the allegations, Mr Goyal said Mr Gandhi was desperate after the opposition alliance failed in its bid for power and Modi is set to start his third term.

He is now hatching a conspiracy to scare domestic and foreign investors from putting their money in India when the prime minister is working to make the country the third largest global economy, Mr Goyal said.

When the exit polls were broadcast, it was foreign investors who bought expensive stocks while domestic investors sold. When the market crashed, it was the other way round, he claimed to assert that domestic investors made money.

It is in the nature of markets to go up and down due to various factors and one has to take a long-term view to see how it has performed, Mr Goyal said, noting that its valuation has crossed USD 5 trillion for the first time.

The market cap has now risen to Rs 415 lakh crore from Rs 67 lakh crore when the Congress-led UPA government demitted office in 2014, he said, adding that the valuation of listed public sector firms has gone up by four times.

The share of domestic investors in the market has gone up to 84 per cent from 79 per cent in 10 years and this shows that they are the ones who have benefitted the most under the BJP-led NDA government, he said.

The size of the mutual fund industry has surged to Rs 56 lakh crore from Rs 10 lakh crore in this period, Mr Goyal added. The Modi government is coming back and investors have trust in India's growth story, he said.

Questioned about the comments of Prime Minister Modi and Shah on the stock market movement, Mr Goyal said every party makes claims about its success and the Congress also did so.

Tension In Manipur's Jiribam After 59-Year-Old Man Killed By Militants

There is ethnic tension in Manipur's Jiribam district after the body of a 59-year-old was found today, the police said. The police said they suspect he was killed by militants.

Soibam Saratkumar Singh went missing while he was returning from his farm, the police said, adding the body had wounds inflicted by a sharp object.

Angered by the killing, locals set an abandoned structure on fire, the police said.

They marched to Jiribam police station and shouted slogans there, demanding the police to return their licenced guns that were taken away ahead of the Lok Sabha election, which were to be returned after the polls.

Jiribam - which has a diverse ethnic composition comprising Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris - had so far remained unaffected by the ethnic strife which has been raging in Manipur since May last year.

The ethnic conflict between valley-dominant Meitei community and the hills-dominant Kukis has led to the deaths of over 220 people and left thousands homeless.

Arvind Kejriwal Not Given Cooler In Jail, Claims AAP. Authorities Say...

A day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal surrendered at the Tihar jail after completion of his interim bail in a money laundering case, the AAP leaders on Monday alleged that he was not provided cooler in his cell in prison and his weight was measured thrice in a "conspiracy".

The Tihar jail authorities refuted the AAP leaders' claim, saying the chief minister's weight was taken with one machine only and added that he was not provided cooler because the facility is provided after the court's order.

"The weight of Kejriwal is 63.5 kilogram, which was measured only once when he surrendered on Sunday. There was no problem with the weighing machine. His other vitals, including blood pressure and sugar, are normal," a senior Tihar jail officer told PTI.

In a press conference, senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Atishi claimed that Mr Kejriwal's weight was measured with three weighing machines during his medical examination in Tihar on Sunday.

She also claimed that at a time when temperature in Delhi is ranging from 48 degrees to 50 degrees, Mr Kejriwal was kept in a cell where not even a cooler was provided.

"Coolers are provided to even notorious criminals lodged in Tihar. While the popular Chief Minister Kejriwal has not been given the cooler. I want to ask the BJP and the LG how low will they stoop," she said.

Atishi said that Mr Kejriwal suffered from diabetes for 30 years and his weight was falling since last few months, and alleged cruelty against him.

"After he surrendered as a law abiding citizen, he has been kept in a heated cell without a cooler. I want to say to the BJP and the prime minister that not even the people of Delhi but the god also will not forgive them for causing atrocities to Kejriwal," she said.

Atishi also alleged that during his medical examination on Sunday, his weight was measured on three machines that showed different readings.

His weight was found to be 61 kg and the Tihar officials used another machine that showed his weight to be 64 kg. The Tihar officials not satisfied with it used a third machine that showed his weight to be 66.5 kg, she said.

"His weight was 70 kg when he was arrested by the ED on March 21 and it went down to 63 kg when he was weighed at home before surrendering on Monday. This shows a drop of 7 kg which is a serious matter yet the ED opposed his bail for medical tests," she said.

Atishi said Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj will take note of it because there appears to be a "very big conspiracy" behind this.

The Tihar jail officer said that on May 10 when Mr Kejriwal was released from jail his weight was 64 kg that was measured using the same machine that was used on Sunday.

The officer said Mr Kejriwal's BP was measured 120/76 and sugar level remained at 120 on Monday.

"Kejriwal is given the insulin twice a day and is under a regular watch of two doctors in the prisons," the officer said.

The chief minister talked to his wife Sunita Kejriwal through phone on Monday evening, he said. On the question of not providing cooler to the chief minister, the jail official said coolers are given to those inmates, who are unwell and the court orders the authorities to do so.

AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh also in a post on X reiterated the charge that three machines were used to weigh Kejriwal in jail.

"In the jail, Arvind Kejriwal's weight was measured thrice with different machines, one showed 61 kg, the second 64 kg, the third 66.5 kg. Whereas when he was weighed at home before leaving, it was 63 kg. What kind of joke is this? LG sahab, please get the machine fixed," he said in his post.

Singh also said that Kejriwal was kept in a small cell without any cooler even as temperature was 44 degrees Celsius.

Manipur Flood Situation Improves As Water Level Recedes In Rivers

The flood situation had largely improved on Saturday in Manipur, which was ravaged for more than five days due to the massive deluge affecting around two lakh people in 348 villages and urban localities in eight districts after the incessant rains triggered by cyclonic storm Remal, officials said.

Officials said that the water level receded in most rivers including in Imphal, Nambul, and Kongba and from the villages, human habitations and localities.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who closely monitored the situation during the past five days, on Saturday appreciated various departments and officials for making efforts to clear the water-logging.

In a post on X, he said : "I appreciate the relentless efforts of the minor irrigation department. The officials, working in collaboration with local authorities, clubs and volunteers, have been working tirelessly day and night to ensure the swift removal/pumping out of water from populated and residential areas to restore normalcy, allowing businesses to resume and daily activities to continue."

Officials said that it would take one or two days more to clear the post-flood debris and mud.

The affected people took shelter in 56 relief camps. A large number of them have returned to their homes, the officials said.

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles carried out an operation 'Jalrahat' in the affected areas and provided succour to the marooned citizens.

Since May 28, 16 columns of Assam Rifles have been deployed round the clock to evacuate those in need.

The dedicated teams used specialized equipment and employed advanced rescue techniques to reach those trapped in the flood waters.

The operation led to the rescue and evacuation of more than 6,500 people, including women and children, from grave situations due to the rising waters in Dewlahland, Thangal Bazar, North AOC and Mantripukhri, an Assam Rifles statement said.

The para-military force said that they distributed over 5,000 food packets and drinking water to those affected by the floods.

The flood waters entered important installations including medical colleges and government offices, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's private residence, and various hotels were inundated in knee to waist deep water.

Water also surged into the Raj Bhavan complex, leaving the Governor's Office and Secretariat, staff quarters, and the security personnels barracks under flood water, with only the vintage building, which is the official residence of the Governor, unaffected.

Water Resource Minister Awangbow Newmai said that since Monday in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, most parts of the state, spanning the hills and valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur, Noney, Churachandpur, Senapati, and Kakching, had been affected due to the flash floods.

Three persons have died in flood-related incidents so far while one person is missing and ten are injured.

The minister said that 56 relief camps have been opened and over 20,000 people have taken shelter there.

He also said 434 hectares of crop area was affected and landslides occurred in several hill district areas.
